View Full Version : How Long Does Your Hair Take to Dry?

With no assistance whatsoever, for me, my hair takes about 2-3 hours to dry.

I mostly bun my hair after washing, it takes more than 12 hours to dry in a bun. If I let it hang down, it takes about 4-5 hours.

September 13th, 2008, 11:19 AM
about 2-2.5 hours, though sometimes it's still the tiniest bit damp at the end of that.

But I rarely do that, I braid and go to bed. It's dry by morning.

Melein

It depends on the temperature - on average I'd say about four hours. If I put it in an updo while still wet, though, it won't dry at all!

Akiko

After towel dry, it takes an hour or less.

Neysa
September 14th, 2008, 10:56 AM
On dry days as little as 3 hours. On humid days or if I braid it or bun it or whatever, as little as 6 hours, as long as all night if I don't take the braid out.

Right now in southern californa, i walk outside in the heat and it'll be dry in a half an hour if I flip my hair around. Winter, it seems like in never dries, I'll say 4-5 hours left alone. (Oh, and its always down)

danacc
September 14th, 2008, 10:30 PM
Definitely more than 1 hour, and less than 3, from what I recall the last time I was awake while it dried loose. I usually put it in a loose braid while it's still damp and then go to sleep; I wash in the evening.

About six to eight hours, lately.

Four hours. I shudder to think how long it will take when I reach my goal of waist!

psycho
September 15th, 2008, 01:02 AM
Down, even in the Wyoming "lack of humidity", about five hours
Bunned or braided, it can take days

Actually, the longest I've ever kept my hair braided wet was three days (re-braiding morning and night) before giving up and letting it dry down. I really wanted to see how long it would take, but I'm beginning to think my hair just seals in moisture to the extent that it would not have dried if I kept it up

September 15th, 2008, 11:28 AM
At the length it is now, it usually takes at least and hour to dry. It takes double that when it's around shoulder length, so I'm a bit scared to find out how long it will take once my hair reaches BSL. :P

If I don't use any product, about 2-3 hrs. If I use product, 6-7 hrs.

In the summer it takes less than 1 hour sometimes 30 minutes. In the winter it can take 2 or 3 hours but I keep it under a towel when it really cold, and this winter thats going to happen alot (thanks stupid high energy prices)

jojo
September 16th, 2008, 04:18 PM
Well I am a funny one, down it takes about 2-3 hours and bunned well 12 hours after and its still damp and I am only BSL! but I notice when i do a deep condish it dries in half the time!

In dry Texan desert, about 8-10 hours, down. For this reason, I hate washing/wetting my hair.

mooglewoo
September 16th, 2008, 07:47 PM
Mostly dry takes 2-2.5 hours. I have no idea for all the way dry, cause I'm usually asleep by then. If I took a shower in the morning for whatever reason, usually it gets put up, which takes all day to dry -when I undo my braid at night, it will still be wet in the middle.

About 3-4 hours on warmer days and up to six hours on cold/wet days.

sexyjacksparrow

Assuming I'm wearing my hair down then about 1.5-2 hours. If it's bunned or braided it's still damp by the time I get home from work (about 13 hours after washing) so I tend to take it down for the last hour before bed to completely dry it.

mortiziia
September 17th, 2008, 07:58 AM
Average 4 hours now, more than 5 h when it was longer. The humidity of the weather in the UK must have something to do with it, I remember it used to take less than three hours to dry when I was home.

There are so many variables in my answer to this. Washing method, conditioners used or not used, whether I damp bun or not. I washed my hair yesterday and still feel moisture in it this morning and yet there have been other times that it dried out very quickly (within an hour or two). I find that I don't like my hair when it dries too fast so I'm working on methods to have it dry more slowly.

September 18th, 2008, 04:29 AM
If I leave it hanging around, about 4-5 hours, when it's braided or bunned forever!! shudder: Ok, maybe not that bad, but washed and bunned in the evening means still wet the next evening...

My hair takes anywhere from 2-4 hours to dry.

Nanni
July 1st, 2009, 04:09 AM
My microfibre-towel cut down the time it takes to dry by at least an hour. After wash I put my hair up in a turban with the towel and leave it in for 15 minutes. When I take it down it takes about 2 hours to dry. Not to bad

ericthegreat

It depends on when I rinse it and what my immediate routine is afterward. If I am rinsing late and night and got straight to bed with wet hair, it will stay damp until 10:30 to 11AM the next morning. If on a rare occasion I get to rinse it during the day and I don't use a blow dryer at all, then it would take anywhere from 3 and a half hours to over 4 hours to dry.

Usually about 1 hour in warm weather.2 hours in winter.

Quixii
July 1st, 2009, 10:36 PM
Well, I'm not entirely certain. I always squeeze out a bunch of liquid with my towel first, and then I pony tail it, and then I usually don't watch it. I take my showers at night so I often go to bed before it dries all the way. It also depends on the weather - I remember I took a shower right before I went to bed and when I woke up, it was still damp in places, seven hours later (in the winter). Lately, it seems my hair only takes 2-3 hours to dry (though like I said, I don't really watch it, so it practically seems like it goes from damp to dry without me noticing at all xD).

MomoKoNoHanna

About 2 hours to fully dry. I do not use heat as my hair is damaged enough from dyes so it gets a little towel dry then it is set off to air dry.

If I let my hair air dry, that takes 2-3 hours. If I put my hair up, it can stay damp for 8-10 hours. This can be uncomfortable in an air conditioned office, so I usually take it down halfway through the day and let it dry some more before putting my hair back up.

ok, i got out of the shower at 2 pm, and in between bunning, letting it down every so often, adding some oil here and there, my hair is finally dry. it's now 11:52 pm... so almost 10 hours

My hair takes like 1 hour to dry, but I bang my head like crazy, if I leave my hair alone, it would take more, but I get headaches if I have wet hair for long time. During winter when I blow dry it, it takes about 30 minutes.

VashX2000

About an hour in the winter, about 2 hours in the summer when it's humid. If I go outside to dry it and it's not humid, about 20 minutes to half an hour.

I mostly bun my hair after washing, it takes more than 12 hours to dry in a bun. If I let it hang down, it takes about 4-5 hours.
That's about the same for me. If I can't wait the 4-5 hours when wearing it down, I diffuse on low for about 15 minutes. That cuts the drying time to about 2.5 hours. :)

July 14th, 2009, 11:17 AM
Over an hour easy. Depending on whether or not I style it prior to it being only minimally damp or even dry, it may not dry for many more hours.

I usually wash my hair before I go to bed, and sleep with it loose. It is sort of damp when I get up in the morning, so I'll say around 8 hours to dry if I just leave it alone. It dries faster if I comb it and move it around.

July 22nd, 2009, 01:55 AM
My hair takes an entire day to dry completely in the winter, but only four hours to half a day in the summer. It's kind of a bummer as I end up with wet hair all the time now that I'm working out more.

For-e-ver. Minimum 5 hours (if the stars align, it's warm out, no humidity, I towel-dry first...), often 8-9 hours. And my hair isn't even to my waist! There's a reason that infrequent washing appeals to me.

If my hair is up for the entire time it takes to dry (say, if I'm at work), it takes at least 8 hours to dry, sometimes more if I don't take it down! It seems ridiculous since my hair isn't even APL....

3-4 hours minimum. I have no idea why it takes so long, my hair is only a little past APL and not super thick. However, I'm undergoing a rather drastic texture change, so that might be part of it. :hmm:

Around 3 hours! Sometimes between 2 1/2 hours (but that 2 1/2 are the things I do to air dry like the fan, especially after shower time I pat lightly of excess water from my hair, then wrap around with absorbant towel for about 15-20 minutes, then remove, pat lightly again! I always flip my hair front and back motion into flicking the excess water off again! Then wait for my hair to air dry! But it's actually 3 hours for it to dry on this Summer Season!

I keep it under a towel turban for about 20-30 minutes so when I am taking it down my hair is half dry. And it needs only about 30-40 minutes to dry in 90%. I have still some damp areas on my scalp and maybe the bottom layers are a little bit damp too, but generally it's like... 3, 2, 1, dry.

Hmm, well I wash my hair at night before I go to bed and it's always still damp when I get up in the morning. I honestly have no idea how long it would take if I washed it in the morning, but my guess is in the five hour range.

Lady Jo

I think it only takes me 30 minutes to an hour to dry it as I really have fine hair :(

MNoelH
August 15th, 2010, 07:42 PM
I'd say about 8-10 hours. I go to bed with it wet and it's still damp in the morning. I was just reading the damp bunning thread and I would assume it would take a couple of days to dry if I did that. If I put my hair in a ponytail after washing in the morning, it will still be pretty wet at the pony spot when I take it down after work

poloandpearls
August 17th, 2010, 10:31 AM
I haven't counted hours but roughly a day if it's out & I'm indoors. In the sun, 2-3 hours if it's out.
In a bun, outdoors, all day.

I usually try to wash it in the afternoon so it has some daytime to dry before I go to bed (otherwise it's really cold / uncomfortable!) & can dry all through the night.

I hate people seeing my hair wet, & it isn't particularly comfortable either, so I'll put off washing for a few days if I have to, to find time where I'm not going out & can let it dry slowly.

chelseamichelle
August 17th, 2010, 10:51 AM
About 10-12 hours.. But thats after being brushed and shaken around and scrunched constantly.. I can't just leave it, it'll never dry :(

My hair is VERY fine, but I have a lot of it. Maybe thats the reason

My hair takes about 3 hours or so to dry when just left to dry, though there might still me a bit of moistness in it for a few hoers more. It would take at least a day to dry completely in a braid.

Variables unknown, I don't normally style my hair wet, very rarely braided or bunned while damp. I am an indoors type girl, so in-the-sun doesn't quite apply.

If my hair is at all damp, I cannot groom, it tangles like mad. If I do manage to pull a brush or comb through wet hair, it immediately tangles worse than before as soon as the pass is made.

Anyhow my hair can take anywhere between 5 and 25 hours to be dry enough to brush, no fooling. I wash infrequently 1-2 times a week, because it takes a day between to dry, so that I can groom.

luxepiggy
September 3rd, 2010, 07:47 PM
If I wrap it in a towel for the first 15-20 minutes, then remove the towel & finger-comb it out, it's usually dry in under an hour (^(oo)^)

Antipodienne

Down, about 2-3 hours, but usually I damp bun, and in Florida's sticky humid climate, it can take literally days. That's right, days. Ugh.

dianehair
September 4th, 2010, 01:29 AM
2 hours to air dry totally.

I never towel dry as this causes damage. I also comb gently through my CO only wash so my hair is totally snag free when drying.

Just before my hair is totally dry I smooth a tiny, tiny amount of leave in conditioner on the ends to smooth and that's it. My hair is always shiny and without damage from heat tools. I do not use a hairdryer, straightening irons, nothing whatsoever.

If I want curls, I just make an updo whilst my hair is slightly damp. A Nautilus bun or French twist makes lovely soft curls.

JenniferNoel

Four hours average. It takes longer to dry now that there's more of it. It may be shorter, but the density is pretty, well, dense. And I have one of those hair types that clumps when wet therefore making the whole drying process even more uncomfortable.

2 or 3 hours when I used my turby towel first, otherwise I think about 4 hours. When I leave it in a bun it looks like it never dries, only when I do the bun and hangin out my hair then it dries very quick.

Mirrimblackfox
September 6th, 2010, 08:08 AM
Right now? About 30 minutes, when it's a good bit longer (mid back) an hour to an hour and a half. But not if it is up, if it is bunned or braided it will take a good 6 to 8 hours. I have extremely fine, curlly/wavy, very (very very) soft hair but lots of it. I think the curl makes it dry a bit quicker.

I gently squeeze dry my hair with a towel, after pushing out all the water I can with my hands. I then bend over and fluff my hair (gently) with the towel for a minute or so.

I don't use heat, but then I don't use conditioner ether, I suspect that would make it take longer to dry.

sunrain

When my hair was more damaged/ill-taken care of, I used to be able to get up at 7:30, take a shower, be out by 8:00, and it would be dry by 8:45 for me to straighten it before I leave for work. It was also longer, too. However, now that I'm taking better care of it.. I wake up the same time, but it's not even close to try by 8:45, so I don't even bother XD.. I just comb it and put it up or clip it to the side. It's also shorter now.

Is it true that healthier hair takes longer to dry?

My hair holds water like a sponge.
Mine takes about 1 and a half to 2 hours, sometimes 2 and a half if it's really cold.

I usually gently squeeze out excess water and wrap it in a towel for 15 minutes, then let it air dry. I'm thinking of using one of those microfibre towels meant for cars...

Natalia
September 27th, 2010, 12:45 PM
Well i cant vouch for daytime since i normally shower at night but even with a light squeeze before laying down, a towel over my pillow (which ir emove once wet), and absorbant sheets it still takes 8 - 10 hours and even then i usually have the damp spot where my head meets the pillow. It used to be totally dry in the morning before i started doing WO i think the extra sebum slows it down especially at the scalp. I dont mind its not like i go or do anything that requires perfectly dry hair. I imagine it would be faster durring the day (especially in this heat its 105 F right now) sicne id be moving but i much prefer a shower before bed than dry hair.

It depends on the temperature - on average I'd say about four hours. If I put it in an updo while still wet, though, it won't dry at all!

Same here. 4 hours,if its loose, in a bun - I'm not sure,maybe a week or more.

Like others, if I bun my hair there's no telling how long it takes to dry (at least 7 hours). I try to leave it down as long as possible so that it is dry by the end of the day but I don't always get up in time.

It seems like it takes forever! If I leave it down it dries faster but part of that is because the water is soaking into the back of my shirt. LOL I like to braid it back when it's part way dry and it will stay damp until the next morning (I wash at night)

mine is short, just past my jaw, & it still takes me a good hour & a half, sometimes 2, before it dries naturally. it's super fine too, but just so overprocessed that i guess it does not want to let go of any water :p

Forever! I usually shower at night, so it's not too bad, but if I have to shower in the morning, I usually just messy bun it, put a scarf over it and forget it. Luckily, I stretch washes so my hair isn't wet too often.

Qwackie, you're a lucky duck! :p

About 50 minutes. I shower in the morning and its nearly dry till I leave the house.

My hair needs about 2 hours to dry. I experience that my hair dries faster if I headbang my hair a little bit, so the thick strands are divided into smaller ones. A nice side effect is more volume :).

Putting my hair up in a towel after showering makes a huge difference to how fast it dries. (That might sound obvious to most people, but it didn't occur to me til recently and I always skipped this step out of laziness!) After 15 minutes in a towel and 45 minutes hanging loose, my hair is mostly dry. There's a section under the canopy in the back that is still quite damp, but the rest is fine.

I payed more attention one of the last washing days, and it took about 3-4 hours before it was dry.

lunalovegood, my hair dries faster if I put a towel over it (I'm usually too lazy too wrap it, too :p).

I miss the summer - usually, I could wash my hair during the day, and it would dry faster because I would have the ceiling fan on! :)

Mine takes forever! up to 4 hours if it's not un an updo and if I make an updo then the center part dries only while I'm sleeping, after I take off the updo. It's kind of frustrating :p

It depends on what I used to wash my hair. If I do baking soda and vinegar, an hour and a half. If i use those natural solid shampoo and solid conditioner things I recently bought, maybe 3-4 hours.
