View Full Version : is it normal to have short thin hairs scattered throughout the scalp

Upon examining my scalp very close, I notice that there are short, thin hairs, very tiny in my scalp. I don't know if it's miniaturization or if it's normal. I don't notice my part widening, but it makes me very uneasy to see those little almost like vellus hairs ( of course I can only see the ones in front, I don't know if I have them all over. I don't think they grow very long, because I have never seen a skinny long hair in my sheds. Just wondering if you all could take a moment and examine your scalp to see if you have these. I would feel better, if I knew I wasn't the only one.

Well I know I have tons of these around my hairline. I get crazy flyaways too. I think these hairs just have a short growth cycle so you notice they are finer and shorter than most of the other hairs.

I have more than a few fine hairs with a terminal of only a few inches.
Our hair does a lot of really strange things and we don't realize it until we start really paying attention. My advice: ignore it unless you notice a change in your hair as a whole, not just a few hairs.

Thanks, no these are good recommendations. Like I said, these are those thin hairs you see at your hairline, but if I look closely, on top of my head, I find them there, too. Which is what makes me worry. Would you all say your crazy flyaways even on top of your head??? Like I said, they have color, but they are super fine, and I doubt some of them even grow to an inch. Some grow to 5 inches, maybe, but just weird, because they're not coming from the edges, they're throughout! Thanks, for advice to be calm, but I do get nervous as I had a long bout of shedding, a LONG one. Pregnancy helped a lot, but I still shed these fine hairs, and keep growing them as well. I can see them if I make a part, and they are in the clean part or around the "normal" hairs. thanks for answering, it does make me very depressed. To even imaging having female balding.

I have those, too. There are noticable ones around my face and ears- they stick out as little wispy curlies in the most interesting directions.

Yes but these are even smaller, super small, like 1-2 centimeters, and like I said, not just around my face and ears, but on top of my head.

For me, new growth tends to look like this. They grow in super thin and don't seem to thicken up until they're a little way out. Also, some of the finer hairs I have that stay fine don't last very long due to breakage, especially around my face. A silk pillowcase helps with that.

I honestly think that what you are seeing is new growth from all the hairs you shed in your long bout of shedding. Even if you are losing some of those baby hairs, the majority are probably still growing into "mature" hairs.
My flyaways are mostly by my ears and front of my face but there are some towards the back as well. This picture was taken7 months ago and I had absolutely tons of 1-3 inch hairs all over the place after I shed a lot of hair from wearing extensions. They have since grown into hairs long enough that most no longer fly away even though I still have enough little hairs to get that halo effect. As you can see, the hairs are not just by my hairline but literally everywhere.

Thanks, so much to everyone. I will try and be patient then. I don't notice them like that, they don't stick out. I notice, if I get close to the mirror and see them in my part, super tiny, can't yet stick out like that in the least. Hopefully it is what you all are saying, perhaps they will stay thin for a while and thicken up with time. I tried to compare with my normal long hairs, and their ends, and they don't take that long to thicken up and these definitely are staying thin for like .5 cm, so I get nervous right away. Some of my longer ones that I shed, do grow to like 5 inches, but they are thinn-er than my normal hairs. Perhaps the next cycle, they will thicken up.

Just a question for you. How have you seen this with your new growth?? ANd do they seem to take more than .5 cm to thicken up?? I Hope to God that's what it is. It's so scary to think about balding, thanks for sharing.

Absolutely. I get exactly what divinedobbie posted and they grow out to join the rest of my hair over time. Some of my hairs go from being super thin to medium thin for a couple of inches at least and then start thickening up. Also, you have M/C hair like I do, so that fine initial growing in stage will be quite noticeable. Fine hairs behave differently.
I had a couple of big sheds in the last few years and went from ii/iii to a solid ii. The new hairs that grow in after that seem to behave this way. I also find my individual hair increase slightly in thickness as my hair gets long. My hair definitely got thinner when I cut it all off. I guess it makes sense for it to grow in that way to support its own weight.
Anyway, ignore those hairs for another few months and see what they look like then. Rather than worrying about possible thinning of hair (which I don't think is happening), think about how much thicker it will be a year from now when those baby hairs are long enough join the rest!

THanks so much, for that thoughtful response. It really does calm me down. And you know what I've been through as you've gone through sheds. Maybe also like you said, they are some new hairs that have to cycle in thinner for a couple cycles and then they will thicken up. Thank you SO SO MUCH!

And for me, it's been a year without a big shed, but maybe like I said, and what you said, maybe it takes a couple cycles for them to get back to normal. I just had a baby two months ago, so I hope I don't have another big shed. I also notice, I have those finer hairs along by my ears, and they don't grow to more than 5 inches as well.
