Teach an old LHCer how to do a messy bun!

My hair has now reached solid classic, it is thick and sometimes heavy. I want to be able to do a pretty messy bun! My "problem" is that all my buns look very neat and sometimes strict, I want something new and fun! I really don't want to use any elastics, preferably my tools would be one or two sticks, a Flexi or a Ficcare. And that's it, I have been looking for tutorials for this type of bun and they all seem to include bobby pins, teasing, hairspray and tons of time. I have none of that :p

The only way I know how to do a messy bun is with bobby pins, or it just happens to me naturally because my stubborn little layers refuse to be contained. Sorry!

You could maybe try pulling random loops out of whatever bun you make. Also can you do the pencil bun (I think that's what it's called)? The one where you hold your hair in a ponytail, take one hairstick, hold it underneath, and just twist it around and around in your hair until the length is all used up, then stab it back into your bun? That one always looks messy to me, but if you have heavy classic hair, it might be too much hair for it.

The way that I've done (when I've intended them to look messy, not my normal messy) is to gather my hair into a pony tail, using a scrunchy I pull it over the pony, then twist the scrunchy and pull the hair half way through, twist another loop, pull half way through and leave the ends poofing around the scrunchy. i then pick and pull randomly to make it look as balanced as possible. If your hair is longer than 2 loops worth, you could then pull another scrunchy over the whole knot that you have, and pull hair through. Let me see if I can find a picture of the finished product.

My general method for messy bun is known as too-lazy-to-comb-it-properly. Take your uncombed hair, rake your fingers through the scalp hair to get it into a pony tail, do a normal bun. The tangles won't be any worse when you take it down then they would be if you combed it first.

Thank you for posting this question! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread since I'm looking for something similar... messy bun with hair sticks ;-) My hair is TBL, though, but I'm finding a similar issue regardless.

I've run into this and want to try it out... maybe you can decipher it a bit more easily than I can (I'm still newer to hair sticks so I'm still a bit less nimble):

I think with your length you could start out with a normal bun then tug at it to loosen it up and make it look messy. Or maybe doing that with a braided bun. Sorry if I'm not much help, my hair is mid-back length and I can do messy buns with one hair elastic. lol :)

How about doing a half-up comet bun (knot bun with the tail hanging down), and then twisting the tail and the remaining hair 'messily' around the bun? I think that could work. :)

Seriously, I have no idea. I make sleek, smooth buns and then my hair proceeds to frizz, spit out the hairtoys, develop flyaways or hair-horns, and generally do the neat-bun/messy head thing.

I gather all my hair into a high ponytail on top of my head.
I thin flip my hair over (from bottom up) over my hand and wrap the remainder of the hair around the base.
I end up with a loop (size depends if you use up whole hand or a few fingers) and ends wrapped around the base.
I do it slightly loose, not too tight.
I then spread the loop slightly into a fan and grab a little hair from each end of the "fan" and insert a fork or ficcare through the bun...sometimes the ficcare ends towards the front and other times towards the back.
I do get a "messier" bun with a fork. I then spread the bun out a little if necessary and Very rarely use bobby pins but occasionally do to make it more messy looking. I hope this all made sense. It's really easy and takes very little time. I can get this to work with a ficcare, fork or sticks.

Something similar to this (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dUhclYSWLtQ) with ought the hairtie. You will see how she ends up with a "fan". That's how mine ends up looking. Sometimes I may add a bobby pin to secure the ends. I then spread the fan, grab a piece from both ends and kind of bring them together and then insert a ficcare, fork or stick. Tug a little and spread the hair and I'm done. :)

4. Clamp about where you made the ponytail with a Ficcare or a slide or something similar.

5. Untwist the top of the twist so you have a looped poof thing.

6. Gather/pinch some hair:

7. Give the pinched hair a twist to make loops/faux curls and pin with the amish pins, anchoring them behind the clip and into the body of the twist. I usually do three of those, left, center, and right. Add stuff to the side for decoration if you want:

I just tried it, and it came out exactly as I was hoping it would. I love messy, and I love french twists, but I've never been very good at either (my hair will do messy, but it's accidental messy and it LOOKS accidental, which isn't quite what I want). Now I can have messy and a french twist all in one fabulous hair style! :D

I was playing/practicing this today and it was so much easier than I thought! I had some trouble getting my hair close enough to my head without a hair tie, but I think I will just have to get more practice. If there are any tips for that, I'll take them, I love messy looks! Thanks again :-)

I forgot to mention, that the first time I wrap the hair around the base I do it kind of tight and then the next time(s) looser. This way the base is firm and yet it will still look loose and messy, if that makes sense :).

This works SO well! I've made the loop with a loose elastic for the last two days for extra holding power, but fanned the loop out with a fork instead of using bobby pins - much more hair friendly. Thanks so much! I've really been missing messy buns, especially with summer right around the corner :)

My method is to pull my hair back into a ponytail without combing or smoothing at all, make a normal bun, and then ruffle the final product with my hands a little. But my hair tends towards messy regardless of what I do! I think I've made maybe 2 or 3 truly neat-looking buns in my life!

This may work as well. It's the GTS tunnel bun (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_5M3StueZL0) which would kind of end up with the "fan" and then after securing with a fork or sticks, you could take a bobby pin or two if necessary and spread out the bun and pin random pieces. I also do this one and spread my hair out to make it look messier. :)

I was playing around a bit with my new spin pins and did this with even spin pins :-) Still needs some adjusting with them, maybe a bobby pin or two, but I love that this is so versatile, easy, fun, and looks great!

Sorry to be a bother, Nightshade, but would you be able to do a video tutorial of how you do this bun please? It would help if I could see how it's done rather than having to twist my mind around a description. :)
