I'm new on the fair trade band wagon but I'm looking for hair products (shampoos and conditioners) that are produced without slave labor and questionable ethical practices. Trying to find out whether sugar, coffee, and tea were "safe" was bad enough. :(

I currently use Ology (walgreens brand) and Suave products which I think is Unilever. Not sure. I really couldn't find anything out about either and I'd rather play it safe than unwittingly pay for something produced in a way I disagree with. Do any of you have experience with free trade products? Makes me just want to switch to Dr. Bronner's and coconut oil for my hair, however, I don't think my scalp and length would like that. Any helpful tips about free trade in general whether hair product related or not would be appreciated! :p Thanks!

These are cruelty free! The lady that makes them is vegan and won't use animal products:

Her pumpkin crunch cake scent is heaven!

I wash with Dr. Bronner liquid soap and use an herbal rinse I make instead of conditioner. Cruelty-free and free of unnecessary chemicals.

I also wash with Dr Bronners, condition sometimes with Lush Jungle (who don't even buy from people who test on animals), sometimes with VO5 (dunno about their stance on cruelty-free practices), and vinegar rinse.

She has goat's milk conditioners though?

She has goat's milk conditioners though?

Ya, she buys the goats milk from a free range, grass fed, happy goat farm. :)

Cruelty free is very important to me, too! I would like to be more conscious of the way products are produced. I know that Unilver is required by law to test on animals for trade with China, so I won't use any of their products. There are lots of sites on the internet with information about cruelty free products, PETA for one, Happy Bunny being another that I frequent. It seems that product lines that are natural and cruelty free are also usually fair trade as well.

If you were in the UK, I would recommend the Naked range from Boots. Their shampoos and conditioners have not been tested on animals, and are cone and sulphate free.

Alaffia is another fair trade brand. I've seen their Everyday Shea and Everyday Coconut lines at Whole Foods.

Cruelty free is incredibly important to me, so here's the list of things I use.

http://www.vitacost.com/giovanni-magnetic-restruxturing-conditioner-8-5-fl-oz - this is my first conditioner I use on my length while shampooing my scalp
http://www.live-clean.com/products/apple%20cider%20vinegar%20-%20clarifying%20shampoo%20and%20finishing%20rinse# .Uufbu9Io7ak - I have scalop issues, so I use this and I add a few drops of peppermint essential oil into it each time I use it
http://shop.karensbodybeautiful.com/product-p/1005.htm - this is the best conditioner EVER
http://shop.karensbodybeautiful.com/product-p/1010.htm - they also make the best leave-in ever, too. :D
https://www.etsy.com/listing/124228034/panaceas-hair-salve-summer-blend-leave?ref=shop_home_active_5 - this on my ends and problem areas keeps me almost entirely split end free!

I think it's unfair to use products tested on animals for beauty. I actually think it's not right to use them for anything at all, but beauty and clothes is at the top of my "what the heck?!" list, because it isn't even remotely necessary for our survival. Torturing animals just so my hair looks shiny and bouncy? No way.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I have lots of research to do now. :p

saskia, I know, right? I'd be questioning what the heck I was putting on myself if it needed animal testing beforehand to verify if it was safe for people.
