View Full Version : Hair up/hair down, picture comparisons?

Hi all, this is kind of inspired by another thread in which people are discussing their goal lengths, and how they've increased since joining lhc.

I'm wondering if folks with TBL and longer hair wouldn't mind sharing photos of their hair up in a bun, and down. So those of us who aren't there yet can get an idea of what size bun translates into what length hair. Others might want to see hair at other lengths too, but I'd be happy with seeing how longer hair tallies up in the bun department :)

Thanks!

My hair is far from tailbone. But in case anyone wants to see shorter hair, here is a length picture along with a bun. In the length I am pulling on my hair so that you can see that there is more than there seems to be. I find that although I only have almost APL hair visually (it's grown a bit since this pic), it behaves like bottom bra strap hair so far as the buns I can make, since it stretches out to more. so I can make buns that APL people are not supposed to be able to make, if that makes sense. It's a cinnamon bun.

Good timing! I had my "slept in" braid up in a cinnabun so it was pretty decent timing to do this. I took a photo of the braided cinnabun, then took my hair down and combed it out, got the length shot, then put it up in a nautilus bun for the last shot. Those two buns are my daily go-to styles.

Just a note: comparisons might be a bit tricky depending on length, thickness and the bun used. My hair is just scraping knee (at least in the front!)

My hair is approaching classic. Here it is in a rose bun (March 2013)

I also have this set from January last year, when I was around tailbone, comparing my hair loose with it in a cinnabun:

i can't stop staring at HeavenlyTresses' hair...and i love that bun!

i'm kind of afraid to post my pictures after looking at everyone else's awesome hair! I don't really think of my hair as being all that long but i'm getting close to classic. My siggie picture is the most recent and i've had a growth spurt since then. Anyways, here's my hair in late february:

HeavenlyTresses I don't see how anyone can go past your photos without a comment/question, so I have a couple!

1. How do you care for your hair?
2. Is it very hard to manage? I imagine knee is the longest I would go, for practical reasons, I would think it would be very hard to style and keep out of the way beyond that?(or possibly before that!)

My hair refuses to be compressed, so most of my buns end up being fairly big, even though my hair isn't particularly long. :)

I posted a blog today about my whole routine, even though there's not to much to it. I wear it down or in a half up most of the time and I guess as it gets longer you make adjustments and then they become second nature like grabbing it when the wind is blowing, getting in the truck or using the bathroom. When I need to put it up I'll put it in a braid, usually a french braid which takes at the most 10 minutes.

I'm not entirely sure what this bun is called... I hold it up like I'm making a ponytail, fold it in half and wrap it like a cinnamon bun. *shrugs* The picture is from Aug 2013, but my hair is about that length now [after multiple trims]..

Oh it doesn't have a name :D And thank you! I mean, I went to the hair dresser when I had very deep V and I got home with that hair which is more like a U-shaped (but it was Mid-back length) Okay, the sig pic is one year after that and I haven't gone to the hairdresser but I've trimed it myself. Half of my hair is at hip, the other half have two layers - the longer layer is on Waist and the shorter on APL-BSL. I've trimed all of the layers through that year and that's how it is now. So actually on the sig pic and on the pic I've posted here my hair is the same.

WHERE did you get the toy in your nautilus bun?! :flower:

I second that question!!!

Also, just wanted to say, these are amazing pics...you all have such beautiful hair. It makes me smile, and feel better to see folk with hair *around* my length (I'm at hip) whose buns are not eating their heads. I've had a couple people ask recently how I fit "all that hair" into that "tiny bun"...which made me all gruff and growly...it's good to see real sized buns (small, medium and large - oh my gosh, HeavenlyTresses!), to remember that the padded, donutey buns we see in the media do not always reflect reality.

*feeling better about my regular sized bun* :D
I will try and snap some pics soon for the thread (just hard to get a pic of my length on my own lol).

It's a wooden Frau Kohler slide that I got from LHCer wendyg over on the swap boards. :) I was suuuuper happy when I learned the nautilus bun, because I couldn't get the darn slide to work with anything else!

I've had a couple people ask recently how I fit "all that hair" into that "tiny bun"...
I SO hear you! I get some serious hair envy looking at the giant buns on LHC. (Though I'm starting to think part of the largeness may just be a trick of camera angle, for those taking pics by holding the camera around their heads.) But it is fun to sport a tiny bun at the office, then hear my patients' surprise when I let it all tumble down!

just hard to get a pic of my length on my own lol
I've found the best way for me is to put my digital camera on a bookshelf with the 10-second self-timer on, sit or stand far enough away to capture the length, take 50 zillion photos until I think I finally got one right, then crop the heck out of them to get rid of the excess background. ;)

Awwyeah!!!

I usually take about 5-6 shots for each photo. Take photo, quickly grab camera to see the preview, roll my eyes when the shot is slightly off angle or whatever, then go for another shot... and so on to infinity and beyond. :hmm:

Mine is 25" (1~2" past APL), and 3.5" ponytail circumference.

loose --> bun --> braid --> ponytail. :)

I think it looks gorg like that :), I dont really like the whole straight, just growing out look. I might like to have U shaped layers similar to yours, but do you lose much thickness? I do braids quite a lot, and I like them looking thick :)

Robot Ninja} I really like the purple accent to your hair and the purple hairstick complimenting it. ...Not to mention the hair's glossiness. *in awe*

This thread is great. :cloud9:
