View Full Version : These are the shortest layers I've EVER had......... (pics)

And I love them !

My shortest layers on top are only 4.5 inches long. I'm a bit unsure of how I'll be styling it, everything I was doing before isn't possible now. No bun for me !

Here's two crummy cell phone photos, I don't know why I didn't take any from the front. I'm going to give myself some highlights tomorrow and then I'll take a front facing shot.

Anyone else have layers this short ? Do you like them ?

I'm not a big fan of layers to begin with but i have to say that you pull them off really well, they blend nicely with your hairtype and texture, very lionesque in a good way. :)

Pretty! :) They look great with your hair texture. Mine, however, not so much.. Which is why I am growing my layers out. :/ I felt very limited as to how I could style my hair when my layers were short; I even had difficulties making a simple ponytail look decent. Also, maybe Google hairstyles for layered hair? I'm sure you could find some hairstyles that are still do-able even with your layers!

Ah, UltraBella, no matter what you do with your hair it always looks gorgeous!

I have had layers that short: :disgust: Not a good look for me.

I'm growing mine out. I found out real fast that layers in my hair make me look...homeless. They looked like someone cut them with a rusty butter knife lol You pull them off very nicely though!

I think because my hair is very thick and I have a ton of bulk at the top of my head & crown, layers really work for me. My hair is pretty weighed down otherwise. I've never had my hair feel this light and fluffy before, I'm really liking it :)

Your hair looks amazing. Your thickness and waves are enviable. I have layers this short but since my hair is baby fine they do not lay near as nicely as yours do.
I use a very large round brush to dry mine to give volume, then place some large velcro rollers on them and let them sit for 15 minutes. I think they way you have the hair styled now is perfect actually so no advice I give will be better :) May I ask how you styled it to get that look?

On day you want to wear the hair up you can always twist or dutch braid the bangs and sides back.

HA That is exactly what mine sound like.
I love layers, just do not like dealing with them on fine hair. One one hand my hair looks boring all one length, on the other the layers take away any illusion of thickness. It is such a constant battle for me.

Looks great, UB! My hair's not as thick as yours, but I need lots of layers at shorter lengths too to prevent triangle-head. Scrunching with gel and drying with a diffuser was my usual method until past shoulder -- it started getting too time-consuming after that.

Layers are a godsend for thick, wavy hair!

Yes I had them that short, didnt work on me without teasing or blow drying from the roots to lift them up.... im a low maintenance so that got old pretty quick.

Your layers are beautiful! I once had a haircut like that but it was too challenging for me - I was too unexpirienced (didn't know how to style it other than wash with shampoo and put it in a pony) and my hair was (and still is) too fine. So it wasn't a pleasant experience for me, but you totally rock the layers!

Whoa, thickness and body and volume abound with those short layers!

I had layers a bit like that (not nearly as professional and well done) when I was growing out a pixie, and I styled my hair by doing a cinnabun right on top of my head while I slept. But I was a lazy teenager with almost no heat tools of any kind. If I remember correctly, you're the reigning Caruso Steam Set Queen, and I bet you could find a way to do a set that would look out of this world with your new do! :D

Looking forward to more pics! :flower:

I did at one time. Hated them. Never again. I didn't realize how limited my style options would be. I never want a style where my shortest layer can't stay in a ponytail especially with summer coming.

I think it looks fantastic. My hair is also thick (although not as thick or long as yours) and my layers start around my cheekbone. I've always loved how much body and volume they give me, makes my waves bounce up and overall improves the shape of my hair when I have it down. The one thing I struggle with is styling, so I also would like to know how you style your hair....especially the short layers that frame the face. Mine always seem wonky and tend to fall into my face and I don't know what to do with them. So yes overall I like them and I think I will continue to have them as my hair grows longer, but it's not without its challenges. Here is a pic of my hair...you can see it's heavily layered...can't wait to see your highlights and how you style it!! :D

I might have to try that....do you just put the rollers on the layers at the crown, or all over? What do you do with the layers surrounding your face?

I have had in the past. I couldn't do much with my hair, only wore it down.

I think the short layers would be a benefit for you because of your face shape (heart?) You could pull up the length in an off-center messy bun, keeping a loose and relaxed feel, and have some nice wispy layers at the front.

On day you want to wear the hair up you can always twist or dutch braid the bangs and sides back.

I have no idea what it's called, but I have this round brush tool that you plug in and it's like a blow drier & brush all in one. Warm air comes out of it while you're styling. I just used it to bend the front pieces away from my face and tame any weird areas. I like it because it doesn't get a hot as a normal blow drier.

I did this last year too, lol. In fact, last February is when I got my a-line bob with the super short back. I almost did it again but my hair grows fast and it's hard to keep that shape.

Your hair is lovely ! In my first answer above a mentioned round brushing away from my face, I also curl my hair hair away from my face with my Caruso set. It falls nicely and stays out of my way.

It's just a heavily layered, blended cut. Some would consider it a modified shag, without the heavy bangs.

My hair is drying from washing after doing some highlights, I took several photos earlier. (I'm so sorry they're huge, I resized them several times. Ugh.)

My hair when I woke up today - just a ponytail on my head because I can't do anything else, lol.

http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/ac282/beyondbeauty76/6974fa688c7cc3080b8f92da953ddfac_zps984aba02.jpg (http://s908.photobucket.com/user/beyondbeauty76/media/6974fa688c7cc3080b8f92da953ddfac_zps984aba02.jpg.h tml)

I took it out of my ponytail and played with it a bit, I can easily pull the front back and from there I can clip the rest back, so I'll still be able to wear it up and out of my way when needed. Yay !! It only took one bobby pin on each side to keep the short top bits in place.

I do have very bulky, thick hair, especially on the crown of my head. It's hereditary, thanks Mom !

I ended up not styling my hair with my Caruso because it took so long to dry, but I will do it tomorrow morning for sure.

I might have to try that....do you just put the rollers on the layers at the crown, or all over? What do you do with the layers surrounding your face?

I place them in rows on the top. one for bangs, one right in the middle, one towards the back. All rolled backward. Then another one below that one in the back
On the sides I place I section hair in half horizontally and roll each piece under. 8 rollers in all. Sometimes I only use one on the sides if I run out of romms which bring me to 6 rollers. The effect is the same really so no clue why i try to force 8 :) Mine are the jumbo size. http://www.amazon.com/Conair-Mega-Holding-Rollers-Count/dp/B00152TXDM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398669192&sr=8-1&keywords=jumbo+velcro+rollers
They give a lot root of volume without curl. For curls you will want smaller ones.

I really need to look into those steam rollers though :)

Ultra Bella, those pictures are amazing. I think you will have a lot of versatility with this cut. Every option is flattering! These layers really do frame your features well. That style is actually what I have been trying to achieve my whole life. It is my personal favorite. I always have hard time finding a stylist to get the layers right, but I know when done right it is a fantastic enjoyable hair style.
I am so glad you got such a great cut!

Wowza.

Every time i see new photos and styles of your hair i'm amazed. Your hair's truly shampoo-ad material. Pulling off this heavily layered style isn't everybody's cup of tea, on most of us it would look like a mullet cut :D I never thought i'd say this for such a harsh, coiffed style but it looks fantastic on you! I'm starting to believe there is no hairstyle in this world your hair cannot pull off :)

I hope mine will look somewhat like it when grown out...at least I can hope ;) If you can stand to show us how it looks after you Caruso your hair, I'd love to see a pic of that too. Thanks for describing this to me ErinLeigh. My hair is very wavy so not sure how it would but I'm going to give it a try and see! One thing I never seem to have enough root volume, so maybe this will help.
