I'm not sure what to do with my hair while sleeping. I've heard to use a silk or satin pillow case, but then I hear people say they wear a silk night cap.

Both are better than nothing. I think a sleep cap is more protective, but it also has a tendency to come off in the middle of the night. I use both.

It's a personal preference thing. I tried a satin pillowcase, but my head kept slipping off my pillow. I tie a silk scarf around my head now, and that works much better for me. My hair is contained in the scarf, but the folds provide enough friction for me to stay on my pillow.

Also I don't really understand tying your hair while asleep. Isn't that bad? Sorry I'm just confused.

I use a satin pillowcase and a silk sleep cap. I used to use a satin sleep cap I like the silk one so much more. The satin sleep cap was hot in the summer and wasn't adjustable. I am saving for a silk pillowcase. This is the silk one. http://https://www.etsy.com/transaction/175064926?ref=fb2_tnx_title

I've begun braiding mine before bed, it keeps it out of tangly situations... Also is easier to comb out of a morning... Unless it comes out of it's braid... (Which it hadn't done yet.... :p) That's a preference thing as well I think... when my hair got to shoulder length, I tailed it every night... So, I have no experience wearing my hair down to bed... seems to tangle less and no breakage from scrunchies so, I tail or braid... But, do what you want to and see what you like best. :D

Couldn't imagine the tangles of doing that with longer hair... Wearing it down I mean... perhaps I'll try it tonight...

I wore my hair down to sleep most of the time in winter before joining here - in the summer it was too hot to have my hair on my face and neck, so I'd braid or bun it. But I remember having to brush tangles out of my hair probably 50% of the time when I wore my hair down to sleep, because I'm kind of a rough sleeper, I move all night. Since joining here, I braid it nearly every night, and no tangles!

I don't currently have either a silk pillowcase or silk sleeping cap, but I intend to buy both at the earliest opportunity - although that will probably be a year or two from now.

I have tailbone length and I put it in a bun but don't use a scrunchie and real quickly put the sleep cap on and I also have satin pillow cases.

My hair is currently at about mid-calf length and I have satin sheets and pillowcase on my bed. I almost always braid my hair before bed but very rarely I'll leave it down if it's still drying. I don't like to leave it down when I sleep because I end up with a lot more tangles in the morning and my husband is more likely to get it tangled up on him since we both toss and turn quite a bit during the night. I've contemplated a sleep cap, but I have a ton of hair and things that I put on my head like bandannas don't like to stay there for very long and I've gotten used to wearing a braid.

I used to sleep with my hair loose every night, but since I started braiding it at night I've noticed that I have far fewer tangles in the morning and it's a lot easier to brush and style the next day.

Right now, my hair is loose at night, but when it was longer, I braided it in a single french braid every night, and I've slept with satin pillowcases for years. I tried a sleep cap, but it annoys me too much.

My hair loves my satin sleep cap. I've tried the satin pillow case it was good. I like the satin sleep cap. I put mine up in a quick bun or English braid. My hair seems happier since I've started wearing a sleep cap.

I use a top knot and sometimes a sleep cap and sometimes a satin pillowcase. If I don't use at least a top knot, I wake up looking like Lyle Lovett.

I used to wear BSL-waist length hair loose.. and that was a tangly mess in the morning, to say the least. I toss and turn a lot (especially when trying to get to sleep).

Now I braid it or put it in a braided bun secured with a flexi 8. I haven't put it in a bun for the past week or so because I can't find the flexi 8 I usually use to bun it. I try to have my hair be damp or dry when I braid it, though I will occasionally just get out of the shower, braid it and immediately fall asleep.

I have a satin pillowcase.. but I rarely sleep on it. It helps reduce frizziness in the morning when I do sleep on it, though.

I do a loose braid on top of my head every night and put it over my pillow. I put a bit of oil at the ends when braided, and don't use anything to tie it up. Works for now. No tangles in the morning :)

Mine is not so long yet, so I just use a silk pillowcase, and flip my hair over the pillow, so I am not lying directly on it. A bonus is, that I keep the volume and the curls the next day. I think when it gets too long to do this, I will sleep in a braid.

I have a sleeping cap and it eliminates tangles for me. I would never do without it and even wear it if I go for a nap. I was so upset when I went to another city for the weekend and realised I had left it at home that I raided the bathroom in our hotel room and slept wearing the shower cap rather than with loose hair. Sleeping caps reduce or even eliminate tangles. Worth every penny!

I agree with Sarahlabyrinth, sleep caps are gems! I have a silk one, and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made for my hair. Not to mention the silk pillowcase I bought, but I haven't used it for a while as it needs to get washed and I don't quite know how to wash silk. I'm afraid I'd damage it somehow.

I read you can handwash silk in a big plastic container with a mild hand soap, do you think this sounds like a decent idea? ...But how do I know if my hand soap is mild or not? :o

I put some coconut oil from mid to tips, then comb with a wide wooden comb, and make two simple braids (I spend 15 minutes-time or so, depends on how much tangled is my MBL-WL). I sleep over a satin-silk pillowcase. And the morning after i just have to undo my braids and run my fingers a bit :)

Wosie, I wash my silk pillowcases normally, in the washing machine, with gentle program and cold water. And they look great :)

When I had SL hair I did a braid and used coconut oil on the tips and slept on a silk pillow case as well. Never had any tangles!

I wash my silk sleeping cap or the silk pillowcase in the kitchen sink with Dawn Dish washing soap. Then hang them outside (in nice weather) or inside if too cold. Works fine.

I've been into bunning or braiding loosely on the back of my head. I have a curved pillow, sleep on my side, and my sleep is still enough to make my Mom check on me even now. Sooo, it works for me :) but since I don't even roll over I don't know how it would hold up. Last night was a standard bun w/ spin pin, and tonight will probably be a french braid or a double braid.

I usually do a lose braid. I think I'll buy a memory foam pillow before I get a silk pillowcase as my neck gets very sore and I don't like the idea of a slippy pillowcase! Both are currently out of my price range but I've just bought some silk noile so I may take a wee bit of that and sew a quick pillowcase since it's not a slippy fabric but I feel that kind of defeats the object. I wear my hair down if it's drying and there usually isn't any tangles then either and my hair tangled like anyone's business if it's down usually!

I normally just wrap a satin scarf over my hair for bed. But I'm thinking of getting satin pillow cases as well. Sleeping without a wrap is a major no for my hair type as it will lead to dried out, tangled and matted hair that cannot be rescued

I braid my hair, then put it in a satin sleep cap. Cost like 2 bucks at walmart... can't go wrong!

I typically bun it, but sometimes I'm brazen enough to wear it loose [my husband and I co-sleep with our boys, and none of them can lay still..] :) :disco:

I tried both a satin and silk sleep caps and I couldn't get them to stay on for the life of me. When it did stay on during the night I woke up completely drenched in sweat. It was really gross. I don't want to switch to new pillow cases...my grandmother made the ones on my bed and she recently passed away. I just braid it for sleep on cotton pillow cases. It doesn't bother me.

My hair is at waist. I usually loosely bun atop my head and hold that with a few claw clips. I have tried different types of pillow cases and if they are too slippery as is the case with satin or silk, I wake up with a stiff neck. I like the satin sleep cap with chiffon at top to let some air in, but as far as this thread...cap it is!

I recently got a couple of satin pillow cases and couldn't believe what a difference they make. I sleep with my hair loose (CBL, or so), and still have to do a little detangling, but nothing like I used to do.

On a side note, I like to stack two pillows because one just isn't thick enough, and now they have a tendency to slide apart at night. Mildly annoying, but something I can live with.

I wear a silk scarf with my hair in a bun inside it, but it tends to slide off at some point in the night (I toss and turn a lot). I might look into a silk pillowcase at some point. I have to wear it up or it will without fail end up trapped under my boyfriend.

I can't wear my hear down anymore. Past Apl, it tangles waaaaay too much. And with thick hair like mine, it would take forever to comb out. Any kind of braid keeps tangles to a minimum, although I prefer pigtail braids since single ones tend to make me sweaty.

I use a silk sleep cap, it is really fine material and I made it myself. When it gets dirty, I wash it in cheapy shampoo that has SLS in, so wouldn't use it for my hair. I wring it out in a towel and it dries really quickly. Not sure how i will get on with it in the summer, but I will persever as my hair is so fine, it needs all the help it can get. I also have a silk pillow case, as added security. I have not really been able to bun or braid it at night, I prefer it loose in the cap. My hair is currently entering the mid back abyss, it might be gone for some time!

I used a loved a sleep cap when I was constantly brushing out my curls. Now, I just pineapple my hair to preserve my curl more. When my waves start to diminish, I sleep in a dutch braid to bring them back.

Plus, my sleep cap got stretched out and I just haven't been bothered to buy a new one lol.

I used to pineapple my hair on the top of my head but, oddly enough, it would loosen my curls. I think, now having learned more, it was for other reasons. I also used to braid my hair fairly loosely.

I recently purchased this http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003I5ZMDY/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and so far, it's been okay. I've figured out that pulling it lower on my forehead (not my favorite thing to do) and also lower than my hairline in the back helps it stay on. I've only had it move, never had it come off, though. I ordered it from Amazon, but the reviews there say that it's selling at Walmart for $2.99. I just don't have a Walmart anywhere near me, lol. I'm mostly satisfied with it, but I haven't had it for too long so I can't say whether it has helped preserve my hair just yet.

I've never done anything to it, but mine is only butt-length. I just flip it up and over the top of the pillow so it's not getting stuck/pulled beneath me while I roll around. I guess I'm lucky because I never wake up with many tangles or anything. :)

For now, I either wear it loose or in a loose braid and I use a satin pillow case. I was using a sleep cap, but it was falling off and my hair was all flat in the morning so I stopped.
