Not so long ago, I was looking for storage ideas for hair toys in this thread:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=120614&page=2

I scoured the Internet and came up with this:

and for ficcares, metal and plastic claws, make-up, forks and combs:

The jars and multi-tiered round plexiglass containers came from the Container Store and the blue hat box and chest of drawers I already had from years ago. I am very happy with this setup. I have everything handy and pretty much in plain view and the cats can't get to stuff although now they LOVE walking on the dresser and watching me do stuff...lots of places for them to sit :)

Thank you for this. I love all the ideas, and just have to figure what method works for me and my collection! :D

That's a nice idea I have a dresser that I use for my hair toys so I bought pink food bowls at the local dollar tree. I organized mine into groups. Hair pins in a bowl and so on. I'm still working on mine. I will post pictures on photo bucket when I'm done.

Definitely! I think it starts innocently enough; you buy a few hairtoys and store them in convenient places and then as your collection grows, you realize you can't find anything or forget you have certain toys and so on. I think the more ideas we share, the more members will benefit and will be able to customize their own setups.

I agree toys multiply. I had mine gave to me and now they've over ran my home. I have two inch long claw clips. I bought when I had short hair. I don't think I will keep them. I will give them to someone. The storage ideas I agree are great. We need to help each other.

I use an old, solid wood map drawer chest. It's meant to lay maps flat in.

For sticks, Ficcares, Flexi-8s and similar - I cut tool foam to fit the width, then 12" deep as a base. Then same size sheet with holes for various toys. Then, behind the foam, I have the flat, can be divided tool box insets. New packages of stuff go in those.

For the eighty billion claw clips, I attached closet rod type cups in the lowest two deep drawers, then put dowels in. Toys go over dowels, stay upright and can't crush the teeth.

For dry pins, snap clips, elastics - I put the tool box containers in, each version has their own bin.

I had no shame in adding bits, it was rough to start with. It sits in the kitchen, next to the old printer (as in business not computer) desk. Add a soapstone lab counter on top, it's extra counter space. Plus I screwed in hooks, so it holds dog collars and leashes.

For wet gear - a PVC pipe section sprayed aluminium, mounted to a flange holds elastics. Then a magentized dish about a foot away holds clips and pins. Between those is stainless steel strapping with holes then 4" lower is a mesh "gutter". Drop sticks through a hole, gutter keeps them from falling all the way through.

To identify the drawers, little aluminum tags in the shape of the original tags, then black enamel pen to write what is where. Add some geekery, hold in place, screw on handles to hold tag also.

Yes, we are steampunking this place. Because we can.

MandyBeth,

I am sorry I missed your post here. You seem VERY handy. I only wish :) Would love to see a shot of your setup if that's cool with you.

I just use one of those closet-door hanger shoe-holder thingies. I found one that has clear pockets so I can see what I have stored in each pouch. I group "like items" together (acrylics, glass, wooden, etc). Works well.

The best part is that it's hidden on the inside of my closet door so everything is out of the way and my surface areas are not cluttered.
