Hey everyone!

In time for summer and those days when you suddenly NEED to get your hair up off your neck, but might not have a hairtoy handy, here's a style you can do without anything to secure it. Here's a cool thread describing the style. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=14032)

Ooh. Are shorties allowed to modify it to make it work, or is that cheating?

Shorties are free to modify it! I'll bet it'll work great with a paranda.

Yippee! I've been admiring this style for a while and trying to think of a way of making it work. I think several spin pins might be involved. Will post when figured.

I love this style.. gonna try it again with my paranda since my last attempt made for a very puny coil. Figuring out how to do it with just two hands will be the trick... or else I will have to recruit my human to help.

Posted these in other threads, but I'm unlikely to get new photos if I do it again this month, so here you go:

Oooh, this is one of my favorite styles! I usually do the "cheater" version, or play around with different variations because I don't have enough hands - or patience! - to do the more accurate version. :p

Here's some versions from the archives:

Four strand braid into rope braid.

Crooked rope braid.

Standard 3 strand with paranda. This thing is rock solid and so comfortable! I need to make a longer paranda, this one's getting too short for high braids.

I definitely do not have the braiding skills to keep all those twists separate, twisted, and braided, so here is my cheater's version:

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g469/blackcatpictures1/IMG_2387_zps83dcdb8c.jpg (http://s1103.photobucket.com/user/blackcatpictures1/media/IMG_2387_zps83dcdb8c.jpg.html)

It stayed without pins for about fifteen seconds, then I clipped it and wore it the rest of the day. It was pretty comfortable, I'm definitely going to play with this style more, it looked surprisingly modern with a Ficcare. :)

Awesome updos, guys! :D
I'm curious, what exactly is considered the "cheater" version of this style: a small English braid into a big English braid?

Exactly. I don't know that I have seen anyone manage it the way it shows in the instructions, at least not on their own head.

When I tried this I had a small single braid leading into a french braid. It worked with a paranda.

Ok, I did the english braid from the top and two rope braids from the sides, all braided together at nape and then coiled behind the english braid and pinned. No tail.

Gorgeous, everyone! I think this might be bumping French/Dutch pinless out of the top spot on my list of favorite buns.

Not sure about everyone else, but I consider the cheater version to be the version done with a single continuous braid. It's so much faster and easier (for me)!

Do you mean just one English/French/Dutch braid just twirled around itself like what I would call a braided cinnabun?
Or do you mean beginning a small braid, not finishing that small braid but instead adding that section (unbraided) to the rest of the hair and then doing a full English braid and weaving it under that small braided section?

Just reread what I wrote - totally confusing! So, yes, the second method you described. Also, here's Habioku's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL2jGJvMBI4) of this method for the visual learners out there. :)

Thanks a lot for the explanation and for the link! :D
I love this style so much! I wonder if I'm the only one who gets some uncomfortable pulling on hairs and tangling as I'm weaving the big braid under the small one.

I thought I was the only one who seems to always catch a few hairs no matter how careful I am.

I finally made a longer paranda, so new pics!

Fully bunned version. Wore it all day without a single pin and it didn't shift at all during an unexpectedly busy day. :D

It's so annoying and my only real gripe with this style! But I think it's part of the design: we are pushing the braid under other hair against the way cuticles lie, no wonder some hair strands will get caught and tangled.

Those are gorgeous! :D So smooth and perfectly round! How did you get it to hold without any pins? Did you tie your paranda in some specific way for better hold?

Very nice! I have to admit that to this day i can't even handle a simple french braid. I'm really a few months late on the out of bed style i guess. :P

Thanks! Nope, just a regular hairtie - it just stays for some reason, maybe because the yarn isn't slippery?

You could always do three english braids, braided together battle braid style. :)

I tried this for the first time tonight and so far, it's held for a couple hours without a single pin and with only a little poking in the ends. My hair is still too short for nearly any braided bun, so this feels like quite an accomplishment. I used the simplest version that I know of: top braid goes straight into an English braid, then bunned.

It's a little lopsided, especially on the top, but I was working blind while watching Frozen.

Wow, that looks fantastic! Did you just do an English braid braided together with two rope braids from the sides? And if you did, what did you do with the end of the English braid when you got to the end with just two rope braids hanging?

Hi! Thank you, glad you like it :) And sorry I didn't answer earlier! Yes I did and English braid (which was made from 7 rope braids) when I braided to the length I wanted I take few hair clips and clipped the exact spot. I think I had total of 4 clips to make sure the braid wont open. When secured I then made two rope braids from the remaining hair. Basically it is easy, but I like the effect it made :)

I'm kind of late to the party but I do something like this style often. I like the way having two braids kind of balances out my head so I do a french braid on each side to my ears, English braid for a bit, and then join the rest of the hair and continue the English braid to the end. I do that on both sides and then I wrap the braids under the loops that I created. It holds all day without pins. It's a really good style for flying cause it's so flat (TSA still pats it down).

Looks AWESOME!!! I believe what you do is a variation of so-called Amish Braided Bun. Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PYjubahR6g
