Thank you lady una, LauraLongLocks and lapushka!

I try to make sure I explain everything clearly. I also try to take out the bits I manage to mangle my words!

Does anyone else feel they need to do full makeup for filming? I have a HD video camera and I love it but I'm so scared of not looking perfect. It means I don't always film as often as I'd like as I'm so worried about being judged for it. Even though my hair looks fine! I don't think I'd be any good at facing the other way the whole time either as I'd get confused and end up out of frame or talking to myself. It's really difficult not to just keep chatting through the whole thing with random facts and thoughts and tips.

Yes, thank you, Lapushka!

I don't wear makeup at all in most of my videos. I don't care if people judge. So far, I actually got a compliment on how nice my skin is, so I guess sans makeup is the way to go! Knowing how much to talk, to cover what you want to cover, is all part of learning how to do it. Just be yourself, be natural. I think most people like down-to-earth personalities.

Lazy wrap bun and disc bun tutorial.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Laura, Your lazy wrap bun tutorial changed everything for me! I desperately needed help in making my first bun, and making it hold, so you can imagine just how important this was to me! I don't know if I have missed the instruction every time, or if it really has not been mentioned elsewhere, but regardless, moving the thumb outwards on the first full wrap makes such a difference. Before watching your tutorial, my tiny bun would just slide out of my hair almost immediately, despite painfully dragging the hair stick along my skull. With this extra separation formed by the thumb, it can last for half a day, if not longer, and my scalp is much less traumatised. This was just so important to me. :joy:

I posted a new video last week, Its how I currently wear my hair at work so as I can comfortably wear my hard hat. Because I have to wear a hard hat it has to be secure and have as few pins as possible or else they end up digging into my head.
It is quite similar to a video I posted in 2012 but updated since my hair is now knee length.
Hopefully it will be useful for people.

There are quite a few. I like the shell bun myself for pretty but I also like a knot bun. I have both on my channel but if you just input them into YouTube search lots of tutorials will come up. My hair was MBL when I filmed those tutorials. I know that shorter hair usually requires wrapping tighter or you could do a peacock twist.

Unfortunately I'm not teaching anything in this video, though when I do have something to teach i will do.
However, this video is from Saturday, after my hair dried from washing it with eggs and honey (followed by typical routine)- and my hair felt amazing, like never before!! So I wanted to record that, as well as see the effect of brushing on my waves and whether honey had lightened it or not. So yeah, probably a bit of a vain and boring video, but I'm going to use it to endorse honey and eggs!!

Oh my! What gorgeous hair and length! :agape:You had to keep winding and winding and winding! And I love how you had enough to poke the middle through the wrap! Need to take my vits so my just-reached-hip-length hair gets as long as yours is!! Just beautiful! :thudpile:

Oh your comment was perfectly nice :D someone else, apparently i pull to hard! i have to or i can get the ficcare through lol.

Good grief bunzie! Some people can be so critical! I don't see them making any videos! I do think that ahemmm person was trying to be helpful, but, couldn't she have just pm'd you on fb? I have to make my lwb and all buns for that matter really tightly or the hairstick falls out in seconds! Well, always consider the source if someone seems critical or judgmental. Still hurts, but looking at rude comments this way helps me to deal with the offending ahemm person. ya just wanna :slap: them!! LOL!! ;)

Bunzfan - a few of my thoughts...

Everyone prefers compliments to criticism, we can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. You aren't unique in this, so don't let anyone tell you so.

When a person must preface criticism with anything such as, "No offense meant, but..." they should probably just keep it to themselves.

If criticism must be given at all, it should be 1. done in private, 2. given only after praise or compliments of some sort, 3. followed up with a lot more praise.

I admit I don't always remember these things. We are all human, and that's why it is so important to forgive one another. Eventually everyone is in need of forgiveness for something they have done.

I just want you to know I empathized with your feelings when you were given unsolicited advice/criticism by a few people on FB. I think you handled it gracefully and with poise, honestly. I love your videos, and learned a new way to accomplish the LWB! :) Thank you!

ETA: Gossamer - WOW! Just, uh, WOW! :thudpile: If my hair ever makes it to the glory of yours, I will need to refer back to your video to learn a new way of doing the LWB for goddess hair! :)

So I need to make some videos that involve me talking at a camera - and what better way to practice than doing a "hair video" - this is my take on the nautilus bun with thick hair:

Any criticism on video-making technique (which is over exposed) or hair styling technique will be welcome. I have never done this whole "I am going to speak to a camera" before, but I need to learn fast :p

Awww thanks! That is so sweet :-) I actually thought I was quite awkward on camera (although I'm trying to film some videos for an OCD Awareness week, so it isn't the easiest topic to talk about - so I think explaining something as down to earth and easy as a hair-related creation felt much easier to explain by comparison) - so I'm really glad you found it of help!! :D

I mostly do makeup videos but I made a few hair videos when I started my channel! They are tailored more toward the average jane but I will link them -- maybe some LHC-ers could learn a nugget or two from them as well? The first is about coconut oils for leave-in and deep treatments, and the second (in the following post) is just a simple cinnamon bun walk-through with a hair fork. Pardon the video quality as I still had a lot to learn about filming at this time. :)

:)The newest hair tutorial I made is an updated Pretzel Bun with longer hair. This bun can be done with several lengths, you just wrap it around until you run out of hair but have enough to loop through. Ponytail is optional.I created this bun in 2005 and it works great with the 2 claw clips. I don't talk in my videos but there is some text included for clarification.I wear this bun several times a week. I love it!

None of my video's are anything new, in fact two are just a variation on an old video I did in 2011 to illustrate the same style with different pins/clips.
But as I have posted all my others here I feel I should just in case anyone feels like checking them out, so here goes;

http://youtu.be/VFJMw8WAe7U

Hmm, I watched this video today and I have to say as a thin haired gal I found it so insulting.
You said: "I ended up having really thin hair and I would always cut it back because it just was not nice as it grew longer because
there was just hardly any of it."

Umm. Yeah. We need to not call thin hair "not nice" because some of us just have thin hair.

Sorry Lauralonglocks, but that's really insulting to thin haired women like me.
I just have to keep it real and tell you that.

I'm glad your hair is thicker, but you don't need to disparage those of us who have thin hair.
Its just so insulting and not necessary.

Some of us take good care of our hair but by God's will (poor health and or genetics) our hair thins as we get older.

Peace out.

Some of us take good care of our hair but by God's will (poor health and or genetics) our hair thins as we get older.

Peace out.

As my hair became damaged from poor habits, it became much thinner and scragglier looking than it would have been if I had taken better care of it. So, yes, I cut it back because it didn't look its best. Sorry you took offense. I wasn't insulting thin hair in general, or insulting anything at all. I was saying that because my hair was thinned from damage I always felt I needed to cut it back. If you want to take offense, that is your choice, but I in no way meant it as an offense. Take what you want from it. Only a fool is offended when no offense is intended.

Edited to add: I've been told by many that my hair is thin, and that I have no place growing such thin hair out long. I have never thought of my hair as thick, because it's not. I've always thought my hair was thin, but only found out after coming to LHC that my hair is actually average. Whatever. I shouldn't feel the need to defend my video. I was trying to be helpful in teaching people how to avoid damaging their hair with poor handling practices so they can retain their full thickness, whatever that may be. Feel however you want to feel about it, but I take no responsibility for causing your feelings on the matter.

I am not seeing where Laura's video was insulting.
It is actually helpful to know that sometimes breakage and damage makes us feel we have a hair type we do not. I have stayed short all of my life because I thought my hair was scraggly, frizzy and thin. In reality, my hair texture is really nice. While it is fine, I learned it was definitely something I can appreciate. It was just really damaged from over processing.

Sometimes we read a post and feel it is directed at us when really it is about the posters personal experience. No one can post from your point view.
I speak on this as I feel Laura now has been told she is rude, insulting AND disparaging and I have never once seen any indication of that.
I think a person's history of behavior and posting should count for something before we choose to bash them with insults on a public forum...especially when they are kind enough to share their tips and ideas. The leap to over sensitivity and name calling can be just as unnecessary as the comment you felt needed addressed.

I find it hard to believe you could feel comfortable speaking to her that way honestly. I watched it twice to see if she alluded to all thin hair being nasty. Nope, she said HER hair looked bad because there as barely any there from breakage. There is a huge difference in natural thinning hair and hair that is thinned due to damage and breakage. She shared her personal experience and nothing more. If you took from that that YOUR hair is seen as thin and scraggly that is something you have to address within, not project onto others.

I have always thought there is a big difference in "keeping it real" and being outright mean. Something to keep in mind.

Thank you, both. I was going to take down all my YouTube videos before I read this. I really just want to help others with my videos, sharing what I have learned so far through my own experiences. Truly, hair that is naturally thin and hair that is thinned from damage are not the same thing at all. My hair that was thinned from damage was not pretty. I cut it back because it wasn't nice looking without its full thickness.

Annalouise, I sincerely apologize for hurting your feelings with my video and with my comments here. I never meant to hurt anyone's feelings, though I do have a tendency to stand my ground when I feel backed into a corner. I was advised long ago by someone very wise never to take offense, even when offense is intended, because it is foolish. That is where my comment above came from. My mentor said never take offense when it is intended, and especially when it is not intended. I was not intending to actually call anyone here a fool, but I was sharing what my mentor taught me (actually, I was calling myself a fool, now that I think about it). It was late, and I did not take time to review what I had written before I posted my reply. I was upset and feeling defensive.

I apologize to you that I took offense to your comments, because I should have had a more tender, thoughtful response. Obviously, you are distressed about your shedding/thin hair, and I didn't cue into what you were really saying when you posted. I merely took the defensive. I apologize. I can't imagine how upsetting it would be to be losing hair and not be able to figure out the cause. I hope you will accept my sincere apology, and I also hope that you will be able to reverse your hair loss. :blossom:

Edited to add: My mentor was apparently quoting Brigham Young...

“He who takes offense when no offense is intended is a fool, and he who takes offense when offense is intended is a greater fool.”
― Brigham Young

Brigham is right. It's a good life-lesson reminder for me. I tend to be a bit hot tempered.

I must say: I really admire you for this post, LauraLongLocks! :bowtome:
And that's such a great quote, thanks for sharing it! I must really remember this quote in this world of Internet, when it's really easy to be offended/offensive without any intent/cause.

Just de-lurking to say it "out loud": I love your videos! My hair is a similar texture, so your videos help me figure out how to work with it. Straight, slippy hair brings different challenges and benefits from coarser textures. (I've lost hairties from the ends of my braids, and don't even bother with barrettes--they slide out almost immediately.) I've never had hair below my shoulders before, so they help a BUNCH!

Nice video and great updo-from-half-up trick, Ilax!

Love your video, LauraLongLocks! Especially the part about washing hair in "rows" - I know this must be an excellent way of washing hair and reducing tangles, and maybe that's another reason why your shedding dropped so dramatically. :) Congrats on that! :D

I have a question: I really want to wash hair this way, but for the washing hair in the front/hairline, how do you rinse out shampoo when you are done, if you stay in that position, without flipping hair backwards? Is there a way of rinsing that area without a hand-held showerhead?

Is there a way of rinsing that area without a hand-held showerhead? Yes, washing in rows makes a huge difference on the tangling, or lack thereof, I should say. When I first tried to wash my hair in this position I did a few circular motions at my nape and I paid for it with a few tangles. To get the top of head hair rinsed thoroughly, part the hair from nape to forehead and lift your chin slightly. Breathe through your open mouth and keep your eyes shut so you don't end up waterboarding yourself, or with eyes full of soap, ha ha! Back up a little so the shower spray can directly reach that part of your scalp while you hold one or both sides out of the way for the water flow to have direct access.

Preventing tangles is the one thing I want to preach from the mountaintops about long hair care. It is becoming my mantra, lol!

LLL, Enjoy watching your videos. I wash and when I use a BBB use the same method. Yes, the brushing and less shedding part over time is very intriguing.
Maybe it could be due to scalp massage that happens with a BBB? For example, if you start scalp massages (especially if you use a bit of oil), you will usually see quite a bit of shedding, but somehow over time overall shedding tends to fall quite dramatically... Maybe it's because the hair follicles got stronger due to increased blood circulation in that area and getting scalp accustomed and resistant to mechanical manipulation? I've always wondered about it... :hmm:
But at the same time, I can't ignore studies like this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19016066 that showed that "hair loss was reduced by reducing brushing frequency". :hmm: I really don't know...

I've done bbbing after and before bed and just loved the results. It's just that I get lazy... I bbbed along to the vid which was a totally fun experience and now I finally understand. Thanks Laura! I think I'll be washing/measuring it tonight. Then I'll begin the twice a day bbbing. How do you count shed hairs? Just keep hair up and then count hairs pulled out when combing, then pull strands from used bbb?

Although maybe I should stop bbbing for two weeks or something for the sake of science... Hmm...

ETA: meteor, as always I think it's whatever works for your hair type, especially when it comes to using this brush (it is a tool after all!). I hypothesize this would work for me cause me n Laura are twins. (Her camera is great at capturing her lovely hair with its subtle waves. Also I lol'ed at the comments. Great video, it really helped me figure out how to avoid the tangles while using a BBB!!!

(Oh never mind you mentioned in your video, sorry I didn't pay enough attention the first time) Yep, within two weeks my shed rate went from 25-30 hairs down to 10-15. Now it's been a month and I am never over 10 unless it's wash day. Usually under 5. I co-washed this morning and so far today I lost 3 hairs. I haven't brushed yet tonight, but I would be surprised to see more than 5 additional hairs when I do.

I did try massaging with oils, and I did not notice the reduction in shedding. This was several months back. I didn't want to oil up every night though because I didn't want to have to wash every day. So, I wasn't doing it frequently enough. I think anything to increase blood flow to the scalp will help over time, but I personally never noticed anything dramatic like this until using the BBB twice a day.

I get confused, too. So many conflicting opinions regarding brushing properly of course with a good BBB and those who feel less manipulation is best. So I comprimised. On wash day or night before I'll use BBB. I wash once a week. If I get an urge to brush another time, I will and I massage whenever I feel like it. I always start out with some fingercombing and use a wide tooth comb.
I love LLL's video as it shows proper technique for brushing. You can have the best and expensive BBB but if not using proper brushing technique, you'd probably be better never brushing at all. :)

I think that might be where the conflicting information comes from. If people are using the BBB on tangled hair, then yes, they will do a lot of damage. I don't know for sure. Just my theory.

I second/third this! :agree: Any tools (combs, fingers, brushes...) can be misused and thus lead to damage. Technique is extremely important, as well as finding the right kind of tool (spacing, firmness of tines, etc) for your individual hair. :)

If you use ANY kind of brush before detangling properly, your hair will pay the price. That's why proper detangling before using the brush is so important. As I said before, you can use the most expensive creams, shampoos, conditioners on your hair, but it will be for naught if you don't detangle properly. Mechanical damage can be hidden..but over the long run the hair pays the price.

Thank you. I still have more videos I want to produce while on break from school. The list of stuff I want to get done in the next twelve days is staggering.

LLL: Thanks for the BBB vid! I've used mine off and on, and didn't see any difference. Will give your method a try, and see how it goes! (I shed like crazy on wash days, but henna days are make-a-drain-monster days!!)

Suit yourself, Annalouise. I will do my best to avoid being offended in all cases. I'm not going to defend Brigham Young. I know he was probably married to as many as you said, but I have no idea. I think the man was racist, too, and made up a lot of false doctrine. That doesn't mean that he wasn't spot on with that advice. Have a good 2015.

I reckon it was good advice too - and if they'd done a video of 'all 55 of Brigham Young's wives do their hair for their wedding' it would be waaaaaay too long to put on Youtube

I would love to hear how it is for you.

Wow, those are some awesome videos! I finally made another video, tried to slow down my process so the viewer can see, but I now have to wait until I have enough bandwidth to upload it, sorry for the delay!

I understand, when I finally finish a video (which takes me a while :]) I wait until everyone else has logged off or stopped playing online games in the house else it takes forever for the video to load. That's normally why my video's are loaded as such odd times.

Thanks :) I think its more that I only take pictures of the ones that look nice, on a normal day my hairs a bit of a mess.

I am curious to know if there is a way of uploading videos on LHC ? I mean just like we upload pictures, i.e. only visible by LHC members and not just links to public YouTube stuff. Would it be possible to have a specific area of LHC site dedicated to LHCers videos ??

... Well, just out of curiosity !^^

I was also wondering if it would be possible to have a chat-room... sorry if the question has already been arisen somewhere ! :p

Just dropping in to say that I just finished uploading a new hairstyle video on Youtube! This one was at the request of a friend who asked me to do a demo video on one of my favorite hairstyles that I posted on my blog last year. It's called "finger crochet" and I learned it from a braid book by Raychel Potter. Thanks for watching!

I have been posting video's as unlisted and setting them so they can't be embedded on websites and such like, and then sending the links to my family so as they can access them. Apparently when they are unlisted they cannot be found through searches or by looking on your profile and can only be accessed by yourself or by people with the correct link. Of course if the video's I posted like this did become public it would not be the end of the world but they are things I would rather not have the world see. So far I have only had the number of views I expected to from the number of people I have given the link too and so I think it works. I don't know if this would work for LHC as the forums are public but it would limit the viewers to people who had seen the forum post and followed the correct link or the links could be posted in picture form where only members can view them. Don't know if that is of any help to you Mimha, as someone who posts video's but always keeps my face out of them I understand where your coming from.

No, it's a good size for the length you have. Remember the hair you're basing this off of is floor length. Gosh, who can compete with that?

Your hair is lovely - but even lovelier in the video as you can see it in action. :)
I am going to try and see if my hair is long enough to make twin helix buns...

ETA: the answer is... not really/quite :(
