I spend a lot of time admiring the beautiful up do's on this site. It occurs to me, however, that most of the instructions and styles are geared towards straighter hair.

I love how beautiful and sleek they look, but would really like something that showcases my texture. I've looked and don't see a thread like this, or maybe they've been merged? Or people are just more skilled than I am at creating nice updos (not hard, really)

i know I have struggled with some buns that I technically have the length for, but that don't look as good on my hair. I'm hoping to expand my repertoire with protective styles that look nice, use my texture to my advantage and to just ogle all the lovely hair textures on the forum.

Or this thread will go the way of others I've started :D

In any case, I found this link for styles for curly hair and thought I'd share.

http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/seniors/5-job-interview-hairstyles/#!slide4

I could see #4 secured with a medium flexi on top of the bun and modified so as not to use so many pins. For example, wrapping the ends of the twists around the pony and using the flexi to fully secure them. Also, my hair is fine, so it would twist down to nothing, but I might try this style, ending it with a lwb.

Kina, I just do the same buns that everyone else does and use the same toys. I usually need a larger size hairtoy at a shorter lengthl, partly because of thickness and partly because of texture. Other wise there doesn't seem to be very much difference. I even find that what happens is that I can make buns at my 'real' length rather than my 'perceived' length. That is, when I got to APL stretched, I could make buns, even though my hair still didn't appear to be shoulder and now that I am BSL stretched, I can make BSL buns even though my hair is visually not quite APL.
I don't do anything that would take the texture out, such as blowdrying or too much brushing to 'tidy up' edges or whatever and and I don't do very aggressive detangling before making the bun, which would destroy the natural clumping that my curls do. And I don't pull anything too tight. So you can see from my buns that I have textured hair. this of course makes my buns look different from everybody else's buns on LHC, but I've decided to go with 'different' doesn't mean 'worse'. I wonder if you think some styles don't look good on you because what you see in the mirror is very different from the prototype. There is definitely a curve with getting used to this fact but it is what it is. The tigntly curly videos that show buns (they seem to show braids and twists more)I can find on line either seem to always involve using a lot of false hair, or else are based on braidouts and lots of product, neither of which I will use, but that's just how it is, doesn't really matter.
Since you are not tightly curly, but just curly, don't you see curly buns anywhere, really?

I just use the same buns we see here. I damp bun on day one. For days two and three, my hair is stretched to wavy, so its no problem to do dry.

The bun I really liked in the link I posted *did* have some twists, but primarily showed the texture, which is what I liked most about it. Most buns shown here (lhc) seem to involve twisting, which I try not to do. My hair is fine and I think twisting it encourages frizzies, the bane of my hair's existence.

I keep reading that with texture, the best way to avoid the frizzies is to restrict how much you touch it.

I *like* the texture, pulling and twisting it into buns seems to pull it out straight(er), I'd like to keep the texture. Make sense?

I don't see a lot of curly buns. There are lots of people in my area with long hair, but not many people wear it up. If they have wavy or curly hair, most seem to straighten it.

I love your hair, chen. It's *exactly* like my mom's.

Thank you, Kina, I appreciate the compliment of you saying that my hair is like your mom's. I know from what you have said about your family before that this is a compliment, because I can tell how much you love them.
I actually can't see the site that you linked to. I tried, but it doesn't come up.
My hair is not fine (quite the opposite, extremely coarse) and the twisting that is done for buns here on LHC doesn't bother it. Making lots of tiny twists or braids is way too much manipulation for, I know, because I did for 10 years and kept losing hair, but the one big twist for a bun or a couple of braids is fine for me. Since it is not fine for you, maybe you can try a bun like Cinnamon Hair's super secure bun in which she puts up her hair without twisting and uses three claw clips? It's on youtube somewhere. That's the only untwisted bun I know, but I believe there are others, though they are more rare.
I know what you mean about twisting it into buns changing the texture sometimes--it does that if you twist tightly. My hair is quite a bit more tightly curly than yours and if I twist it tightly into a bun every day, its gets less curly each time I do that and if I do that, plus brush it down, then you don't see any texture at all. I prefer for texture to be seen also. so what I do is a) I have bangs which are my natural spirally curls, shorter than the rest of my hair. Because they are short, the length doesn't pull the texture looser and because you can always see the bangs and my real texture, I don't mind so much when it gets to the point (late in the week, I wash weekly, where you can't tell that the rest of my hair has texture.)
b) I spray my hair every night with a rosewater spray that includes a spoonful of aloe vera gel, getting it damp, to keep it more curly in spite of being bunned all day, and put into two braids at night (which I have to do, I can't sleep unbraided hair without getting horrible tangles and even dreads). the fact that the hair is dampened daily (well, nightly) helps to keep the curl in.
and I also always braid VERY loosely and bun as loosely as possible, never pulling tight. I manipulate my hair as little as possible as I put it up, never brush the sides sleek and try to use hairtoys that don't flatten it.
Hope this helps.

I think the reason that my buns don't look textured or curly is because once I twist my hair to make the buns, the hair just look smooth. I guess in a way, making the buns kind of pulls out my curls/waves. Also, my curl pattern though it can get to 3b, it never stays there. If I run my fingers through my hair or lightly comb it, the curls reduce to like 2c or 3a.

I don't think it's possibly to keep your hair the same curly texture after it's been in a bun. For me, any manipulation loosens the curl, and actually being up enough to stay up will demote it to waves.
Having curly hair, I tend to avoid styles that involve sections, because my hair doesn't like being pulled apart from itself, if it can help it. I also try not to do twisted buns very often, because my hair loves to keep the shape of that twist, which creates this hard to detangle single twist dread thing. But otherwise I just do whatever.
I have a kind of terrible tutorial for a style I do (http://youtu.be/9uGkbuwgsH8) often that I like with my curly hair, but since the ends are exposed it's probably not a "protective" updo. Sometimes I wrap it around an extra time than what I show, so I just have the ends springing out all curly and cute, which I guess would be more protective because there's less out.

Hmm it sounds like we may have a similar hair texture. I'm wondering if my curl pattern is actually 3a like yours instead of 3b. Similarly to your hair, any manipulation will loosen my curls but I have had 3b like curls which never last long.

My hair's a little too short to actually do a bun now, but if I put it up in peacock twist or French twist a lot of the curl pattern will flatten out and stay flatter when I take it down. I don't think there's a way to avoid it, although a very loose bun might minimize it, if those work for you. I just spray with water, finger comb a bit, and scrunch to bring the curl back. But since I'm not really trying to protect my hair right now I usually only put it up if it's hot or if it's 3rd+ day hair and looking a little ratty.

I have always wondered about wavy hair and buns. Using finger combing, I can get those bumps of waves on day one hair that I bun loosely. My hair keeps its wave pattern, even after combing out if I scrunch it a bit, even up to day to day five hair and after being in updos all week.

I didn't investigate my hair type until I was already tailbone length, so I often wonder if with less weight I'd be more toward 3a/3b. I have a range on my head, and of course it depends on the environment. Sometimes it kind of waves, and sometimes it's definite curls. I don't worry about it too much.

I do also only fingercomb. And if you want to keep your hair curly, another thing you can dry is homemade flax gel. If I put that in when wet, my hair stays curlier even when braided or bunned (loosely). I can actually put that in, braid and then have curls that are wearable out loose afterwards, even though my curls normally stretch out and relax.

I have always wondered if any curlies managed to stay curly with bunning too! Because mine pulls out into loose waves from being bunned or braided.

I usually just wear it half up day 1 after washing and braided/bunned all the days after that. So I get a couple days of nice curly hair a week but the rest it stays up in some way (sometimes I break down and put it in a frizzy ponytail... I'm working on breaking that habit though).

I came up with my own weird one the other day - I smoothed my hadir up to a poney on top of my head then scrunched it into a loose ball thing and wrapped a leather cord plus bone needle aroynd it and sewed criss cross across it with the leather and tucked the needle in like a hair stick - its a 3 inch bone needle

Here is one quck bun--no idea what it is I focus mostly on comfort and arranging the curls as the bun details do not show up on my dark hair. i like having little curls stick out--I am not big on protective styles but see no reason why this is not protective unless I am doing something rough with my head in which case nothing will be protective.

Forgive the lateness of this reply. This is HUGELY helpful, chen. I experimented with dampening my hair (WO though) this week and it worked out quite well. My hair frizzed out of control on Thursday, but the weather is changing where I am, so I have to take that into account.

I have been trying the kinky curly line of products, just the de-tangler and the curling custard. They have been working quite well, too well in fact :D I haven't wanted to put my hair up because it looks so good! I'll get back to putting my hair up this week and keep experimenting with texture. I will try to post pics.

In the meantime, I hope people will continue to post pics of their curly buns here!

flax seed gel takes like only a few minutes to make. It's only downfall is that you must keep it in the fridge even if you put vitamin in to preserve it so don't make too much at a time. It feel icky going in, like filling your hair with egg white. but it makes your curls superb. you can do it either just after washing, like a leavein or spritz your hair and fingercomb it through dry hair (I usually braid it then overnight, but with your looser curls you may not have tangling issues).
recipes are all over the internet. and all over youtube. i like the simplest ones best and usually add only a little EO and some vitamin e

Kina, great thread, I only now just came across it.:blossom:

Like you, I look severe with my hair pulled too tightly. It is also quite fine. At the moment the only bun I can do successfully is a wrapped hair-stick bun, due to my length. So for now I do mostly twists.....peacock and french twists. One of the positive aspects to wavy/wurly/curly hair is that we can create looser versions of an up-do and it will stay put (most of the time.) Being a curly head means that my hair sticks, forks and clips will hold very well, even though I am only at shoulder length.

This is a photo of one of my twisted up-dos. Although it looks very loose, it held all day. I will often pull some side pieces out of the up-do to soften the look, especially around my face.

Well, I think most of these look better on African American hair because the texture easily holds the style. Lucky! I personally can't put off cute curly buns. Either I lose a hair stick, my hair gets knotted, or the style falls. This happens with braided curly buns too. I just have to go with a basic bun or nothin' - I also have an awful time getting a comb through my curly hair, so that could have a lot to do with why I can't do extravagant buns without it looking like a birds nest.

Seeing yours with the flexi holding it though... maybe one of my large or the x-large will hold up a doubled twist with the ends loose and sproinging out? hmmmm I'm going to try that! thanks for the inspiration! if it works and I can get my various devices to work, I'll post a picture!

My hair HATES combs. I can only detangle with soaking wet hair slathered in conditioner. the kinky curly detangler is working really well for me, which keeps the tangles down to a minimum. I'm also overdue for a cassia treatment, just not enough time, but it really helped to keep my hair from knotting up. Your hair is stunning, btw.

The only time my hair feels a comb is in the shower after the final conditioner has been rinsed out. I have lovely thick shower comb. Brushing....never, ever...wet or dry.:scared::lol:

I use my fingers to gather my hair together to create an up-do, thus the loose look.

Do you have issues with tangles? I can't imagine how I would have leather sewn in my hair and be able to get it out!

It cheap leather 1mm thread you get in the beading section sewn with a bone needle - you just snip it to get it out in pieces. It doesn't take a lot to secure a style. Most the time they don't need to be actually tied and you can just pull them out picking at them.

It's really much less damaging than using a hair tie or rubber band since it does not jank on the hair to get it out or break any - it slides out when you clip it without hair attached.

Oh - the second one was not as tangly asit looks - thats awful lighting flashing back on the pic or something - i didnt realize how gross it looked till later.

and yeah - I habe major tangle/dry/fluff/fuzz issues and securing it up makes it easier. Trying to get it up in anything tame is a pain when its moody so I just squash it up there and tack it where i want it. crazy, right?

Luluj, I'm past my measuring day but I was at 31.5 last month. My hemline is all over the place though, due to mechanical damage, so for body marker I go with where the bulk of it hits, waist when wet (shrinks up to under BSL, sigh)

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to give the impression that I thought your hair was tangly. MINE is, and hungry half the time. When it grabs hold of something, it doesn't like to let go. I've sometimes worn head gear with my costumes, got smacked dead in the face with a headband that had let go, but the hook on the end was firmly lodged in my hair, I spun, stopped on a dime in a fabulous (at least in my head) ending pose and the darn thing kept going until my face stopped it.

I was trying to imagine how to do what you did in your pics, but couldn't get past the thought of my hair eating the leather :D

Oh my yes it does like to eat things - and sometimes attacks me, too!

One of my fav play pretties is an afgani chain circlet dangly belly dancer thinngie but once I put it on dawg gone its stuck! So I end up not playing with it often - same problem with dangly jingly earrings and a lot of necklaces. Its hungry! Thats how it got named.

maybe I will get hubby to video how I do the whole hair sewing thing. There are several ways I use it. Its large loops through - not tight ones and it is a thicker lace-like thread that has a shiney coat to it so its actually slippery and I get less issues with it than a lot of traditional stuff like bands and such because here is nothing for it to grab a hold to, actually. I know the idea sounds insane, but it works out well in practice.

There are some tricks I have come up with like using a large bone bead on the tail end of the thread to make it catch and to loop around to make the tail... wind it under the bead then pull back around, slip through, crunch everything in place and start poping over it a few times this and that way then arrange curls, pull some out, spritz a bit if needed. Things like that.

(snip for length)

I have a couple of those Afghani head gear as well (http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/cb/8b/8e/cb8b8ea852563c9469dd25fdb0a78454.jpg), and no, I can't wear them. Sadly, because they are very pretty. Hell to get out of my hair. Are you interested in Middle Eastern Dance?

/tangent

So, after complaining that I couldn't do a peacock twist upthread and experimenting with the tentacular bun (:rollin:) AND some curly products AND chen bao jun's suggestions of dampening my hair down AND pineapple-ing it to sleep in (my hair needed it's own pillow! too heavy), i woke up today (3rd day hair after cassia treatment rinsed out with mega amounts of tresseme conditioner) with at least 3B hair ALL OVER. also late for work I tried to put my hair up in my usual nautilus bun and it just wasn't cooperating (too short). I decided what the hell, I'd do the tentacular bun (since it's not a court day) and just deal with it. It's up in an almost perfect peacock twist, with lovely bouncy ringlets spraying out!

I did take some pics at home, but it was really early and not a lot of light, I'm not sure how they came out as I had to leave for work. I'll try to get a co-worker to take some and post it if I can. I'm pretty excited, i loved this hairstyle and while I do like having my hair longer and I'll miss my go-to buns (nautilus and lazy-wrap, just like everyone else :P) I'm happy to have this style back!

wow, if anyone made it through those long run on and tangential sentences, thank you!

:o thank you! You're right, there is a ficcare in there, it's an orange silky, first time wearing it. It got buried though, more so as the day wore on the curls loosened (damn gravity!)

I think most of the buns/updos talked about on LHC are for people with straight hair or people whose hair is easily pulled into something nearly straight.

My hair laughs at that concept. And in order to have enough ringlets to do some of those styles, I'd have to have hair to my knees.

My biggest "what to do with my hair?" approach, is to just let it do what it already wants to do. I just secure the madness with bobby or spin pins.

Rules of thumb:
Try to tame the curls: MADNESS
Let them do whatever, then accessorize: Envy

Some random 'dos. Nothing took more than a few minutes:

Literally just a scrunchie and a flower:
http://i.imgur.com/13Hr4zj.jpg?1

Peacock twist, started high on the back of the head:
http://i.imgur.com/PR9rwUl.jpg?1

Watch curly cap compensate for bad skin with great hair: Just bobby pins.
http://i.imgur.com/0V60wMg.jpg?1

Cinnabun held with a TT stick:
http://i.imgur.com/GPVqoMe.jpg?1

Side ponytail held up with a scrunchie, and then bobby pins used to primp as wanted:
http://i.imgur.com/Xo3FdbX.jpg?2

Topsy tail the hair and cover any uglies with A Big Sparkly:
http://i.imgur.com/OF8yHgS.jpg?2

French braid (ugh) at an angle and hide the messy ends with a giant flower:
http://i.imgur.com/STs3oSE.jpg?1

Curly version of a french twist, using spin pins:
http://i.imgur.com/Fxhgz7X.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/TfLwYfF.jpg?1

However, I'm now learning that if I am willing to brush my hair out, I can with great effort, do more traditional LHC buns. But usually the work of brushing my hair out (when dry, takes hours) is just not worth it. See post #7517 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=369&page=188&p=2716540&viewfull=1#post2716540) of the wurly and curly thread for recent adventures in crown braiding.

Conclusion:

Most days, my hair is up at least some of the time, just to keep the curls out of my (or others!) faces. But I would say that my updos look very little like what I see around LHC. Same ideas are applied, but the end product tends to look very different.

CC: love your logic! My fluff has a mind of its own, too.

The irony is that when I tried to make my hair neat and strait it was always seen as horridly messy and folks said so. Now that I am letting it do what it wants I actually get compliments! Its an absolute mess most of the time now but folks love it?

Fighting against it was a losing battle with hot comb in South Georgia - hot comb plus humidity = frizzies from hell with love.

Kina: very cute bun up there!

On the dancing - I love dancing and the dancing I do is similar to Middle Eastern nd East Indian dances but it comes from the Roma traditions. I also like jewelry for Tarot reading outfits when working fairs and such. I fix the head dress problem one of two ways. First, I can wear a light sheer silk veil with the front edges hanging just over the eye level ad place the headdress on over the veil. The weight of the headdress will hold the veil in place and if you get a really nice very sheer silk you can easily see through and your hair will still be visible underneath. You could also secure the veil by dropping over a high bun and placing a tie of some type - I use ribbon - around the bun. Then you have the bun shape visible and you can then pin broaches or whatnot to the bun for extra effect. The other more complicated solution is to make a cloth circlet - I like to make a point in the front that fits between the eyes - or follow the shape of the headress - I make it from two layers with a velevet or sink on the outside and sturdy cotton on the inside. Then stick the headress securely in place. You can remove the hook chains or leave them in place to tighten the headress securely - pull out any slack so it does not slip. You can also shorten the chains as well to make it fit the clth circlet better. I have to remove over-the-top chains if I do this.

CurlyCap, you're hair is amazing! I love especially the topsy turvy and the peacock twist on you.

Rosa, you're right, it's the working WITH the texture that makes the hair look good, not fighting it. I had the same problem trying to work with my hair until I learned to manage the texture.

I can't do the buns on here and have it look all smooth and polished (major envy) and am trying to keep working with my texture and enhancing it. If I'm going to curly (which I have no beef with) I want all the curl I can get!

here is yesterday's peacock twist in the early morning, just getting ready for work and my hair looked great (pics a little dark, though):

It's a sock bun. I use a large hair elastic for a high ponytail, take the uncut sock and roll the hair around it's length to within an inch from my scalp. Then I curve it in a crescent and pin it.

I guess you could call it a "Crescent sock bun". :)

queenovnight, that's a medium orange silky ficcare. works really, really well for a peacock twist, which this was. An exploding one, but a peacock twist nonetheless :) I had to tuck in a few ends here and there since my hair is really too long for one, but I'm working on a modified version for longer hair. I really wish I knew about ficcare back when my hair was short enough to wear them easily.

I love your hair, queenovnight and have been admiring it on the board :)

this might qualify. I also posted it on the show us your buns thread with more detail about it and how it is done.

This is a sewn bun. It will last at least a few days and feels awesome because the weight is distributed by the stitching and there are no heavy or sharp sticky things in there. It also is the most non-damaging way to secure hair. Roman hair seems to have been curly hair so any roman style to me seems to be a curly-do. You can see my waves peeking out because you dont have to tighten the frick out of your hair and put all that tension on your strands.

Aso, you would use a color that matches your hair. I used a contrast so ya'll could see the stitching. Also, stitches can be made much smaller and will be virtually invisible. I made them large to show them.

I've been playing with modifications of ancient roman styles done this way. The archeologist who laid it all out - she's actually also a hairdresser - has detailed easy to understand tutorials on the techniques involved. Start with the needle stuff. From personal experience using 1mm leather cord works best if you dont have someone to help you take it down because you can easily feel the hard thicknesses of the leather and snip them.
