Do velcro rollers cause a lot of mechanical damage?
I just got some and worry they will cause issues in the long run. Does the velcro cause hair splits or anything?

Never used them myself, but I heard they're damaging because the velcro gets stuck in your hair. I know I've broken a few chunks of hair by getting it caught in the velcro on the collar of my wetsuit. Personally I wouldn't risk it when there are so many other curling methods available.

Heh. I have a jacket with velcro on the front flap - and my hair and my scarf are always getting snagged in the velcro.
Personally I'd not use velcro rollers unless my hair were just maybe chin length.
Many years ago they maderollers with little bristles (like a bottle brush) inside. I had to cut one out of my hair. There was no untangling it, and my hair was only BLS at that point. :(

I did not notice any damage when I was using them, but they made my hair frizz a lot when I was removing them. So I had no good results.

Thanks for the replies. I got them for root volume since I do not use product, the big 4 inch ones, but my hair is so fine I worry about all sorts of things happening. Frizz, splits, getting them stuck. Luckily they were only $4 so I don't have to feel bad if I don't use them. Ugh I knew I prob should not have gotten them. Velcro and hair don't sound like such a good combination when I think about it :(

I used velcro rollers once... I had to call a friend in panic to come over just to help me get the rollers and the matted tangles they left out of my hair.. It was horrible
So if you decide to try.. Be careful!

In a word yes. Velcro literally shreds hair. Ask me how I know  I would get rid of those rollers.

I work in a nursing home and sometimes have to curl hair with velcro rollers. They work nicely on short hair, but they stick to the hair really really well, and there's always quite a bit of hair left on the rollers after taking them out. I'm super careful, but still end up accidentally ripping strands. Also, the rollers make terrible noises when removed, definitely not something I would want to hear in my hair. *shudders*

I got rid of mine last week...Tried them once but they were impossible to remove without damaging my hair. So I wouldn't recommend them :)

I have the big ones and I've used them a couple times. I'd recommend them for occasional use if you're not in the mood for heat damage, and you want a look with a lot of volume. They probably aren't the best for your hair given mechanical damage over repeat use, but for the number of times a year I style my hair in curls (very rarely) they are a pretty affordable, and easy to use piece of kit.

I tried using them a couple of times and they just tangled my hair horribly but I wasn't very careful putting them in and I have pretty thick hair.

I had some cheap ones and i only used them once. When i tried to take them out it seemed like they didn't want to let go of my hair and i was left with a terrible tangled mess.. glad to hear i'm not the only one! I thought i was just using them the wrong way. I agree that it can't be good for your hair.

I can use them on my fine, tangle-prone hair no problem if I'm above APL. I also have some of the really big ones and wouldn't think of using the small ones on my hair at this length. I didn't find them shredding my hair any more so than brushing would. I was able to get them out no problem. I used to only put a thin amount of hair on each roller though because my hair just isn't that thick.
So I'd say if you're gonna use them, use the largest ones possible, and don't try to cram too much hair onto one roller.

I don't know about damage, at least permanent damage. I do know that your hair comes off fuzzy from the roller, from being stuck to the velcro. Nah, you don't want that.

Most ladies in nursing homes have short hair and they just want "done" hair. Velcro rollers work best on short hair. They tangle less when used on shorter lengths. Less tangling equals less shredding. Years ago I used one big roller on my bangs. Eventually that one roller became blonde. It had so much hair in it.

I only use a Velcro in my bangs to curl them under. It works nice for side swept bang without the use of heat. I do know they will pull hair out. I could never use them as I have really thick hair.

I use Velcro rollers a lot since I quit heat styling, multiple times a week. My avatar pic shows my hair straightened with large rollers. I haven't noticed any breakage or that they're hard to remove, just remove them gently don't like tear them out. Also I secure them with Bobby pins because the little roller clips snag my hair. Put them in towel dried hair and take them out when completely dry:)

Ok so I'm S&Ding right now and I sure do have a lot of splits. I always assume it's just because my damaged bleached hairs split easily, but after reading this thread I'm beginning to wonder if it's because of the rollers D: hmm. I'll pay closer attention next time I use them.
