I pretty much summed it up in the title. I have not curled my hair since I was 15. And back then I used a curling iron. What is the best way to curl hair without a curling iron? I have those foam rollers that snap shut by I HIGHLY doubt they will snap shut after winding my hair around them a few times. So I was thinking maybe those twisty ones that are maching washable. Has anyone used those? If not, what do you do to curl your hair?

I really like this thing called "Headband curls". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLeSKaPaUOA
It's easy, and comfortable to sleep with. And it's the only way I get nice looking curls.. Every other kind I've tried has resulted in weird looking "bumps" instead of curls... :D

I like rag curls, because you can make them as wide or narrow as you want, just use pure silk satin or some other very smooth material.
I also really like doing different braids overnight. Another thing is a bun or multiple buns very close to scalp (for more root lift).

It's very important to start with damp hair (or spray hair lightly with water) and sometimes use some oil (e.g. coconut) for better hold.

Flexi rods! They work wonderfully on my almost BCL hair :)

sounds like you want barrel or spiral curls. But I wash my hair at night and I like putting them in two braids overnight for curls next day. Herringbone curls work best in my experience.

My dad used to roll my hair on socks when I was a little girl. He would put my damp hair in a high pony and roll the socks from the ends towards my scalp and tie in a loose knot to hold. I would have the most amazing spirals the next morning that would usually last most of the day. I still use this method today when I want curls.

rag curls and straw curls! I have used both of these to great success, usually with the curls lasting the week if I let them set properly. (pic is straw curls)

That sounds great and would be a good protective style to sleep in too. I’m trying into imagine the method - do you hold the sock horizontally and just keep wrapping your hair around it? I’d like to try it :) My sleep style is a high pony, smooth some argan oil through the length then plait and wrap the plait in a bun around itself.

Soft rollers would work; torrin has a tutorial on how to make and use them.

Rag curls are great! They are comfortable to sleep in, so you can easily put them in before bed and then wait for them to set overnight. Pin curls work about as well as rag curls on my hair, but I find them more uncomfortable to wear.

ETA: Here is a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tudASPjtng) about how to put in rag curls.

That is exactly right! Hold them horizontal to your head and get started by wrapping the ends around the sock. Then roll down to scalp (just like a roller or perm rod) and loosely tie. I have tried it with oiled ends but my 'curls' don't last as long as they do with clean, damp hair. My hair has always been curl resistant though, probably because it knows how much I want curly hair lol!

Thank you, I will definitely give this a go! I’m thinking of using a couple of socks, one on each side on the top of my head, like you’d put buns :)

I haven't tried the bathrobe tie method yet

But it looks promising!

It does. It looks like a cross between rag curls and French braiding techniques.

I curl my hair by sectioning my hair and then wrapping each section around the fabric part of the scrunchie. I usually separate my hair into 12 sections, so 12 scrunchies. I sometimes do less if I want a looser curl. The downside to this method is that I tend to accidentally pull out a few hairs while taking out the scrunchies (it’s probably because I’m using velvet scrunchies), but it’s very comfortable to sleep in

I tried headband curls and it didn’t work for me. I sometimes use the sleep styler foam curlers from shark tank but I only roll them part way (like I roll from the bottom and stop when it is full) so I just have curls on the bottom. I also notice my hair is not as smooth because of the foam texture. A friend uses satin covered rollers and I’m curious to try those

My avatar is my hair in its natural state, my signature pic curls were achieved with a pair of long bendy rollers/flexi rods.

My hair is extremely curl resistant and takes forever to dry if contained while damp so here's how I've managed to work around the obstacles:

- I start with completely dry hair
- I part it down the middle into 2 sections
- working 1 side at a time I gather the section as if to make a ponytail, sometimes I twist at the base to bring it together
- starting at the scalp I wrap section around the flexi roller in a spiral so there's no overlap on the wraps
- I secure the ends in place with a small claw clip
- I twist the roller into a bun shape close to my scalp
- when both halves are wrapped and secured I spritz lightly with water
- as soon as it's dry the rollers can come out and the curls are set

You can alter the look by altering the placement, changing the number of rollers, adjusting the roller size, etc.

Sponge rollers all the way.
