...but not back and forth.
Whipping is commonly used to finish the ends of ropes, and this is a slightly altered version of whipping that I like to do to the ends of braids. I like doing accent braids and I hate those tiny clear bands, so I whip my hair.
You can use this method for little braids/ponys as well as larger ones, though using it like a normal ponytail holder up next to the scalp is kinda tough and doesn't hold to well.
Hemp is toothy enough to stay in my hair on it's own just fine and I think it looks nice. You'll need a short length of hemp, maybe 6", though this length varies based on braid width, and desired whipping length. You can get hemp dyed in all different colors, but I like natural best.
Step 1: Make a braid.

Step 2: Make a bight in the hemp. The smaller tail should be short, it only needs to be slightly longer that the completed whipping. Place the bight against your braid.

Step 3: Wrap the long tail around the braid, wrapping upwards towards the bight.

Step 4: Keep wrapping till you have only a tiny bit left.

Step 5: Poke the remainder of the tail through the bight.

Step 6: Pull on the end, what was originally the short tail.

Step 7: Finishing. You can leave the end as is and tuck it into the tassel of your braid, as seen here. If you have enough tail hanging out of the top of the whipping, you can tie the two together, even in a small bow. If you'd like, and you're very careful, you can snip the tails.

To take it out you just pull it off like a ponytail, then you can untie the whipping and use the piece again.
