So I have an opportunity to get 2 silk pillows very cheap, new but second hand. Do they really help your hair/skin?

I don't know about skin. Satin pillowcases can help with mechanical damage or breakage though, with your hair if you don't use a sleep cap. The slick fabric lessens the friction on your hair on the fabric.

I have a satin (not silk) pillowcase from Sallys and I LOVE it. If you can get them cheap, do!

Definitely! It's great for keeping a hair style, shine, smoothness, and frizz control, it helps maintain moisture balance (because it's not as absorbent as cotton) and helps keep cuticles flat.
If you can get a good deal, go for it. If not, make one out of silk shirt or cover your pillow or your hair with a silk scarf.

Some people dislike the feel of silk and how they tend to slide off silk, so I recommend experimenting with something affordable before your make up your mind.

Yes. I was skeptical for a long time, but after switching, I definitely notice a difference.

Yes, definitely worth it. Not only is it better for your hair it is better for your face. You will get less wrinkles!

I've been using satin but I ordered a silk one the other day, I love the feel of silk so I think it'll be worth it

I have a satin pillowcase and I definitely find it helpful at reducing knots. Unfortunately, all my hair doesn't stay on my pillow, so I still get nasty sleep tangles in many feet of my length.

I find that satin sheets are great if you can't get your hair to stay on the pillow (though getting them to stay on the bed... is a challenge

Maybe an extra large silk satin (charmeuse) sleep cap might help? Or wrapping your hair with a large silk scarf?

I have a satin pillowcase, but I never really got good results because my head kept slipping off the pillow during the night, resulting in big knots and neck pain. I switched to wrapping my hair in a silk scarf and back to my regular cotton pillowcase, and things have been much better. But I do recommend getting the pillowcases! Silk seems to be a better choice than satin, at least in my experience.

People trying to find a pillowcase or sleep cap that works for them might find it helpful to know the difference between silk and satin... Silk is a fiber, satin is a specific type of weave, so it is still possible to get the benefits of silk, even if satin is too slippery a fabric for you. Also, lots of satins now are actually made out of polyester type fibers. :flower:

I got myself a silk pillowcase, and it was a challenge at first, being used to cotton, but now I love it, and less breakage is always good. :)

Silk with satin weave (a.k.a. charmeuse) is the best for slip. Lots of silks are not as smooth as silk satin, and satin weave can be on polyester and other synthetic fibers (which can cause static by the way), so results won't be the same.
Yes, I recommend silk scarves too. They are very versatile, as you can wrap your hair with them, your pillow or wear them under a hat in winter months.

I tend to end up sleeping in top of my hair, with it on the sheet instead of the pillow, if it's loose or braided. (Can't sleep with an updo and I think my scalp deserves a break.) For me, it's obviously not a great solution, so I'm glad my hubby doesn't laugh too much at my ugly satin sleep caps.

Thanks for the opinions everyone, seems it's worth a try so I'll call about the pillowcases today :)

I do have polyester satin cases already, we actually have 2 whole sets, I have no issues with slipping off them or anything(although my mam once tried satin pjs and satin sheets and that was a bit hilarious)
