View Full Version : protecting the hair from the sun?

Hi

Well it's still a long time until summer, but I'm asking now anyway.

In summer I normally wear a shawl around my hair, that protects my hair some but my ends are really sun bleached.

How do you best protect your hair from the sun and what do you do to protect it?

I use a spray with UV protector in it.

A UV bun with a buff covering it all up?

I usually bun my hair, so only the hair from roots to nape is exposed to the sun, while the more fragile ends are safely tucked in the bun...
I should think of a way to protect it better though, maybe get my hands on a cute summer hat or learn to tie scarves in some original way before it starts heating up again?

Maybe something I can help with, I do alot of shawls/scarves hairstyles. When I was Young I actually only wore Shawls/scarves

I wear a sun hat if I am going to be in the sun very long, mostly I try to have only 5 or ten minutes in the sun per day as I have fair skin and burn easily.

Bun/updo + a cute summer hat, that's my plan for Summer 2014 :D

I'm a rebel child I don't use a UVA or UVB product, I just style as normal. I didn't know UVA or UVB was that bad to hair.

Wear an updo that's comfortable. Cover with a WHITE cotton scarf or straw hat.

Is there a reason for White? (I have like 10 in OD green that I normally use here on the homestead)

I think probably white would deflect the heat more than other colours and stop your hair heating up so much.

I was just thinking that White don't protect so good from UV light, I don't remember but I Think red was best at protecting from UV light. But maybe the heat makes mor damage than the UV light?

That's awesome :D I have some thin summer scarves, but never could figure out how to wear them and make them look cute / nice...
If you could post some pics with an explanation / tutorial that would be so great :)

I normally use a long or big scarves but some might be able to do with smaller ones, I'll figure out how I can take picutes of them.

I found a tutorial on youtube with 12 scarves styles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk4dgs93biE in the same one, But I dont know how most of them would work with long hair.
But maby you'll find something. #1 was super popular in Sweden some years ago (you can also make it so it covers all your hair, I like that), I have made #7 lots of times and you can twist your braid around your head to. I have also done #10 sometimes.

Exactly, Sarahlabyrinth!

Mr. Michael explains the need for white:

"The first rule for magnificent, thick, beautifully flowing hair during the summer is to cover it...with something white. It's no accident that sailors have worn white hats for thousands of years. White is the only color that deflects the ultraviolet rays of the sun---devastating for both hair and skin. But a white hat or scarf also makes you feel cooler, since the hot sun bounces off it, as opposed to dark colors, which absorb the heat. Why do you think Queen Elizabeth's guards have been known to faint during the summer? Think of their hairy black hats. But in spite of the tropical climate, Jamaican guards don't faint because, sensibly, they are wearing white hats."

I'm thinking maybe shampoos and conditioners for color saving might have UV properties in them. But IDK that something you rinse out is going to have much effect.

I wear a sun bonnet, like Little House on the Prairie. They fit over my updos and shade my face as well. It may look funny, but I don't care :)

UVB radiation is responsible for hair protein loss and UVA radiation is responsible for color changes. The best solution is a compact updo + hat/scarf. And I like keeping hair lightly oiled to prevent too much water evaporation in hot summer.

I don't really recommend UV protectant conditioners, leave-ins, sprays, etc as much as hats/scarves. Products aren't that protective for 2 reasons:
- Common ingredients like Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate and Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane / Methoxydibenzoyl Methane target skin, not hair. As far as I know, they don't completely protect from damage but may help a bit with photo-oxidation resulting in discoloration and fading of artificial dye in hair.
- hair surface is very very large, so if you actually manage to coat all your canopy hair with a UV protection product, it will take a very long time distributing and reapplying and the hair will probably no longer look presentable.

I have UV protection in some of my products but I can never rely on them for sun protection.
The whole science of photoprotection of hair is currently in its infancy, so hats/scarves all the way! But I don't stress it unless I'm in the sun for a very long time.

Have you seen the Wrapunzel (http://wrapunzel.wordpress.com/)site? Andrea always has great tutorials, and tons of inspiration! Granted most of her styles are of the more voluminous variety, but they're easily toned down.

Thank you for the links tlover and sisi33 :D
Now I'll have to try them out and practice so that by the time I actually need it I can make a nice style without issues :)

When I know it's going to be a long day in the sun, I put my hair up and cover with a pretty bandana. I do this when playing sports as well. Has worked so far!

I'm a brimmed hat wearer. After DH had a run-in with basal cell carcinoma, we've been making concerted efforts to keep the sun of our heads. Besides, I burn right through my hair to my scalp!

I do yard work in the early morning or late evening, when the sun is low in the sky.

wouldn't White silk work too? (if you want to look extra fancy)

I don't have a White scarf but the green one (in different tones) is 100% silk

I've been looking at the UV Buffs, I'm gonna get one when I have the extra money. The video at their website shows so much versatility, I could do one, with a sun visor and give my sun bonnet a rest :)
