Did this look like a good vortex bun?

I decided to try and make my own vortex bun; I braided it though instead of rope braiding because I haven't learned that yet, and the big bow is to hide the scrunchie I had sticking out.. lol.

It's hard to see for sure in the picture, but I think it looks good. Also, I don't think you need to know how to rope braid to do a vortex bun.

Looks good to me! I love the bow idea! I should try that! I'm always so concerned with making sure the sections lay perfectly and don't go under another that the ponytail band is always obnoxiously visible, unless I finagle a piece of hair over it with a bobby pin and it usally either a) looks weird or b) stabs my scalp. :p

And, the original vortex bun is by CinnamonCurls on youtube, no rope braiding involved :) Torrin's video on it used rope braids, so that might be where you got that from.
