Here's an idea for a thread: hairstyle fails. We've all had them, right? Wonky braids. Layers that cannot be contained. I think photos of them would be amusing, and help us realize we're not alone. After all, creations like these precede all the perfect braids and buns so ubiquitous on the LHC!

To start, may I present this exploding cinnabun. It fails to protect my ends, and almost completely obscures my lovely new fork in the process! Excellent.

That's how even my best cinnabuns look... Can't seem to suceed with them! :/

I have looooads of hairstyle fails, but I don't think I have any pictures.. I will check! :)

haha, wish i took some pictures of my attempt to do a sock bun - it NEVER works and it looks like 10 cats played in it. ALSO lets not forget my epic fail at a crown braid, ahhhhhh DESASTER!!! :run:

If I had one of those newfangled camera phones that upload photos for you, I would SO join this thread! As it is, it's too much bother for me to get a photo onto my computer to waste effort of failed updos... :(

...now, if SIL does happen to be around when I have a fail bun/ braid day, be assured that I will participate! Great thread idea!

How about a terribly deformed french 4-strand braid? I think that's one of the ugliest braids I've ever made..

True it is a bit deformed, but it still shows off your amazingly thick and shiny hair!

I have so many fails it is insane, esp. given that I'm currently learning how to french/dutch braid (Why can I do a dutch, lace braid as an accent braid at the front but I epic fail french/dutch pigtails!? Why I ask you, why!?) Sadly no pics from me as when my hairstyles go wrong I tend to quickly destroy the evidence!

I've come to the conclusion that the best plan of action is generally to pretend that the bun was supposed to be all explodey, and so call the exploding bun a success.

Same here. I got the donut thing stuck in my hair the last time I tried a sock bun. It took at least 15 minutes to get it out of my hair and into the trash. My crown braids are pretty sad-looking too, which makes ME sad because I love crown braids!

I actually take photos of all my fails, because I don't have a hand-held mirror to see the back of my head. They promptly get deleted.

Oh this is a great idea for a thread :D I didn't manage to get a photo, but this Monday I frenchbraided my hair for a gymnastics practise. A couple of handstands later ALL my whispies and short pieces of layers had escaped and stood straight out around my head as if it was totally static and looked so ridiculous.

This is my thought too. I actually only have done messy buns, but now after seeing all the great hair styles on here, I want to get some toys and give some nicer styles a try too! Now for a little extra money to head my way, and I will be all set.

not to overpopulate this thread with my fails, but...

this afternoon i threw my hair up into a quick bun, standing in front of the mirror it looked fine. So i went outside and removed the garbage cans from the curb, eyed cars driving by and wondered just how fast they were going, talked to the neighbor briefly, wandered around the front yard picking up downed sticks, talked to a random couple interested in the rental house next door, got the mail...when i went back inside i offhandedly glanced in the living room mirror and that's when i noticed this:

Love this idea for a thread! I don't think I have any pictures of fails though. My current go to buns are the LWB and the nautilus. I learned them back when I first joined and I just do them without even checking in the mirror. They used to look good. I happened to look in the mirror the other day and realize neither of them looks good anymore. I don't know if it's my amount of hair or I'm doing something wrong now. I'll have to snap a picture and put it here.

I usually tend to immediately delete all evidence of my hair fails too (I've got soooo many), but I did manage to find one...

http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss110/rushaar/hair%20gone%20wrong/40E838C1-7C0B-48D0-8801-383D9EF17C50.jpg (http://s566.photobucket.com/user/rushaar/media/hair%20gone%20wrong/40E838C1-7C0B-48D0-8801-383D9EF17C50.jpg.html)
Then I got this.
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss110/rushaar/hair%20gone%20wrong/681B507B-6D70-4E3C-B37B-10086AA192AF.jpg (http://s566.photobucket.com/user/rushaar/media/hair%20gone%20wrong/681B507B-6D70-4E3C-B37B-10086AA192AF.jpg.html)
Btw, tried a new poo bar last night and I either did not wash it out well enough, need to lather 3x or it just does not like my hair. (Got the greases) and I need better lighting to get a better picture! I will have to work on that too.

I practice new styles late at night when insomnia strikes. No one needs to see pictures. I love messy buns so most of the pictures on here were beautiful to me. I am trying to learn how to french braid my own hair and my arms wear out before I get half done. I am thinking about trying toe separators to give my arms a rest. That would make an interesting picture.

Insomnia and fussy infant has kept me up so I thought I would try the hair style of the month, headband braids... It really is just a french braid, but sitting in a recliner bouncing a baby in a bouncer seat with my foot, I went with what I know. The braid side actually looks good, but the other side.... well, doing this with a mirror will help next time.

No pictures, but the other morning my fingers would not cooperate for a french braid. I was trying to braid in a paranda and my hands just wouldn't work right and the hair wasn't helping at all. I ended up with a mess that I ripped out, braided the paranda in English style and bunned it; I rebraided it into a french braid at lunch and had no problems- perfect braid with no mirror. I don't know why my hair and hands couldn't have done it before work, I do it all the time, it's not that hard, right?

This morning I went for a walk and decided to stop at a gas station to pick up a drink. While standing at the register (no other customers, cashier in back) I realized that my bun was a bit loose (I love the nautilus but can't quite get it to hold with a stick yet) and so I quick pulled out my stick, tried to do a lazy wrap, and managed to throw my stick at the cashier as she came back to the counter instead of putting it in my hair. Hair stick gone rogue? Maybe it was trying to get her to adopt it?

The "hairstick attack" made me laugh!

I went in for a one inch trim on a v shaped hemline and came out 3.5" shorter with a blunt cut (not by choice). I was tired and didn't feel well, so threw it back up into the fork a bit later (no mirror) and left it there as I went grocery shopping and to the pharmacy.

I came home to take a pic for the "wear all your hairtoys once" thread and got - this. Maybe they didn't notice?

I was trying to learn how to do a french twist on hip length hair some time ago. The first attempt didnt turn out quite as elegant as I had expected it to.

I don't have any pictures (anymore), but I couldn't do a regular ponytail properly until about sophomore year of college; I either had to do a low pony or accept weird hair bumps and dips no matter what. I still have to use a hair stick to smooth it down nearly every time.

I would like that very much. I think if my bangs weren't popping out of the braid, making it look like a total mess, I could have opted not to wrap the braid around the bun and made my accent flower bun just next to the cinnamon bun. But the bangs pretty much ruined it. Thus the reason I want to grow them out. There are so many fun things you can do with the front when it is longer. Accent braids are not as awesome with short bangs! I enjoyed the bangs for 2.5 years, but it's time for them to go.

This was supposed to be one of those Amish interwoven bun things. It turned into... well... IDEK, but it's awful:

http://i57.tinypic.com/4sfus8.jpg

And this was supposed to be a Gibson tuck (well, the videos I saw seemed to suggest you keep pulling your hair through until there's no more left... other instructions told me otherwise later):

http://i57.tinypic.com/2807haw.jpg

Here's an early French braid of mine. That strand I completely missed makes it look so... boho. Yeah, let's go with boho. :rollin:

I've done that twice. And when I see it, there's no way in hell I'm unbraiding it all and re-doing it! The first time, I just let it hang... nope, it all tangled up into a big dreadlock. The second time-- this is bad-- I just cut it off. (my piece was not so big as yours, though, and it was underneath-hair, so not a huge deal. I was on my way somewhere and was already late... rebraiding was simply not an option, and obviously acquiring another dreadlock wasn't, either.)

That was an epic fail, right? Ha ha! TorrinPaige and Siobhan gave me some advice on FB. They said if I put a bun form on the ponytail it will help keep the braid in a nice circle. I don't want to discourage anyone from trying straw curls, I think they will work out just fine if you acually use straws and not pipe cleaners as i did. (note to all longhairs; pipe cleaners will seriously mess upp your hair) Besides, my fairly straight, coarse and wirey hair, with brittle ends, just can't handle tight curls, no matter how much i dream of beautiful, flowing afro hair:(

I wish my hubby was here, because I can't take a selfie of what happened today.
Recently I have actually been able to do (tiny) braided buns. I decided to try one that was positioned like a top knot and braided my hair upwards. I thought it was long enough that it wouldn't do this anymore, but yeah, when I finished the braid, it was pointing straight up at the sky and staying vertical, defying gravity like an antenna. Hypercurly hair can do that, though mine usually doesn't. But I never braided upwards before, to be truthful, so maybe my technique was just wrong? (or right, depending on what result you want)

Interesting look--Pippi Longstocking meets Dr. Seuss?

It didn't make a good braided bun either.

I'm sorry it wasn't recorded for posterity, but probably I have saved some of you from from injury (spitting out hot coffee laughing and accidents of that sort) so maybe its just as well.

This bun brought to you by heavily oiled ends. Their mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no ends have gone before.

I have to say this made me laugh more than any other, first of all because I love Star Trek, and secondly because you're hair really does look like it's heading out to explore. Perfect, smooth, shiny bun and then NYOOM!

LOL! Thank you, ladies! :rollin: "NYOOM" is right. I couldn't believe the ends just stayed like that.

That actually looks SUPER cool, especially in your dark hair!

Your second attempt was leaps and bounds above the first, I'm really impressed. I watched the tutorial for that some time ago and immediately filed it under "beyond my skill level at the moment." I'm kind of inspired to try it though... which will undoubtedly result in another picture for this thread.

That is... quite out there, shorty89  I'm sure you'll nail it soon enough.

Did you used to have really dark red henna? I can kind of remember a 'cerise blade' signature with henna-hair. It's grown out really quickly, if so!

I did have red hair :) but it was mostly manic panic. I've been growing out for two years or so now. As fun as red hair was, I hated roots and the bleeding.

I was all proud of myself for getting a cinnabun to hold itself up until one of my coworkers asked "how do you get a ponytail to come out of the center of your bun?"

Apparently I've been walking around like this for a while today:

I get this all the time. My hair is a touch too short for cinnabuns at the moment.

How do I do this style?

I'm not sure if I could replicate it, but I can tell you what led up to it, anyway. First I did a 3-strand braid on the top of my head, with all of my hair. (I did this leaning over, upside down, to get it really high). Next I made a knot bun out of the braid, and pulled the tail through. Then I noticed the bun was kind of wobbly there on the top of my head, so I let it slide to where you see it in the picture. I fanned the braid-tail-plume out, and may have put in a pin or two, I'm not sure! Goofy, but kind of fun. :)

Alright, so this one isn't an updo, but I thought it was worth adding because this fail happened on the day I got married. Great day, bad hair day. :(

Backstory: My husband and I got married in a courthouse; the only other people there were the judge and my brother, so it was extremely casual. He wore jeans and his boots, I wore the only white non-gown dress I could find in November, and instead of having cake, we went to Godiva and got a bunch of chocolate. Honestly, my brother, who was in his uniform, looked better than both of us. Also, my family didn't know about it until a few hours before (they knew we were engaged and weren't going to have a wedding, but that's it). Very, very laid back. But, I really wanted to wear my hair down for it. Big mistake. I slept with it in a cinnabun with a scrunchie, which had given me glorious curls in the past, but this day - nope. My hair just wasn't feeling it. And then it was super windy outside...I really wish I had just put it up. Oh well. The marriage was the important part to me, I didn't much care about the rest of it

Dang that light made me look orange! :p

Aeris, you are so right that it's the marriage that counts, not the wedding. I think that your hair looks lovely in your wedding picture. Long, luscious waves and a good shine. Dramatic against the white of your dress. That picture is worthy of a frame and displaying.

I honestly think that your picture does not belong on this thread as I can't see how it's a fail.

The stick is one I got off the swap board probably six years ago, but the topper broke. And I had a labrodite pendant where the holes that would sit in a bail broke. Notched the top of the stick and epoxied in the stone:
