View Full Version : Good salon experience

I thought it would be good to post a positive salon experience for a change. I just got back from a trim (first in five months) and am very happy with the whole experience.

I took along my own shampoo/conditioner and they were quite happy to use it - no weird vibes at all. After the wash I then took out my own wooden comb and began detangling myself - they were once again fine with this - maybe even a bit relieved that I took it on! I told the stylist how much to cut (i.e. very little) and she then showed me with her fingers what she thought I meant - of course it was too much and I told her to cut less than that. Then she cut a small piece and showed me to make sure I was okay with the amount she was cutting.

My hair went from 75 cm(just above waist) to 73 cm so a cut of about one inch. It feels so much healthier - I am so happy and relieved. The stylist was very complimentary about my hair condition and said that whatever it is I am doing to take care of it is working - so thanks LHC for the advice/tips.

Here is a picture after the cut:

Thank you for the lovely comments. :)

Everyone in the salon thought my hair was so long even though it's not even waist length yet! I kept on thinking -- what they would say if they saw some of the amazing heads of hair on this forum?!

Zirena - that's the first compliment I have had about my hair colour - thank you! :flowers: There are some old highlights on the bottom 15cm of my hair - other than that it is virgin hair.

As someone who has seen the amazing heads of hair on LHC, I still agree with them that thick, blunt hair does look very long, even when it's at the "shorter" length of MBL/nearly waist.

Glad you had such a good experience!

Perhaps having hair in such good condition helped you get the trim you wanted. I have found that hairdressers often want to cut more because they are not used to people growing out damage, and think they are doing you a favour by cutting more to make your hair tidier.

Gorgeous! I admire your hair color. I thought you had dyed ombré hair at first, myself!

That is great that you had a pleasant salon experience, seeing as you mostly just hear salon "horror stories". (Hair stylists taking a 'trim' as meaning a big chop, eek..) I would definitely keep going back to that one. :applause

Gorgeous hair! How lovely.

I love the guy who cuts my hair, too- even though I only see him once every 9-12 months he is cool, and he helped me grow out my pixie gracefully, which is lucky because my wedding was bang in the middle of the awkward phase! Yay for good hairdressers!

Glad you had a great experience.

Whoa, that's awesome. It's a little shocking to hear it went so well, because I could never imagine any of my local salons being that chill with any of that. I'm glad you had a good experience. You have some amazing hair!

Great to hear of such an awesome salon experience! And oh my god, I love your hair color and silkiness, and those great blunt ends. You did everything so right at the salon, double-checking the amount to be cut, bringing your own comb and products!

that's the first compliment I have had about my hair colour - thank you!
Wow, your hair color is so gorgeous, I can't believe you aren't getting compliments on this color all the time.

If you want a consistent good experience call around and ask if they have a master beautician. They are MUCH more trained and usually the manager of the salon. Ask him or her on the phone if she likes to work with long hair heads. When you go to meet her, suggest using your pictures over time on their salon website to show long hair care. Discuss before hand using your own combs and products, detangling and what your hair care goals are. The last one I had we worked together to help make her place a long-hair care spot and she was open to hearing my experience, tips and so on and even putting them into practice. It helps if she knows you are educated about hair and hair care, too. Everyone loves someone who is into their same passion - it can be a great relationship and budding friendship. Oh, and get her salon Facebook and personal Facebook - you can learn a lot about who someone is from their social media accounts.

eddit- if you don't like the response n the phone - move onto the next. Finding a good master beautician is as important as finfing a good Dr. They should be willing to be interviewed. If they are not - they are not worth the time. Also, ask if they compete in hairshows. Seeing their artwork is a nice experience and they love the interest in their art if they are a real hair passion person.

Excellent advice, Rosa Harris! Definitely, the more prepared you arrive at the salon (information, photos, hair tools, products), the better your experience will be.
