OK.. I know this is BAD, but I had a good thing coming my way all of a sudden. My video card broke JUST before the end of the warranty, so I went back to my on-board card, and got the money back from the broken card. That money went to 60thstreet and bought me these 4.5" dymondwoods:

Magnum http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8499/c7333pmagnumdw45xw4.th.jpg (http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c7333pmagnumdw45xw4.jpg)

Fuchsia http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3838/c7343pfuchsiadw45wr5.th.jpg (http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c7343pfuchsiadw45wr5.jpg)

And a new color!!
Sunny Skies http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/7894/c7363psunnyskiesdw45xb0.th.jpg (http://img254.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c7363psunnyskiesdw45xb0.jpg)

Eresh loved the sunny skies so much that she wanted one as well.. a 5.5". It is being sent along in the same box http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9500/c7363psunnyskiesdw55lj2.th.jpg (http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=c7363psunnyskiesdw55lj2.jpg)

I have the indigo in right now.. they just hold like a rock. Better than my ficcare even, that is saying lots!

I just ordered a custom fork from them as well. I can't wait to get it. Although I know it will take at least two weeks. I highly recommend their custom forks. From my experience they almost always have higher quality. :)

Here's their picture. It's long and skinny because that's what I asked for.

Congratulations on your purchases, eadwine and eresh! Will we get to see action pics, when they arrive, pretty please? I'm always curious how hair toy colours show up in the hair.

Greetings

katharine

P.S. I had been wondering if our favourite hair toy sellers were experiencing a down-turn in business while LHC was down (with no online hair toy enabling going on). Or maybe it was just the opposite - lots of LHCers trying to fight their withdrawal symptoms by visiting hair toy websites and ordering new hair pretties...

eadwine

They will. I could pick my top as well as the length, and color. They also make wider toothed combs. Just contact them and find out :)

Well.. TWO boxes arrived here today.. the sticks of alesis218 AND the 60thstreet forks. Eresh, your fork is in the mail, you should get that tomorrow. :D

Here they are, without and with flash:

Ebony:

Padauk wood (too long for me really, but I will save it for other buns, or for when my hair is longer):

Fuchsia (that one is just plain purple in my eyes):

Your hair looks so much thicker than ii and so much longer than 23.

eadwine
March 26th, 2008, 01:20 PM
Thank you!

It IS a little longer now, but shouldn't be much. Soon I will get a new measurement done. If it IS much I am gonna eat my hat, because that 23 is from around end December and I still don't see the growth in the pics hehe

However I AM an ii, 2 5/8" on the mark all the time. I have stopped measuring when it was that for three months on end

Eadwine they are all gorgeous! Congratulations on a happy hair-toy day!
The fuchsia (I love 60th street's fuchsia dymondwood) and the new sunny skies colours are very happy and uplifting :)
You can use the long padauk stick for figure 8's or infinity buns.
The ebony stick is elegance personified. Ebony is always sooo classy!

eadwine
March 26th, 2008, 02:33 PM
Thanks!!

For a fig 8 it will be too long still.. it will be poking in my neck then, but an infinity will work, WHEN I can get one done that is. Need more hair! There is one bun that requires me to have longer sticks, but I have to practice it a little bit again as I haven't done that in almost a year now.

Kimson Handicraft sends internationally and also accepts PayPal.

I was just doing my random internet browsing and came across this using this link with birds (http://www.handicraft-vn.com/shop/hair-pin-craft-bird-hair-stick-c-72_154.html). I figured I'd share :)

Not with sticks, but I have a horn hairfork from Kostkamm which I use a lot.
It's not quite as stiff as wood, but almost - not brittle at all.

Actually, it really resembles plastic a lot.... ;)

Of course, the sticks would be stiffer if they're thick, really thin bits might be a bit flexible.

Edit: I don't really like the fact that it says at the top of the page that they have ivory items. Most ivory is illegal, all of it is questionable at best.
But at first glance I don't see any actual products made of ivory.

Neoma, you must have a bird hairstick!
That's what I'm thinking, coppercurls! I love it when people enable me to do what I want to do! :flower:

I am curious about how long these sticks are. A 7" stick, for example, would overwhelm my relatively small bun.

kwaniesiam
March 30th, 2008, 06:28 PM
Those are really cute. I have jewelry made of buffalo horn, and while it is rather bendy, I'd imagine something thicker like a hairstick would hold up well unless you have gigantic scary monster buns that devour hairtoys

Did anybody check out the gecko hair sticks? They look really neat! I wonder how well, they'd hold up though.

I also thought that! duh.

That is one huge stick! Very pretty, but looks painful. You should enter your hair in weightlifting competitions.

eadwine
April 5th, 2008, 01:03 AM
Not painful at all really, it is quite comfortable, and I don't feel anything on the weight when it is in my hair.

I wonder.. this would mean I could easily wear some heavily ornate sticks without being bothered by any weight issues.

(not that I like heavily ornate, but that aside)

He just sent me the pictures.. and I am SO thrilled!

:cheese:

He bought the topper elsewhere, was already on a stick so he had to pry that off, and after that he made his own snakewood stick under it (6.5", 4" usable).

BIIIIG difference!!

This is the original:
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/4441/dragonhairstickrt2.th.jpg (http://img512.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dragonhairstickrt2.jpg)

Mely
April 6th, 2008, 02:44 PM
Yes, having that lovely turned stick makes a huge difference.
This is mainly why I don't bother trying to make my own hair sticks--or add toppers to "blanks", because the only blanks I have ever seen are rather plain, and I'm spoiled by having turned or carved sticks. I don't know anything about carving or turning wood.

eadwine
April 6th, 2008, 03:03 PM
Yeah I hear ya!

I like carved, turned much better as well. I wish I knew how to, but until I get a devicemahickey... nope. Hehe.

Wow, that stick is gorgeous! Is the man a seller on eBay? I'd love to see his stuff. My hair is about 1/2 as thick as yours - I sure hope he does teeny tiny little sticks for us fine haired gals! If I got one like the one you did, it would probably fall right out of my hair!

Here are two pictures of a cheapo hairstick that I got that didn't even cost me 10USD including shipping to my country (and it came in a box registered mail!). It is SO pretty! I purchased it at this seller (http://stores.ebay.com/Jewelrygooddeal). I have seen my stick come by again, so.. if you see it, you can snatch it :)

It is acryllic, and you always have to wait and see with that stuff, but there are NO sharp edges, and the rose and things seem to be laying INSIDE (3D). I do need scroos to make sure it is sitting secure because the stick is so smooth, but otherwise, it's great :)

i love how you call that a cheepo when i cant afford sticks that cost more than a dollar... :) thats why i end up making my own stuff... i just dont have an extra 10$ lying around.. i dont have an extra 5$ laying around.. its cute!
i just cant justify spending 10$ on a hairtoy...

Nothing wrong with "cheapo" if it's good quality and is nice to the hair.

It looks great in your hair. :)

eadwine
April 9th, 2008, 07:04 AM
Yep, thanks! It is MUCH better quality than for example a Claire's stick, and those Claire's sticks over here cost more than this one! Brr.

April 9th, 2008, 07:34 AM
how long is the stick?

eadwine
April 9th, 2008, 07:36 AM
6 3/4" total length, and up to where the decoration starts is 4.5". :)

China Cat Sunflower
April 9th, 2008, 07:37 AM
I am just trying to buy sticks and can't make up my mind about 5.5" or 6". They are from VK Design and has a glass ball on top :) Whath do you think?

eadwine
April 9th, 2008, 07:41 AM
There is a VKdesigns topic for that ;)

Just measure the diameter of your regular bun and take a bit more length than that :)

Raederle
April 9th, 2008, 07:46 AM
Just beautiful -- both the stick and your hair gracing the stick, making the stick look even prettier.

eadwine
April 9th, 2008, 07:49 AM
Raederle, you are making me blush!

Too bad my hair is sooo slippery itself that just the stick won't hold it up, but that is why they invented scroos I guess :D

Pretty stick -- that one caught my eye too! I have bought from that seller too.

When I was really just getting started with hair toys, I bought a group of similar acrylic sticks. I think the acrylic ones are a little less user friendly than wood or metal sticks for newbies. Maybe because the ends are a little thicker/more blunt. I tried them again recently though and have had better luck with them. Either experience or longer hair helps with them!

Thanks :)

Apparently it helps, so I have heard.. I don't mind them being sharp or blunt, as long as they are ROUNDED. A total blunt flat edge will NOT go in my hair.. not even when it is tiny!

I did manage to get it to hold my hair as a sole stick, simply by misting the hair before doing the updo, and then sliding the stick in, held like a charm from then on.

Thanks all! The supply changes frequently, so I saw. Just looked yesterday and there were items in there I hadn't seen when I bought this one. :)

Lovely! A mad life recently sold another dragon stick, with a wooden dragon bead on the end:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=45225&item=360040501271

After I saw this dragon stick, I have asked him to make me a similar stick, only "blank", so I can add my own bead. I have a mammoth ivory dog bead that I intend to put on the stick. The end of the stick he is making will have a sort of platform on which the dog bead can sit (just as the stick with the wooden dragon bead had)

Here are some other cute beads that might be able to go on the end of such a stick:
Lampwork dog (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEBTOX:IT&item=250235413105&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI)

Owl beads (http://cgi.ebay.com/jawjee-Owl-lampwork-bead-focal-COCOA-owlets-SRA-LE_W0QQitemZ250236386441QQihZ015QQcategoryZ34070QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Ok, i'm clueless regarding hairsticks/hair forks... how do you use the starlite u's? In another thread I posted awhile back, someone suggested that I get double ended knitting needles and bend them--I'm assuming she meant in a way similar to the starlite u's. Now having looked up a picture of them, I have a better idea of what she meant, but I'm still not quite sure how to use one in my hair.

I'm wearing a u-shaped starlite fork in a figure 8 right now. It has become my favorite fork - so light and comfortable! I insert it just like any other fork or stick - point the tips away from the bun, then flip over and push through the bun, catching the outer loops (or top and bottom of the 8) as well as some scalp hair.

Eadwine, could you please try to describe this colour? I have debated on buying it, because I love aqua very much, but after contacting them with a question, I was told that it is more green than blue. I like the intense blue-ish aqua but not the green-ish aqua, that much. So it's a chance to ask someone who actually holds it in her hands.
Thank you

ETA: Do you think it's sort of Teal? Or Turquoise? Hmmm
In any event, whatever it is, it contrasts nicely with your hair. A good buy.

Umm I JUST got it in my hair after half an hour of hophopARGHing (see other topic I just started), and I am NOT taking it out again

No, it is not teal, that is too dark, it is closer to turqoise. It DOES lean more to the green than to the blue, I was afraid of that too, but once I saw it.. WOW.

In my humble opinion: go for it. If you happen to not like it, oh trust me people will be pulling each other's shirts to get to it first on the swap board ;)

I'm STILL not sure on the length...
Lots of people seem to have 5.5" total length forks, but I contacted 60th Street and they said that 5" func length = 6" total length.
So the 5.5" = 4.5" functional length... that's only 11cm.

I'm not sure if I should get the 5.5 or 6" total length. Help! :(

Hey Ashley, I just re-measured mine, and the prong length is closer to 4.5" for it's 5.5" total length. How big you want your fork mostly depends on your preference, I think. The 5.5" works for my just-below-classic-length hair (which is between 3.75" and 4" thick), but you might like more fork to show in your updos. If you know you like 5" prongs, then I'd go for 5" prongs. :D

Ashley
April 28th, 2008, 03:32 PM
Thanks Lillian :D, actually, I came to the conclusion that 5" forks were actually too big which results in more unstability when it comes to updos. I finally went ahead and ordered the same as yours - the 4.5" prong length which should be shipped out any day! I can't wait. They sure look lovely.

DecafJane

Their shipping is REALLY fast, and I love the little pouches that they come in - all of mine are different colours and they are so bright and cheerful. :)

The three-prong fork holds better than the two-prong, even in shorter hair, for those interested. I should add that I am using them like a hairstick at the moment, rather than as a bun anchor.

I'd also like to know how much you payed for shipping; is it really $13?
It was a buy it now thing; 12 flowers for one price. Yes shipping is 13, which is not bad really.

WOW those are bigger than I thought!! VERY nice!!!! Do send us the linkage, pretty please??? :flowers:
I linked already ;)

This is the actual order: link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=380020687669)
