View Full Version : ugly hair? or is it just different?

Well, long time ago I accepted my weird not curly - not strait - thin and fine yet wirey/hard hair as just being 'me'. I tend to call it my cavegirl hair but I've been on the board and seeing all the awesome manes folks have and honestly it is depressing. Mine never lays strait or neat - I cant even get it neat for a picture. I know I should not compare myself to standards... everyone is individual. This is just Roma (gypsy) hair being Roma hair.
anyway this it it being itself

the last picture is it being the most naturally as it is - air dried and no extra oi - it loops into lazy sections that are somewhat lock-like. My son's and Mom's actually makes ringlets but mine is not that curlyl. The second picture is after oil bunning treatment.

It's not too horrible but my mom keeps saying I should cut it which is depressing since I want to see how long it will get.

Your hair reminds me a lot of when people put products in it to give it texture, just without the product. This means that people go out and buy things to try and make their hair do exactly what your hair does naturally. If you want to grow your hair out, grow it out and feel gorgeous.

Your hair is so pretty!! It reminds of the type of flowing hair a fairy would have, and that is a huge compliment! Long, fine hair has a sort of ethereal look to it.

Thanx folks!

It took me years to learn that I could not really do hair products for the most part. They just make my hair a disaster.

What is the 'curly girl method'? I do put it up in a twist bun like an African knot and then get this result which is more full and wavy -

I like your hair. My hair hasn't got wave to it. I went a long time wishing it did. It took a while to accept the hair type I've got. I think a lot of people tend to feel the same way across all hair types. You have the hair type that I always imagined as a more sentual type if that makes any sense. Dark and lovely.

If you want long hair I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it.

Curlygirl is really about learning to get moisture into your hair. Curlies tend to be dry so the idea is healthy, moisturized hair with the right balance of protein will give frizz free (reduced) shiny more developed curls. There are styling methods tthat go with this as well. Just in In a nutshell. It could be cowashing like you have done before, or even using shampoo but sealing in the moisture using methods such a LOC (Leave in, oil. creme) or whatever. Tons of sites about it that can explain it properly but it really is helpful for some. I could see you getting serious waves using this method. I saw are trying WO though and I see both sides, some saying they lost waves and some saying gained so it will be interesting to see which way your hair goes if you keep with that.

I think you are being way to hard on your hair. Didn't you grow out from shaved head with no trims? I don't think your hair is ugly or even just different. To me is is just normal nice hair. Well, actually more than normal..your hair has an inspiring history and you should be very proud of it. It looks great. You have natural growth layers. I think as those catch up you are going to find hair is a lot thicker than you realize. It looks really full now actually especially after the henna! I hope you are liking it. I think sometimes we are just our own worst critic. It is easy to see all the gorgeous hair on here and compare yourself but you have to figure someone may be thinking the same things and comparing to your own hair :)

I agree with previous posters - it looks like the kind of hair people spend a fortune on "salt spray" and "matt effect" stuff to make it look beachy and lived-in. I think it's nice

I think we are a bit of hair twins, actually! My hair does this too, it's very wavy yet also pin straight at the same time.. very fine and very coarse and it just clumps together but it's also frizzy... it's like my hair is in a constant identity crisis! I feel you, I always feel a bit embarrassed about it :( Not to say that you should, definitely not, but I do feel where you're coming from! It can be frustrating sometimes to not have superglossy shiny frizz free hair, but I'm trying to embrace it as well and have some rock & roll hair :P

I think it looks just fine, but I do want to note one thing. I see a bit of hair loss at the top of the head right where in the avatar picture you have your bun. From experience, don't pull things too tight or it will result in hair loss over the long run and that would be a total shame. You have a gorgeous head of nice and wild hair :)

The bald spot is caused by problems with my skin and I put the bun there a lot to hide it. It has always happened in the same place. I never pull my hair tight to try to prevent damage and loss.

oktobergoud : It might be another fullness up from that but it actually flufs out quite well. The actual strands are about cat hair thin and you can barely feel them between the fingers other than the grays which are a bit thicker.

Ahhh I didn't know that. Good thinking of putting the bun there then :) I was just worried it might be the pulling that caused it, good to read it's not :)

Annoying skin problem alright!!

Oh goodness, how have I not seen that we are hair twins? You have perfectly described my hair (but with long stringy thin tentacles from BSL down since my damaged hair thins at the end). I used to be a bit sheepish about how it looks when it's down, but I love the versatility and I've come to love it for what it is.

I say we should let our cavewoman/witchy/squirrely/wild n' crazy rock n' roll hair be itself! I've spent most of my life trying to make it less or more like one aspect that it has, and now I just let it do what it wants.

Who cares if we don't have tight, uniform waves? Or sleek, straight locks? Who cares if there's a cloud of wavy/curly frizz around my head all of the time? It just means there are parts of me that are free from constraint lol!

Looks to me like you're not a 1, plain and simple. And your mom is not sounding all that supportive of caring for your hair. Sad, but lots of moms aren't supportive.

Absolutely grow your hair if what you like is long hair. I find my hair utterly unlivable until it's past waist length on me. It's really fine and floaty and easily damaged and generally in the way unless it's in an updo. Other women would die if they couldn't have a pixie cut. Both are good, just so long as your hair is suitable for your taste. Obviously, tastes vary. But it's your head, so what is on it should suit *your* taste and no one else's.

I agree, you are not a 1-anything. I'd say at least 2A if not 2B. I think a little trim of the ends - no more than 1/2 inch - would enhance the shape and appearance of your hair.

Rosa Harris
April 21st, 2014, 11:38 AM
So what category ya'll think my hair would fit into?

Pretty clear to me now that '1c' was curl denial for me.

Oh, and my Mom,, she can be awful. Downside of having a hairdresser as a Mom is that even more than most Mom;s she think 'mom knows best' at this. She also always seems to be dying to do something to it - anything - just itching to get her hands on it. I used to think she wanted to make me look ugly as she has created my worst hair disasters (all the time thinking it was a great success) like my perm poodle head when I was 14. I don't let her stress me too much but the negative messages suck.

Problem with hairdressers is they love to process and process and process... its like trained into them to chemically destroy and cut hair. To slather other damaging things on it - and to tease it - in her case and glue it in place with hairspray and gell. Gross.

ETA:

Thanx. I'm going to change that in my profile :)

about the trim.. what shape would you do? it has a v shape naturally and that is what it always grows into. My mom used to go for a U shape with it. I don't like the strait line and that would also take a lot of the length.

probably I wont tho since part of my goal is to grow natural with no trims. Plus I have never been able to find a reliable hairdresser here who did not take off 4 - 6 inches at one go. Mom is an absolute NO! In fact I am the long hair hair cutter around here. LOL

I think your hair looks darn cool! Its like the hair of heroines in action movies :). Artfully tousled, like "I'm the hero, my hair don't give a damn, I wake up in this state of awesomeness every morning".
As a person who is often overcritical about her own thickness, sometimes its better to ignore ourselves :lala:: it looks way better from the outside than we think. Fairytailing looks pretty awesome with your texture and kind of hair, and its pretty common even for Hollywood stars.

I don't think your hair is ugly, at all. It's so beautiful and wavy, it reminds me of my auntie's hair which I think is one of the most beautiful in my family (and also hair inspiration for me). It looks thick too. If you want to grow it go for it, it will look even lovelier (like a faerie, magical)! Mums are really quite hard on us sometimes and I can't even imagine a hairdresser mum at that. Just don't get discouraged, think about your long, wavy gorgeous hair. :)

Looks to me like they are classifying everything into 1, 2 or 3 and then using a/b/c where LHC say F/M/C. Which is fine, but not what it means on here, I guess.

ETA, OP, it's your hair, I'm sorry that other people in your life feel they have to offer you an opinion. It looks like it's doing a typical type 2 thing to me. Nothing wrong with that. There are things you could do to make it 'tidier' like trimming the ends a bit, or damp bunning, but my main suggestion would be to wear it in a way that makes _you_ smile :)

I know it can be irritating to have your mother tell you what to do with your hair! Your hair looks lovely. The texture looks similar to mine. It's most definitely not ugly, and it has a nice length to it!

I have used a red box dye on my hair maybe 3 times over the years. About a year ago, I decided to ditch the dye and let my natural color grow out. I have naturally blonde/dirty blonde hair, so the line where my natural hair meets my weirdly faded dirty blondish-red hair is of course noticeable. My mother tells me to go get it colored at the salon. She says that everyone needs to get their hair done. She goes to the salon every few weeks for color/cut/style. That works for her because she gets it cut every time she goes and it remains pretty healthy. I could never do that with my length, nor do i want to! I'm happy letting my natural color grow out. I just wish she would accept that I AM growing my natural color out and I'm okay with that. (Sorry, had to vent. Lol.)

Aw, your hair is not ugly! Take care of it the best you can and enjoy it! Try your best to celebrate what you have, while making changes in the direction you want to go in, if you can (for example, longer vs. shorter). Some things none of us can change, and I hope we can each feel beautiful. I think life is too short to feel ugly. What would be the point?

Also, Roma hair is just lovely, I'm quite jealous :D I see girls around here and their hair texture is just lovely, and most of them have really long hair. And while my hair is very dark, it just doesn't have that kind of texture.

I echo some of the comments that your hair naturally does what some people spend tons of money, hours, and laments to achieve. You can be spared the hair torment that goes with all of that and still have the look many people want :-)

For a long time, my hair wasn't doing its curly-ish thing. And sometimes, it still doesn't (especially when I visit Boston and DC for some reason). So, I can understand your reactions to the not quite straight but not quite curly thing. Most of my relatives have either 3c or curlier hair or 1a hair... the curlies never considered me a curly and the straight hairs never really accepted my hair into their group... it was hard to hear their comments, even if I knew they were not trying to be hurtful, just calling it as they saw it-in *their* opinion. Eventually, my hair's natural texture either evolved or really began to show its true self.

But it took me embracing it for itself first. Acceptance and even compliments from others followed only after that. Now some of those same people ask me how I care for my hair and tell me my curls are beautiful or that they want to find a way to get theirs like mine. I hope you have a similar experience along your journey... You've already got naturally what many strive for!
