View Full Version : Looking for Hair Toy Storage Ideas...

I have been eyeing all kinds of containers to store hair toys. For some reason, the small plastic chest of drawers that used to be all over the place are pretty scarce nowadays and have been replaced with acrylic ones, which cost an arm and a leg. My main problem is storing hair sticks. I'd like to keep them in something fairly transparent and sealed to ward off dust, and also to keep them safe from the kitties. Recently, I have discovered these jars from IKEA:

The jars are 8" tall x 7" diameter, but I am definitely in search of something better. Any ideas? Pictorial examples are even better and much appreciated :)

How about a large, rectangular food container? They come with lids and can be found at Target. You also might check out Dollar Tree or Even Walgreen's or Walmart.

How about something like this?

[URL="http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10036769&N=&Ntt=mason+jars"] (http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10036769&N=&Ntt=mason+jars)

You can get them quite cheaply from places like Target or Hobby Lobby.

I have a bunch of them for storing cotton wool and lip balms etc, you can get quite tall ones for spaghetti etc that might work well with some longer hair toys

I made a few of these lids that go on a jar, with wire mesh, so my sticks and forks will stand up. They look like this (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/flower-frog-lid) or this (https://www.etsy.com/listing/51409206/5-mason-jar-flower-frog-lids-mason-jar).

Worked out really great, as I had the jars and the wire hanging around... It shows them off nicely and the wire keeps the toppers from banging together.

another thread had this suggestion: NEW, Retro Classic Diner-Style Drinking Straw Dispenser, Clear Transparent Jar, Thick Plastic, Steel Dispenser... (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_6?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=straw+dispenser&sprefix=straw+%2Caps%2C336)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41tkaHd-nwL.jpg

ETA: this (http://www.amazon.com/Prodyne-F-36-Acrylic-Dispenser-Straws/dp/B000E7XMKY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393769655&sr=8-3&keywords=straw+dispenser) one is cheaper. A reviewer says 9" straws barely fit and the 8" ones are preferred/easier. Not sure how long your long sticks are.
ETA2: I want to have a travel case (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=17940&page=3&p=412881&viewfull=1#post412881) like this person. Its a pencil case.

I sewed my own, it hangs on the wall in my bathroom. The toys don't bang together, stay clean and safe. No, I didn't sew with great care so you can tell it's home made. I just wanted something that worked, fast! Comes with a little golden retriever hair though.

My claw clips and flexi8s as well as part of my make-up is in these clear drawer bins, like these (it's nice and keeps everything dust-free):

I have some hairtoys in a 3 drawer box similar to those, maybe a bit smaller, which I got like 10 years ago, but those things last forever. I love it, but sadly, I can't find them so easily where I live anymore. I have definitely outgrown the drawer box so I was looking for something similar to expand into and then something specific for hair sticks.

I like the pasta jars for the sticks and I read somewhere someone had partially filled hers with rice at the bottom to protect the tips, which is a great idea. It's a work in progress. Once I get everything organized, I'll post a pic :)

I just keep mine in a pencil cup, you're right though something sealed would be good for dust & cat hair. I just wanted to add that my sister got me one of these for traveling
http://www.amazon.com/Clover-Getaway-Single-Point-13-Inch/dp/B000WV1Y3Y/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1393817744&sr=8-5&keywords=knitting+needle+case

so perhaps there are other storage options for knitting / crochet needles that would work at home? It my be worth a look through a craft store I know the case listed above has worked great for road trips so far.
