softening demarcation line?

Hi all,
I've got my natural hair down to my ears now......but my dyed hair has faded out over summer and the demarcation line is driving me crazy! it's just so straight and obvious I'm thinking of asking my hair dresser to 'soften' the line (by blending it a bit somehow I guess?) so I can then grow it out in peace without it driving me absolutely crazy. Hopefully that'll make it look a bit more deliberate and softer.
Anyway here's a pic from my recent no heat curl experiment (excuse how weird it looks, it's sort of still a bit wet and twisted on the scalp):

I did this on my hair when I started growing out my HOLYCRAPRED- what I did was sort of a reverse ombre effect, in that I took a dye that matched my natural colour, added it only along the demarcation line, and smoothed it down the length gradually to darken the red at the top but keep it at the ends. I could give you a pretty clear walkthorough on how do DIY it, but I'm not sure how a hairdresser would do it, since I was just pootling away at home trying to make life easier. However, I'm sure a good stylist would know what to do for you if you explained what you were trying to achieve =] Hope all goes well, I remember struggling with my demarcation line and it's no fun at all- worth it though!

@ Sylvestix depending on what the hairdresser says I might PM you :) But yes what you're describing is exactly what I want! It's just the dramatic line that's bothering me once it's softened I think I'll be happy enough to just let it grow.

once upon a time many years ago I was also a blond from highlighting. I as well wanted to back to my natural color (medium brown) and have virgin hair, so I proceeded to grow it out. When I made that decision I got lowlights at a salon that matched my natural color (only once!) and then proceeded to grow it out! It definitely made the demarcation line a lot less noticeable.

Thistledown, your hair is gorgeous. I love those curls!
I think your plan is 100% right - go to a professional. Demarcation line is something you'll probably be living with for years, so might as well get it right! I think you can ask for different ombre/balayage/highlights blending in the tones. The hairdresser will have many techniques to do this, so my advice is to ask for minimal bleach/dye involved and also, show the hairdresser a few pictures of the exact ombre effect you want on your hair.
Also, don't forget to go to the hairdresser with sebum-y hair + apply coconut oil a few hours prior to the visit to protect from bleach damage: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10495

Invent some kind of cute or funny story, don't dye it again, and wait. It's not a lot of time. And when it's all together, you'll be SO happy.

@ meteor thanks for the info! I'm going to ask the hairdresser on Tuesday.....I'm hopeful I can get something I can love whilst it grows out instead of hate :)
Also I found this pic of cameron diaz (http://www.pinterest.com/pin/155233518380132531/), her natural root colour is nearly exactly the same as mine! It's taken me ages to find a pic that's so similar.

@ Tini'sNewHair thanks! I keep looking for ways of doing curls, they turned out well but as they were still a bit damp they fell out :( But I'll try again and hopefully fix the weird twisted root thing too...
