View Full Version : Hair type me! Hair is fairly straight but some sections curl too...

So I've been here for a few months but I'm still unsure of my hair type. I'm pretty positive I'm either 1b or 1c but I really don't understand the difference between the body waves and s waves.

Also, my hair is quite wavy/curly in the front sections and the underneath layers, but the top part is fairly straight.

Here are pictures from two different weeks I took hair typing photos. Both were washed as normal, combed in the shower, patted dry very very gently and then left to dry untouched. Picture on left is untouched, picture on right is after being combed.

The second time I also took a picture of the type of wave I'll get:

ETA: Sorry, my hair was still damp during the second set of hair typing photos.

I would say you are a 1b-c

According to the topmost photo on the left, I'd say your hair is 1c, although I'm not an expert on typing 1s.

Technically, I think hair-typing is supposed to be done on hair that has been shampooed and not even conditioned, and then dried totally without touching (i.e. no combing in the shower). However, obviously this is unrealistic for some hair types...personally, I do it on hair washed and conditioned and then drip-dried.

Those curls on the sides of your face are interesting - they look to be 2b/c ringlets. Do you think they behave differently because they're shorter or manipulated differently while drying thanks to being next to your face? After my of my hair became post-LHC growth, I noticed a significant change in texture, so your current texture may also relate to pre-LHC haircare routines (or not, just throwing this thought out there, since it was my personal experience).

I'd say 1c, and those loose ringlet bits are 2c. A lot of people have more than one hair type--very common with curlies--so I'm not surprised by those curlier bits. It's not uncommon for hair underneath to be wavier, either, although I'm not sure why.

You and I have similar hair. My front and underneath layers are curly, but the top and back sections are straight (though mine have a sliiight more wave than yours do). I kind of took the average of my extremes and called it a 2a...But for you, I think 1c would be appropriate...or even 1c/2a.

I think I'd call it 1c. But I get the random curly sections too (mine are especially likely at the nape), so I know what you're talking about. Quirky hair!

I would call it 1c as well. It's definitely not 1b, and 2a means loose waves all over the hair and you mainly have wavy hair on the sides. :) My hair is also wavier on the sides, I wish all my hair was like my sides...

Okay so I did yet another hair typing session. This time I detangled before my shower, shampooed carefully, conditioned the ends, rinsed with water and then I didn't touch it with a comb, fingers or towel for the next five hours.

Here is the first pic:

And here is another one after another half an hour to make sure it was absolutely dry this time:

I think I'm going to type myself as 1c. Thank you everyone for your help!
