Hi all! I've been reading everything I can for the last few days, and am glad to have my account activated so that I can join in the discussion!

A little about myself: I'm 45 and live in the mountains of Southern California. I'm a brunette (practically black hair with natural reddish highlights and plenty of silvers). My hair is semi-long, about the bottom of my shoulder blades (is that BSL? and is there a list of acronyms somewhere that I haven't found, yet?). I've been cutting it myself for the last 26 years after a nightmare salon visit prior to my wedding (an omen, perhaps?). I think I'm sort of a U hemline and maybe 1C/M/ii (if I'm understanding the descriptors correctly). I will try to take measurements and a picture, then maybe some of you with more experience can tell give me a hand in figuring it all out.

I'm here because I would like to try and get my hair healthy. While I don't color or perm, I have been washing, blow drying and using a curling iron every day for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, my hair was very thick and strong… not so much any more. Not only are the strands thinner, but I seem to have much less hair. I shed a crazy amount, as well as suffer lots of breakage. I would like to change that, and see if I can add some length along the way.

I'm going to start by trying to wash every other day, and avoiding heat styling as much as possible (these are going to be incredibly difficult habits to break!). This is my first day, so last night I brushed, spritzed with water, and did my best with a sock bun for for some curl (had to YouTube to find out how). I was a tomboy growing up, so braiding, up-do's, and hair toys are way beyond my level of experience. Hopefully I can learn from some of you :)

I did see that page, Madora, but the first half just looked like your basic forum stuff so I didn't read all the way through to the specific LHC abbreviations. So thank you for making me take another look!

Also, I took a picture this morning after washing last night and putting it in a sock bun (after air drying) for the night. I can't put it in my profile yet, so I will try to post here. I have not used any heat on my hair all week! So proud of myself :D

Staying away from heat is a very good idea, Errant. Good for you!

Sorry, couldn't see the pic.

Sorry about that! Is this any better?

I put it in with the [IMG] tags, instead of using the insert image button this time.

Sorry, no pic. Did you upload your pic to a photo sharing site like Photobucket, then download it from there? Sometimes that is the problem.

What I mean to say is that you need to upload to a photo sharing site. After you have done so, then you can copy it from that site to LHC.

Here's a link to inserting pics (scroll down a bit):

That's the first set of instructions I followed (or tried to follow LOL). I'll try again using postimage.org as detailed in this thread: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=98776 Crossing my fingers!

Whew, it worked! And that picture makes my hair look longer than it is because of the way I was standing to get the picture in the mirror.

Now I see it! Lots of lovely large waves! Your hair looks silvery blonde..or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

It's your eyes, and the light over the mirror ;) My hair is dark, nearly black brown, with reddish highlights and plenty of silver. It almost looks pretty in the picture, but I hate the weird mix of colors (not enough to dye it, tho).

Does this show the color any better?

I can see the silver more clearly.

I sprayed it silver once for a costume. I think it would be lovely if it would come in all at once like this:
