View Full Version : How to achieve heat-free curls similar to a curling wand?

Hello everyone!

So, I had the hairdresser use a heated styling wand on my hair when I had it cut last, and I LOVED the results. However, I don't want to use heat on it to get the same results.

The results are what are shown in my avatar.

Can anyone tell me how to get similar results from something that is heat free? I've tried the headband curls but they always leave a huge mark on my forehead which isn't attractive and hurts my head!

I don't have much money to spend...any suggestions welcome!

I think buying the biggest velcro rollers you can find (especially velcro rollers come in big sizes) is key, then roll while your hair is 80%-90% dry, or spritz your dry hair with a spritz bottle. Let it fully dry, then tadaa. I think. :)

I use curlformers or flexi-rods... but for curls that big you can use literally anything.

Thanks Lapushka! Aren't velcro rollers damaging for hair? It sounds like a good plan if they aren't! :D

Curlformers, Flexirods, pin curls, velcro rollers, bun waves, headband curls, etc. If you spritz your hair with water and then sleep on it, you can usually wake up with nice waves and/or curls.

I haven't heard of them before (or I forgot!), what are they? Are they expensive?

My bun waves always end up frizzy and a velcro-ey mess. Headband curls hurt my forehead! Pin curls never work for me, either.

The other two I'm not sure on how to use but I'll look it up.

Well, if you don't do it too often, IMMHO it won't hurt. But the rollers do have velcrood parts and that may not be the best for the hair. I just don't know of any rollers that come in these big sizes:

Yes they are expensive. There is a girl on youtube that uses all types of household things to curl her hair. Try some of those ideas. If you can wrap your hair around it, it can curl it.

Wowza, they ARE huge! Yeah, I wouldn't be bothered all the time. I just know I have DBFs birthday coming up and it'd be nice to do something different!

Okay, then they're probably out! Have you got a link to the YouTube channel or video? :flower:

no heat foil curls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_hAhXNdYhY)

Also look into sock curls, 'cocoon' curls, rag curls, paper bag curls, t shirt curls... people literally use anything!

Thanks :)

I watched it but the curls are too tight for what I'm after but looking at the rest of her videos I'm sure there'll be one that is suitable!

Oh yea, I should also mention bun curls.. really to change the size of the curl change the size of whatever you use. I can use as little as 3 fat flexi rods at the top of my head to get the type of curl you want.

Wow, that sounds great!
I just watched another of her videos where she uses dish sponges to get bigger curls, looks like what I'm after!

Try using rags to curl your hair when wet. Or bun waves?
I did see a video on youtube where the girl was making them with bananas! It's worth a try I suppose (and I can't imagine it would be hard to find)

I couldn't find a better video of the concept at the moment (disregard her teasing her hair/hairspray and all the stuff at the end), but I use this one all the time and I absolutely love the way it comes out. I clip it up on my head like that, but I have also seen it where people do the twist but tie it under their chin with a hair elastic for the same effect.

Another vote for flexi rods, I love mine. I got mine from ebay, they cost me like £2 or something for a pack and for big loose curls 1 pack of the biggest size is probably all you'd need :)

I was going to suggest really loose pin curls, but the banana method sounds much funnier!

Baby wipes!
This is what I use to get curls in my hair. They last all day and I have terribly straight hair that usually would lose a curl in an hour or two!
And baby wipes are cheap! You can buy 80 packs at dollar stores! Woohoo!

pincurls! they are super cheap (you only pay for bobby pins or special clips) and the results are fantastic! you can control how you want then to look, how tight or loose. You only need to get the hang of it but it's definitely worth it. it's my go-to curling method nowadays. instead of a sleep braid I would do a few pin curls and have curls the next day.

For rollers I'd suggest something around a 2 inch diameter, anything super jumbo will just have a straightening effect.

That's the tin foil one, right? I've seen that but it is too small a curl.
Thank you anyways!

How about www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7bjCSteybc for rag curls? They look really professional (oh, and if you don't want your curls too tight, use a wider strip of material) :)

Why not buy some sponge rollers? They have all kinds of sizes and you can get them at the dollar store.

Velcro rollers DO work. They were my go to when I first stopped using heat tools. I over used them but certainly once in a while should be ok. Use just how Lapushka explained! Although honestly, if your only doing it once a month, just go for the curling wand! Once a month shouldn't do anymore harm than velcro rollers especially if your careful. And IMO the wand is probably the least damaging styling tool out there.

Those roll up and snap shut bun former things make lovely waves, they look like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/WMA-Sponge-Styling-Donut-Former/dp/B00870PR5I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392392608&sr=8-1&keywords=bun+former

I love my flexi rods/bendy rollers! I love the one inch and the 1 1/4 inch size.

Here are my curls using flexi rods.

If you like the look of styles created with velcro rollers, just get some and cover them with satin - that's what I did with mine, I bought some cheap satin ribbon the same width as the rollers, wrapped it around the roller and then sewed it in place with a few large, quick hand stitches :)

I've slept in 3 Velcro rollers--only on the tippy-top of my head, so I don't lay on them. My current (Feb) siggy is from those, I think. I fingercombed my hair with wet hands to barely dampen it, used 1" rollers anchored with bobby pins, and tied a big scarf over the whole shebang. Next morning, fingercomb, and you're done! :)
You'll probably have to mess around with roller size and the dampness of your hair, but you'll find something that works!

Maybe green or beige strawllers? I've used the pink ones and they work really well.
