Hi all! I've been reading everything I can for the last few days, and am glad to have my account activated so that I can join in the discussion!
A little about myself: I'm 45 and live in the mountains of Southern California. I'm a brunette (practically black hair with natural reddish highlights and plenty of silvers). My hair is semi-long, about the bottom of my shoulder blades (is that BSL? and is there a list of acronyms somewhere that I haven't found, yet?). I've been cutting it myself for the last 26 years after a nightmare salon visit prior to my wedding (an omen, perhaps?). I think I'm sort of a U hemline and maybe 1C/M/ii (if I'm understanding the descriptors correctly). I will try to take measurements and a picture, then maybe some of you with more experience can tell give me a hand in figuring it all out.
I'm here because I would like to try and get my hair healthy. While I don't color or perm, I have been washing, blow drying and using a curling iron every day for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, my hair was very thick and strong… not so much any more. Not only are the strands thinner, but I seem to have much less hair. I shed a crazy amount, as well as suffer lots of breakage. I would like to change that, and see if I can add some length along the way.
I'm going to start by trying to wash every other day, and avoiding heat styling as much as possible (these are going to be incredibly difficult habits to break!). This is my first day, so last night I brushed, spritzed with water, and did my best with a sock bun for for some curl (had to YouTube to find out how). I was a tomboy growing up, so braiding, up-do's, and hair toys are way beyond my level of experience. Hopefully I can learn from some of you :)
