View Full Version : Bangs/Fringe or no Bangs/Fringe?

(I browsed and used the search button; saw no poll about this, so can't say I didn't try if there is already one out there!)

How do you feel about bangs/fringe? Do you sport some yourself? If not, how come? Share your honest opinions, but try to be polite while you're at it. :)

No bangs...doesn't suit my face shape, and it would probably annoy me if they got greasy frequently.

I do notice people's fringe and sometimes I think they look great, other times not. I think certain bone structures can have them. And some times fringe makes women look like little girls, or detracts from the face. I have them and I hate them! :(

For years I didn't have a fringe but in February 2013, at my husband's suggestion, I had a fringe cut into my hair; which did admittedly look quite nice on me although I don't have any photo's to post on the forum of me with a fringe.

Now I know why I decided to grow my fringe out in the first place all those years ago - an awful cowlick (I think that's the term). With a full fringe on my forehead the fringe over my right eye hangs down nice and straight and even, but over my left eye the ends of the fringe stick up awkwardly so that my fringe looks awful and uneven at the end.

I've therefore decided to grow my fringe out again, but it will be around eighteen months before the ends are long enough to tie back in a ponytail. By then I should be able to achieve my ambition of being able to sit on the ends of my hair - so I WILL NOT have my hair cut to the same length all round! :) .

I have bangs (thick u-shaped) and I LOVE them and will never get rid of them. They hide my gigantic forehead, I change the shape once in a while, I play with them (heat-styling, dying) as I don't have to worry about damage, and I can have greasy-ish hair and still look polished because my bangs are clean and styled. :)

I personally don't have bangs but I honestly don't have anything towards those who do. I think there are many who do have bangs and I think it looks nice on them.

I think bangs look good on me, but the upkeep is horrendous and my bangs like to part to the side which is super annoying with blunt bangs. I'm growing them out to about chin length, as I like the face-framing effect while also being able to simply push them out of the way or behind my ears.

Edit: I'm kinda changing my opinion on this. I want to be perceived more androgynous-ly, without chopping all my hair off, and I think that growing my bangs all the way out would be the solution. Long, unlayered, bang-less hair, can't really be gendered as it can be worn by all!

I should have bangs because my forehead is quite large, but I haven't had them in many, many years. They required too much maintenance. I like simplicity and don't want to mess with them.

I have a love/hate relationship with fringe.
I generally like the way it looks on me MOST of the time. BUT no matter what sort I have, I liked whatever fringe I used to have better. I'm trapped in an endless cycle of cut, hate, love as it's growing out, try to cut when it gets too long, hate it even more, grow it all the way out, miss it, repeat.

I have a love/hate relationship with bangs. I've had them on and off for the last 7 years. Right now I'm working on growing out some blunt bangs I cut in over the summer and hopefully I can leave them alone this time! I do like them on others, I think that's why I end up cutting my own so often.

I'm trying to grow mine out for at least the third time. Maybe it's nostalgia, I've had bangs for most of my life, seems I can't let them go. This time I'm really growing them out though. If I ever get the urge to get bangs I'm considering using clip ons.

I don't have bangs/fringe (but I've had in the past) and I generally don't like them... I think most people look way better without them, to be honest, and I can't understand why they're so popular.

I have them because of my face shape (side bangs). I've had them since I was a kid. Then I didn't for a while when my hair got curly during the puberty. Now my hair is straighter and I can have them again. I do like them and I kind of missed them although they do annoy me sometimes especially because I have wavy hair. I don't mind them on others, but they tend to look better on some people. I probably wouldn't have them, if I had a different face shape though.

I think it's important to keep in mind that there are different styles of fringes and I think everyone can look super great if they find the type that is for them. (Well, personally I think those feathered 80s-90s fringes look bad on nearly everyone, but that's just my opinion. I bet they'll come back in style any day now, haha!) I don't have a fringe at the moment but I'm considering it because I think they're cute, even if they are a pain to grow out if you change your mind.

I have bangs and like them a lot - always have. I'm always surprised when people say they're high matinence. Sure they need to be trimmed more often (I usually need them done every three months; not too bad imho) but to me since they're much easier to care for than the rest of my hair do to not tangles (my hair care es NOT get easier with more length). And I've never found they get greasierer faster than anything else. But like I said I've always had bangs so I'm sure I'm missing a perspective.

I've always been disappointed that bangs are a minority where i am - I find they look really nice on most people. Like any hairstyles I find it depends on the type of bangs for face shape. I prefere full straight bangs which I usually have but when I don't get them cut for awhile like right now, they become half-bangs which a few people told me they prefer. But I like them full so I'll be fixing that when I go to the salon

I don't have a fringe as I have a very annoying cowlick that just messes everything up when it comes to fringes. It's a bit sad as I think fringes can look nice and it might be fun to try having it again as an adult, but I won't dare go there :D Experience tells me I have have no control of that part of my hair at all.

18 months of grow out on my bangs... but I'm cutting them again next week! :)

For years I kept them to camouflage a high forehead. Now I'm totally over my forehead insecurity, but like bangs because I feel like that line of dark hair over my light eyes calls attention to them.

I always end up cutting bangs, and then I grow them out and start all over again on a whim. Maybe one day I'll learn that my hair gets greasy too fast, and it's way too hot here, and having sweaty hair plastered to my forehead is not fun.

I go back and forth on bangs/fringe. I grow them out for awhile but get them cut back in when I need a change. I like both looks on me.
Lately I've been having them cut in for fall and winter but start growing them out in mid-winter so that they're long enough to braid completely off my face in the summer.

I am growing out bangs now. I had them for five years because I thought my forehead was too big. I felt envious of women with beautiful foreheads and no bangs, because I always had this traditional view of REAL long hair as hair without bangs... I don't know exactly why. Then I met my boyfriend and he told me he didn't like my bangs, so I started growing them out and my forehead is not that bad! And I am enjoying my hair better. I know it sounds absurd

I really like them, and I actually think I look better with a fringe (it's grown out to about shoulder length now), but it requires effort to keep it looking nice and it means that there's hair that I can't tie up without bobby pins (and when I tried to do that it'd always stick up and look stupid) and I have to be able to put my hair up completely so it's simply not an option any more. Working on trying to soften the look of updos without a fringe, but that's not going too well so far.

This is a hard one to answer. I have bangs and I like them, but there is no hairstyle that fit every person, it all comes down to personal preference and style. I do think almost anyone can pull off some sort of bangs, but that do not mean it is the prettiest style on everyone.

Some people look better with bangs, some people look better without. I'm one of those people who definitely look better with bangs. They bring a certain balance to my face. I just look off whenever I grow them out.

I think bangs are beautiful in general. I have a longish face and a high forehead, and know bangs look good on me. But to have them, I'd have to cut into the thickness of my already very fine, thin hair. I can blow them dry, and spray them stiff- 20 minutes later, they are stringy and oily and hanging into my eyes.. So, no more bangs for me. I like to comb my hair over to make fake side swept bangs when I do certain updos, though, and I think it looks pretty good.

I have bangs and I love them. I have a long oval face with lots of forehead, and I think I look tons better with them. I have a looser wave pattern in the front, so cutting into that to make bangs helps my wavier hair stand out more, and the loose wave makes nice swooshy bangs. But no, I definitely don't think they're for everybody.

I think bangs generally look really cute on most people and I so wish I could pull them off too.

However, with my waves and a forehead cowlick my bangs are doomed to look funny from the start. I never seem to learn that though and every few years I cut in new bangs, thinking "itīll look better this time". Its a never-ending cycle. The last time I cut bangs was last autumn and here I am, growing them out yet again because- you got it: it looked insane this time around as well! It just wont lay nicely no matter what. I cut them to the top of my eyebrows and theyre now almost touching my upper lip when stretched so at least theyre growing fast... Finally I can make half ups without having to pin them up separately.

Never again. Never.again

I'm really on the fence about this. I'm growing my bangs out mostly out of curiosity because I never stray from bangs (also a good tracker of my overall progress).
Aside from this I generally like them, but mostly out of having grown up with them and such. As for who wears them, people are entitled to look how they please, I find with and without can create different looks for people and at the same time it depends how curly your hair is and how much maintenance one is willing to put into it.

I had blunt bangs, and I loved them. I ended up growing them out because I am lazy. I hate blowdrying, but I had to either blowdry or straighten my bangs to make them look nice.

I always have some sorta long side swept bangs going on. Whenever I get inspired to cut them straight across I never maintain them and they end up side swept again. I like bangs because they give more style to my hair. Also my forehead is above average, and I have a birthmark at my hairline which is visible if I pull all my hair back.

I think bangs can look really good or really bad depending how the person does it, but I guess the same goes for all hairstyles not just bangs.

I do not have bangs, I don't think they work with my face. I had them when I was younger, and kind of liked them, but my hair was totally different then (baby fine, with a terminal length at just below shoulder...it's very strange...) I think having bangs or not is a very personal choice, and there isn't one answer that will work for everyone. For myself, I'm quite happy without bangs :)

I've just started growing my fringe out. Again. I love fringes, and mine suited me, but the way my hair waves at the front made it hard work. I had to straighten it regularly to keep it looking ok, and one day I noticed all these really short hairs sticking up from where my fringe started. They were at most a quarter of the length of the fringe. I have no idea how long they'd been there but it freaked me out and got me worrying that the hair was breaking off because of the straightening. So, like my fringe though I did, I thought it better to stop damaging the hair and grow it out.

I have a side fringe that I'm growing out, it's so frustrating pinning it into updos! I definitely regret cutting this!
That said, I think they can look nice on most people. Blunt bangs are harder to pull off, but still, not necessarily bad!

I think bangs/fringe look good on people who do have them (just depending on the style, really, some do look atrocious, I'll admit, but I think bangs/fringe can look nice on anyone), though I do not have either. My hair is wavy/curly (goes into a full ringlet at the very ends) and I just can't be bothered to style bangs/fringe everyday to make it look nice or to maintain the shape of them with regular trims. Not to mention my fine hair just cannot hold a style, at all. I also don't like hair hanging in my face all that much either or having it plastered to my forehead when it rains (it rains here a lot). I used to have bangs when I was younger, when my hair was pin straight and I think they would look nice on me, just too lazy.

I am currently growing out my bangs, but I love straight bangs so much and really would love to keep them because they're so cute and look good on my face. But it always seems like they never lay right on my face and they are usually see through and not thick-looking how I'd like them to be.

I think they're great, almost everyone suits one style or another. They can make such a difference to the way people look, without losing length (ideal for me, even an inch and I feel sad lol). I had a fringe last year. I spent the whole summer with a sweaty fringe glued to my forehead. Oh yeah and every night out I looked grim after 3 seconds dancing, which was also great. Not.

I've grown it out now, but I miss it, especially for how it looked in updos.

I cannot stand bangs. I think they look fantastic on just about everyone, but with curly hair, they can be a real hassle. I'm also currently growing out Bettie bangs. I had them from ages 15-19. I don't think bangs are worth it because they take -literally- forever to grow out. I feel like bangs are a serious commitment and pretty high maintenance xD

I made the bad decision to get blunt, heavy bangs at 13 yrs old. Combined with 13 yr old hormones, I had HORRENDOUS acne on my forehead. It was a vicious cycle of trying to hide the pimples and trying to grow out the bangs. It took about 3-4 years to fully get over that agony. :-( I've considered doing whispy side bangs, but can't imagine how they'd look and just can't commit.

I have bangs, but they look hideous on me - especially with my fringe being partly bleached and partly dyed. I really dislike the period between short bangs and growing them out, but I have decided to do just that - grow them out. I mainly did the no-trim challenge so that when my bangs get too long to be short and too short to be long (that dreaded in-between stage), I can hold myself accountable and NOT GET THEM CUT.

I had different style of bangs when I was younger but because my hair is wavy (especially the front part), they were annoying to style and I gave up. I also never knew what do with them when wearing my hair up, they would get greasy, and made my forehead greasier as well. So they mostly annoyed me, but if you have time for them and like them on yourself, then sure! They look amazing and can be styled or adapted to so many face shapes and styles

I have bangs currently that I cut myself on a whim almost a year ago. Technically they're curtain bangs, but shrinkage and styling can get them above my eyes. I love them, but I'm also ready for them to grow out!

I do like how bangs look on others, but I feel if you've had bangs all your life, it's good to grow them out and see how it changes your face shape.

I had a fringe for about a year, I think. I had them cut to hide a bad face-framing incident. I had the arched style, and I liked them for a little while, but over the course of that year, I grew frustrated with having to wash and blow-dry them every morning (I have wavy hair, so my fringe would always kink in spots, and the longer outer bits would curve up, so if I left them un-styled, it looked like I had horns on my head). I ended up growing them out. It's been a year since, and they're now juuust under my chin. I've been thinking of getting them shaped into a curtain fringe, because I happen to like how I look with something against my face, but I don't know. I've heard having them is work, too. Maybe I'll get them shaped so I can grow them out as 'face-framing' pieces.

I used to absolutely loooove bangs, especially the the straight-bang look that goes all across the forehead. For maybe a year or so I was dedicated to maintaining mine, BUT!
I have since learned that for growing hair long (especially for those with finer hair types) it's not the best option, as the hair is touching your skin at all times and therefore can get more oil and dirt trapped in it, and requires more frequent washing. I know that to keep hair long and strong it is better to wash it less frequently, and even just washing the bangs themselves can be a way to work around it, but honestly it just felt like too much of a hassle for me. It was a huge pain to grow them out, but I'm so glad that I did because not having bangs to worry about seems to have significantly improved my overall hair health, for whatever reason. Much more than I would have expected, at least.

Oh, I had the same problem! Once I decided to stop using any heat on my hair I had to either embrace the awkward 90 degree angles that were popping out at the ends or let them go.

I had bangs when I was a little kid. Then again as a teen, and again as an adult. They look ok. As a teen they were *always* greasy and stringy so I washed them morning and night. Also at that time my skin would break out from the greasies. :( Later, as an adult, had them after a facial injury to hide stitches and scars. Always greasy and irritating. Zits. Grew them out and decided I'd be "old scar face" but a miracle happened and the scars faded away! Never bangs again if I can avoid it. Too much trouble trying to grow them out, hair is too thin anyway, buns are way too small.

My bangs are currently at chin length. It's tempting to cut them back, but then I remember that I basically need to style them every time. The longer they get, the more I can put them out of the way and out of mind.

Right now I feel annoyed that I have been shortening my front hair all the time compared to the hair behind. I really would love to have long long strands also on the front side. That's mermaid hair! (Ok, Disney Ariel had some sort of bangs but the mermaids in real life you know... ;) )
