View Full Version : Want to go "Bronde"

Hi all :)

I've been growing my hair for about three years now. Before I even found LHC I had not lightened/highlighted my hair in many, many, many years (at least 17+ yrs or so.. I just went dark one day and never went blonde again) and since joining I haven't darkened it (demi dye) for at least a year+ now (not sure exactly how long but well over a year+) No reason really, I just stopped..

But now my hair is starting to drive me nuts. It's just boring! And I'm getting so tired of it.
I love the Ombre light-ish "bronde" color! A mix of brown and blonde..( my sis in law has it now) and I .WANT. IT

But my dilemma in deciding is.. My natural hair carries a lot of red! My hair itself doesn't look all that red (at least to me) BUT it has a lot of red undertones. You can really see them when I'm in the sun, and if I remember correctly red is a biotch to get out. shudder: So I'm afraid that in trying to get a "bronde" color, it may be too damaging to get red out.

Does anyone have experience with getting natural red toned hair to go blonde/bronde without killing/frying it completely ( I would be going to my stylist I wouldn't be doing it at home)

These are similar to the colors I'm considering..

My hair color looks darker red in my siggy pic ... I guess because of the camera phone and being inside .. I have this pic.. It was taken about a year ago.. standing in the natural sunlight by my backdoor (no flash..and don't mind the air dryed frizz look..I didn't put any product in for the picture lol )..

The length appears darker than the top here, but since then it has lightened some and pretty much evened out with the rest (at least it looks it to me lol)

Do you think I can achieve this color without killing my hair?

I wouldn't mind losing a few inches if the ends needed it after...

Thanks all..and all opinions and advice are welcomed and appreciated :)

I know nothing about color. My hair is very dark blonde and pulls red as well. I would recommend going to a stylist. Don't try this at home. I used to when I was a teen, and my hair turned out a brassy color. Big no-no! Especially on the darker ends, you need a specialist for that. They might even have to cut it all the way to virgin color, if they know zip about coloring.

I think you should do what you feel is best, I'm sorry... I'm no help either.

Your natural hair is lovely, though. :flower: It would be such a shame...

Oh I definitely wouldn't be trying to do it myself LOL

I learned that the hard way in high school that at home hair dye/bleach (for me) equals DISASTER!!

I would go to my stylist.. she's great with color ( she does my SIL's hair) but my red is so stubborn it has me worried..

It would probably be smart to go to a stylist. However, first, you could try doing some mild bleach washes on the dark ends just to get it to a lighter base shade before going to the stylist. Just mix some bleach with shampoo, (make sure your hair is coated with coconut oil to avoid drying) and wash your hair with it, and leave that in anywhere from 15-40 minutes. This is what I did to get bright fire engine red hair dye out of my hair(followed by a good toner of course.
, since my hair turned ginger.) hope this was helpful C:

I think your natural color is beautiful. Your hair is so pretty I would hate to see color damage...your hair looks like bunny fur in the length photo. I would hate for you to lose that.

That being said i understand the urge to color. I think a good colorist could easily get you to bronde without red tones. There would be bleach and toner involved I imagine.
My hair pulls very very red/orange but I have been taken to this bronde color many times in the past. I have dark dark brown hair naturally. Almost black. My stylists usually used neutral tones then toned, a few times they went ash but that was not my preference. I pull green as easily as red for some reason. Hair is tricky.

It is going to take some very harsh chemicals to get those ends bleached out. It may not even work at all. You need to have a strand test first.

Blonde means chemicals and it means a lot of damage, i have blonde highlights and the highlighted strands are really really weak and breaks like nothing, and my hair is pretty thick!
If you want that color you have to know you will have to be really really gentle with your hair and moisturize it a lot more often, if you can handle this and if you have enough patience just do it! But think well before or you could regret it (as i did!) and you'll have to wait so much to take all the damage off. I'm sure it will look lovely on you!

Try a *peroxide free* colour remover such as Color Oops or Colour B4 Extra on the lengths, it may lift a shade or two. After that you can lighten: experiment on shed plughole hair ather than using your whole head as a laboratory. Then the worst that can happen is you waste a few dollars/ pounds.

Hydrolysed wheat or soy protein can reduce peroxide/ persulphate bleach damage, coconut oil may also do so.

Epson salts will remove some of the color on the ends. I would try to mix some with oil and put on the ends. You an clip a shower cap like a snood to let it soak in for a while before washing it out. It is worth a try.

I've got a better deal for ya! We can trade natural hair colors! I've got hair between blond and brown. Slightly more on the blond side. And you have darker hair which is what I've always wanted. Of course I still have some red tones. And my hair is very matte. But you would be closer to the color you want!
