View Full Version : My ends aren't split, but they are dry and prone to tangling. Will this help?

I put coconut oil on the length and I plan on leaving it that way for a few days before I wash it. Is that a good idea? Will that help? I want to minimize tangling.

it will moisturize the strands, but you could need a little trim, or a clarify. My ends get like that when I have build up.

I'm not convinced. I left coconut oil on my hair for 3 or 4 days last week (was procrastinating about washing it), it made is softer but not very much less tangly. Just done a decent amount of S&D, that on the other hand has really helped. But you may not have the same white dot problem that I do.

It's probably one of those things you'll just have to see if it works for you. I oil my hair regularly (it's oiled now) and it cuts down on the fussiness dramatically. My hair's texture tends to get pretty resistant to combing so coconut oil really helps limit that issue for me.

I have been using Mane N Tail products including their hair strengthener, maybe it was too much? I just don't want to use the clarifying packets if it is just dry and not built up. I used them like two weeks ago. And I used my clarifying shampoo with the last wash but it is by Suave so I don't know how good it is?

Yes that could be the culprit. Too much strengthening products and not much moisturization. I dont think there is any harm in trying the coconut oil. And maybe cut back a bit on protein treatments, i see you have M/C hairs and they are healthy so i dont think there is much need for strengthening products

Moisture! M&T is stupidly high in protein. Wear an SMT overnight at least twice in my case, you've got to use moisture after protein I've found in my daughters. I'm really protein sensitive for most types and it takes wearing an SMT for 48 hours, then nightly for a week to get anywhere.

I'd toss the M&P, try Neutrogena's clarifying shampoo, then worship moisture. If that doesn't fix the problem, I'd use the clarifying product or the powdered one (pink foil packet) from Sally's, then moisture obsession. If still not fixed, time to dust the ends. I've then don't two weeks of moisture, then dust as needed, repeat until ends behave.

What is SMT? And what is M&P?

What is SMT? And what is M&P?

Smt is protein and cone free conditioner mixed with honey and aloe vera gel ( or juice)
it brings a lot of moisture to hair. The are great to do after a clarifying wash in my opinion. Also great after protein treatments.
MP was a typo for mane and tail I think.

Too on much protein can mimic the need to clarify. I would start alternating the mane and tail with moisture based products to get some balance. I find I get great results from SMT after only 30minutes so you could start with that for ease.

Add some more moisture to your routine and see if that help. If not it could be simply time for a little trim. Lots if things could be happening but this is at least a start. There are cones in your routine so clarifying would just help the SMT penetrate better.

To answer original question. Yes coconut oil may help. I would try it after the clarifying and SMT. That way it can penetrate better without cones blocking some absorption. After that sure .. A pre poo treatment with coconut should help even with routine. I find it actually works even better mixed with a little avocado oil (or olive if you don't have avocado) Makes hair very soft.

Good luck. Hope it works for you. :)

By the way, your hair is beautiful so obviously you are doing something right. Trust yourself, listen to your hair. Keep eye on protein/moisture balance and microtrim as needed. It will keep ends fresh and still allow you to keep growing.
You have a great head of hair to work with! It will all be just fine :)

I actually alternate the Mane N Tail with Tresemme naturals, which is cone free.. I don't know if it is protein free however.

Thank you, that does make me feel better. I actually joined the "no trim for 2014" I want fairy tale ends, just not split ones. I S&D a few times a week. So normally, it is really soft and not to tangly.

I agree most things are trial and error. I oil with a coconut oil blend I make myself and I do this every other day. The days I do this my hair is happier. I use my oil in my mister it's water diluted. Then I follow up with a leave in. You might try my method.

The SMT is usually applied warm by way of microwave and left on the hair for a good amount of time (think at least a few hours-overnight) with a showercap. You can even use a heating cap if you got one handy. Simply using the Tresemme Naturals, which is excellent btw, and washing it out after a few minutes, may not be quite as effective in counteracting the protein overload of the Mane n Tail.

If you try an SMT, don't use the Mane and Tail in it.

This is true protein and cone free.

Okay, so a few questions, is Tresemme naturals protein free? I have honey and 100% aloe vera gel, but how much of what do I mix? And if Tresemme is not protein free, what can I buy that is both protein and cone free? Something I don't have to order online would be helpful.

It is protein free its a moisture conditioner if you look at this thread it tells you what ratio's basically 1 parts aloe and honey to 4 parts conditioner (heated)

Is it okay to do this over the coconut oil I already have in there? Or should I wash that out first?

For me best all time SMT mix is with biolage conditioning balm or the GVP knockoff at Sally's.
If those aren't available near you anything like VO5 could work. Or shea moisture conditioners may have what you are looking for. I will google your conditioner ingredients real quick and check back.

I ended up going to Sallys and getting a shampoo and conditioner with Moroccan and argan oil. She said that was the most moisturizing. I also was at Jewel and bought Pantene deep clean. I am sure that this will be better than Suave, and if all else fails, I will use the packets.
