Bayaliage highlights anyone?

I am trying to grow my hair out virgin, but not so happy with my medium brown with grey sparklies (was a towhead blond as a child). Anyone have experience with bayaliage highlights? Any drawbacks (beside damage of course :p)?
I'm trying to have patience and embrace the "natural" me, but I feel it's a bit flat and dull (on me). The plus side is I'm beyond BSL...what to do...what to do?
Can this be successfully done yourself? I'm even open to trying a bit on my fringe first. Thoughts?

I wouldn't try to do this one myself...but then, I'm more likely to wind up with cow spots than highlights! :laugh: Maybe someone more coordinated than I could manage it.

I did it myself. I just took pinpoint thicknesses of hair and painted them with bleach and toner. The only drawback was the damage, but the highlights were such a small portion of hair that it didn't bother me.
