View Full Version : Low lying bun for under sun hat?

Hi all

I just realized my hair won't fit under my wonderful new sunhat! Can any recommend any buns or modifications for buns/styles to wear under a sun hat? Will I have to do braids? Seems like it'll have to sit below the hat, which is pretty much on my neck.

Thanks!

Hopefully someone else will chime in, because I wore a sunhat all last summer and I had to wear braids because even the smallest buns interfered. Maybe a pinned braided bun that is flat(ish) on your low nape? I didn't have enough length for that last year, so maybe that would work.

Maybe a braided oval bun? With your length and thickness it might be hard to find a bun that sits so low yet holds securely. I have the same problem, and I usually just go for a side braid or twin braids. At least that way you can pull the hair in front of your shoulder(s) and get it off your neck!

Yes I am thinking maybe I'll have to use the hat and some pins to actually hold the hair up, as most of my hair accessories won't fit under and neither will a normal bun. Sure braids will be fine if I have to use them, would be nice to have another option though :)

how about a beebutt bun?

(I really miss the articles section with tutorials...)

Oooh, a 'dangling' bun, I think that would work perfectly! Great idea, Kina! (now I need to buy scrunchies lol!)

I tend to go for infinity buns at the nape, since they spread my hair's bulk out more horizontally than a round bun does.

Or else I braid. I end up braiding a lot!

Doesn't wearing your hair in braids defeat the purpose of the sunhat if you're wearing it to protect your hair from the sun? I mean, the ends are really what would need protection, not the roots, and with braids the ends are exposed to the sun while the roots are protected.

I care more about protecting my face/ears/neck from the sun than the hair...

Low infinity is my bun for hats, unless I'm wearing this (http://http://www.ebay.com/itm/woman-lady-adult-Summer-beach-Sun-folding-adjustable-Wide-Brim-straw-Hat-Cap-new-/220979642833)

Twin english braids also work well for me.

We just came back from the beach. I did a low lazy wrap bun secured with an acrylic stick. My hat fit fine. I use my hat to protect my scalp more so than my hair. Sunburned/peeling scalp is no fun.

I don't know about you all, but I'm trying to protect my face and scalp from the sun. Hair doesn't get tumors.

I like to wear a side looped bun with hats:

Thanks to the elastic I can slide the bun down a bit so the hat can fit. The bun can be very long and lose like a loop ponytail, or a smaller loop of course. :)

(I don't really attempt to protect my hair from the sun or chlorine and all that though...)

Chinese braided?

Exactly what I was thinking. Using a shorter fork or shorter stick than normal would probably work well.

I do a cheater nautilus with a ficcare at the nape of my neck. I will have to try an infinity. Thanks for the ideas :)

I use buns like the lazy wrap, nautilus, celtic knot and orchid. Buns that tend to be wider than they are tall, I guess, and I place them low. My sun hat is for protecting my skin, I'm not very worried about my hair in the sun, I like the natural ombre effect.

I have a big head and long face, so maybe it's slightly easier for me (though finding hats big enough for my noggin is not). But if I do a disc bun as low as possible, I can wear these hats to shade my face.

Dickie's Trucker hat:

Sun hat I picked up from Walmart a few years ago:

I was just about to suggest a disc bun! It's become my go-to style for lazy days, because I can wear it loose (so that it sits low) and barely feel it's there at all. I bet it would work perfectly under a sun hat. : )
