Hi guys :)
I've been practising braiding on my dolls head and I'm looking for a clear tutorial for a dutch fishtail braid? I can manage a messy french fishtail but I can't figure how to do a dutch one?

I just thought someone might be wondering what the heck I'm on about  So here are some links to the only dutch fishtails I've been able to find:

http://www.girlydohairstyles.com/2013/08/dutch-fish-bone-braid.html
Both these have videos but I just can't quiet see what I should be doing...

Oh, going in a reverse direction, then? I imagine that instead of wrapping from the back, around the outside, and in, you would wrap from the back, around the inside, all the way around? I will have to see if I can try it tomorrow on something. Looks awesome, I'd definitely like to learn.

I'm not sure, just that normal fishtail sits flat and the dutch version (like the links above) pops out, does that make sense? Same as the difference between a french and a dutch braid.

Augh, should have finished watching ALL the video before replying. Sorry to double-post, I don't think I can edit my posts yet? Anyway, I noticed that she for sure puts the picked-up hair into the opposite side of the braid. So, hair picked up from the left goes to the right half, and vise-versa. I don't know if that has been a problem for you. And yeah, everything seems to be just taken from the top (rather than the back, I full-sized the video on a second play-through to pay attention in closer detail) and around the back. The girl's hair seems to maintain pretty sectioned pieces as the braid goes on. If that makes sense. Maybe the mom is just really good at grabbing the exact same amount she needs every time, ha. I don't think the picked up pieces get braided in immediately either, but I could be wrong.

I don't know, I have no trouble with a standard fishtail braid just getting it to sit up :)

:joy: I'm so happy to see a thread on this style! I've tried it a couple times but haven't quite got the hang of it - it would be so much easier if I could see what I was doing. The way I did it is closest the second video, but I did the smaller strand first then picked up the accompanying section.....

Maybe I should try it the opposite way, and see if it looks less messy.

Wow I think your's looks very nice! It seems like a less common braid for whatever reason....I've been goggeling a lot and I can't find much at all :( Maybe I should send a request to Torrin but I seem to remember fishtail braids and her hair don't love each other LOL I've also found a few more links:

It's not common because fishtail braids are technically easy but very time-consuming. My hair takes twenty minutes on a good day to wrestle into a NORMAL fishtail braid, let alone a French or Dutch one.

Well I managed it on my mannequin, it doesn't look great or anything but it's a start and I imagine it'll look better with practice. I found the above youtube video to be an easy way of doing it but I like the way this one is done so I'll try it later too: http://www.princesshairstyles.com/2012/11/inside-out-fishtail-braid-tutorial.html but I can do it the other way so I won't fret if I can't get the other technique. It is pretty but as Sharysa it takes ages to do even a standard fishtail plait on yourself!

So this thread reminded me to practice my fishtail endurance. They're less time-consuming than I recall, although it may be because I zoned out for about half of it. :p And my arms hurt like crazy until I went to sleep.

Looks absolutely awesome! Did it slip down at all?
