View Full Version : Bangs?

I'm starting to look at alternate hairstyle options since I've been sporting one-length long hair for over five years. Currently, my hair is about two inches shy of classic, and pretty much all one length, so a huge chop of some sort is definitely out of the question for me! I'm not willing to lose any of the length, but I'm still wanting to try something a little different. Hence, bangs.

Last time I had bangs was ten or so years ago and trust me, I remember what a pain they were! I could never get them to lay right and once I'd decided to grow them out, it seemed to take FOREVER for them to actually start growing. Right now, I'm looking at more wispy bangs because I don't want to sacrifice too much hair in the front whereas a blunt cut bang would take a lot away from the overall thickness of my hair.

Any recommendations on the pro-bangs front? I'm looking for all feedback, so anything is appreciated! I'm just so undecided right now!

I think long side-bangs like this (http://fabuloushairstyle.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/side-bangs.jpg?w=300&h=300) would be a good option, as they're only a few pieces/strands and not as thick as blunt bangs, and they'd be easier to grow out if you don't like them. You also don't have to worry about them laying perfectly the way blunt bangs do (I have thick blunt bangs and I love them, but I absolutely understand how much of a pain they can be).

I cut bangs two months ago after growing them all out..... 2 weeks later I was over it. I know it sounds silly.... but why not get some clip in bangs at first to see if you really want them or not.... I'm going to grow out mine into longer bangs. I can't post pictures but mine are like sienna millers bangs and I like that better than side swept bangs. Nothing annoys me more than greasy bangs that you're trying to force to one side that keep splitting and don't look natural. That's just me though.

Bangs are supposed to be a pain on wavy hair...

I'm a biased bangs-hater, who somehow got talked into them last year.... :P I last grew the things out when I was 10 (about the age I first got glasses -- hmmmm), but apparently my hubby's "you looked so cute with them!" talk wore down my resolve. Note to self: hubby always thinks I look cute.

Things I learned with my dumb bangs experiment:
1) Wavy hair gets wavier when it's cut short.
2) Bangs and glasses compete.
3) Side bangs and glasses compete more.
4) I have something closer to a three-head than a forehead. Shortish foreheads and sideswept bangs aren't terribly compatible even without glasses.
5) Even when they're long enough, they STILL won't stay behind my ears.

Darn things are roughly chin length on me now, but they keep falling out of updos, and they get the silliest kinks at the ends when I make a bun high enough to include them.

Never again!

ETA: Got another one. I can pick one: peeling itchy dry forehead or greasy slimy bangs. Because moisturizing and bangs are utterly incompatible for me.

I have wavy hair and I love my bangs. It's so nice to have the styling options; I hated the hair skinned back look.
I can wear them like this:

I'm beginning to understand that people who are so bothered by bangs have more expectation that bangs are always going to hang "just so". I have no such expectation. If I'm in the mood, I give them a quick swipe with the flat iron. Otherwise I might push them back with some gel or let them go every which way. For me - it's all good (pretty much).

That was always part of my problem with them. They were so fine and flyaway, that they never looked right to me,.I was constantly \trying fix them.

As a fellow wavy-haired, bespectacled person, I could have written this post word for word. I'm currently growing mine out and I have a bad case of the forehead mustache right now. Blowdrying or straightening them into place doesn't help. They resist any and all styling attempts. Worst hair decision ever.

Perhaps some textured side bangs with some face framing layers? I'm not sure what your perfectionist level is, but longer bangs are easier to style, and easy to put away when you don't feel like dealing with them.

I definitely feel ya on wanting a change, bangs are my preferred way to go for that. My hair is hip length, layered to my tastes, and my natural color (soft black). There's... really not much else I can do when I'm feeling restless.

Mine are not really side bangs, but I often style them that way. They are half an inch shy of the tip of my nose, so they are just long enough to brush to the side if I'm in a hurry. I put some putty in them on washday, and that helps on other days. If I want them on my forehead and I have time, I will quickly style with a blowdryer, either straightened or dried with the diffusor for a curly look. My really-have-a-lot-of-time styling method is to twist small sections and heat with the diffusor to set them. Then I fingerstyle. It gives me a sort of 80s windswept look. On the mornings when I have to be at work at 7:30, I have to cover my hair anyway, so I grab a scarf and cover all my hair. It's easy and I don't have to deal with the bangs. So, yeah, they can be extra work, but they don't have to be, even if you're a wavy. Got2B makes a good putty or wax or whatever; it's the one in the blue tub. It's not greasy at all and holds well without being sticky.

I'm also a wavy with bangs. I had them all growing up, then went without for a long time as DH requested I grow them out, but I cut them back in again shortly before I started my hair growing journey. I heat style them, it only takes a minute and I don't care about the damage as I'm not trying to grow that part out! I don't have that many different styling options pictured below, but the center pic was when I did a little pompadour with them, a la Elvis. I've had them blunt straight across, but prefer sideswept nowadays.

HumanBean; that's so cute. I love having variation like that.

What did you decide, endlessly?
