View Full Version : "Mad Men" Hair?

I am obsessed with the hair on this show. I know, I know -- it's all horribly back-combed and hairsprayed and tortured to death, but the updos are so ... sculptural. I'm particularly in love with the hairdo of the new secretary, Jane.
So, a few questions for my fellow fans: Can anyone get a good picture of Jane's hair, particularly from the side? I tried on the interwebs, and no luck. I suppose I could try to download an ep and use a screen-capture program, but I thought I'd check first to see if anyone else had already done this. :D
Question 2: How the heck do you get that hair? I mean, without frying yourself? Maybe I need to get the picture first and then put the talented Isilya to work. ;) But if anyone else watches the show and has ideas -- about her hair or Joan's hair -- I'd love to hear them!

No ideas but the hair is very interesting! I wish Peggy would wear hers down more and vary it though. I know it fits her character but still..I saw her with it down in a flippy style and it looked WAY better!

I know! She looked gorgeous when she got all dolled up and went to the, um, strip club, didn't she? [I just realized how weird that sentence might seem to someone who doesn't watch the show! :o]
I thought she was really homely up till that point -- deliberately, as part of her characterological development -- but with her hair down she's quite beautiful.
curlsgirl, I've been meaning to say I love your new avatar and siggy! :)]

Grr we won't get Season 2 here in the UK until next year! I was struck by how different Elisabeth Moss looked as Peggy from how she appeared as Zoey Bartlet in The West Wing - not just a matter of age.

This week's is quite Jane-centric, so you can really see what I'm talking about with the hair.
Ooops, Tabitha -- hope we didn't spoil you! :)

Thanks but don't worry about it - I'm sure I will have forgotten anything I read here by next year and in any case, it's the kind of show you watch for more than just the plot denouements. I really enjoyed it although it had some very dark moments.
By sheer coincidence, I found myself singing the song that featured in the jazz/folk club a couple of weeks after that episode, in my singing evening class (By The Waters of Babylon).

I try to do this sort of thing with judicious use of hairscroos and using my own hair as a rat :silly:

First of - I lovelovelove MadMen! :inlove: I love everything about it - the storyline, the design, the women, the un-PC-ness of it all...

Woa! Is that In IBM Selectric typewriter? The one with the ball? I remember those! I haven't seen one of those in years.
I've never seen or heard of the show--but the pictures are interesting!

Oh, you gotta watch it! It's set on Madison Avenue, in an advertising firm, circa 1960 (I think they're up to 1962 now). I mean, really, the hair alone! :crush: But it's also smart, dry, well acted, great furniture, interesting, lovely clothes.... :inlove:

People also used hair pieces A LOT in that period, and wigs too. My mum even had a blonde wig that she wore to play tennis on occasion. The mind boggles.

Kuchen, my mum had one too!
I once wore a wig for a fancy-dress party, and the itching nearly killed me. Yes, the mind does boggle.
Mely, if you have the chance, do catch it! It's just awesome, especially for a retro-lover like me.

I'm also interested in cool hairdos like this, but yeah, all the instructions I ever see involve evilness to my hair. I think we should form some sort of "Healthy Elaborate Updo" club, where we can figure out hair friendly alternatives to hairsprays, ratting, etc. As for the ratting, yeah, I suspect the solution involves using something besides your own hair. Unless you have such long hair that you could do something really tricky. :hmm:

Dorothea-Brooke, if you want to go as Joan (the red-headed secretary) - or anybody else wants to - send me a PM. I know a great seller on ebay who does tailor-made clothes for an unbeatable price. She usually does both classic suits and dresses as well as celebrity-inspired clothing, and at the moment she also offers a Joan-dress.
(I wasn't sure if it was ok to post the seller link here, so just send me a PM).
I have ordered from her in the past, and am always more than satisfied.

LOVE those hair styles - what's fun is that paired with a cute top and jeans I don't actually think they'd look that dated at all. I am flummoxed as to how any of them would be achieved without a) massive product overkill or b) the backcombing tease of ripping, tangled death.
But I am certainly lo0oking forward to our more creative hair gurus to enlighten me on this :p

Arctic Mama, this picture from IMDB (it shows "Joan" and "Trudy") makes me think that there are at least hairpieces involved, if not even wigs:

A Joan-dress?!!! Oh my oh my, I'm fainting into my morning tea here.... This would also give me a good excuse to use a temporary red hair dye, which is always so fun. (I used one last year for my Pippi costume, too.)
Yes, it looks like from those photos that major hairpiece action is going on.... :D

Anybody remember this scene from Season 1 - the Beaujolie lipsticks? When she leans over and applies the lipstick, fully knowing that it's a two-way mirror and all the boys are watching behind it? And Ken actually standing up and saluting her?

We watched the most recent episode last night and I asked my DH because I thought it looked like Joan had a wig on. I LOVE that show mostly for the retro authentic EVERYTHING and it is very addictive too! I was glad to see Peggy change from her teenage look to the glamorous look! That blue dress was really pretty! I am just amazed at all the sexist attitudes they can get away with on that show. I think the blonde girl is very pretty and I can't wait to see what happens as his affairs are becoming known. I bet she has an affair with the horse club guy!

She is amazing, isn't she? I'm starting to see that this Halloween "costume" is going to require a whole self-study program: walk, voice, the "look," the attitude....
Oh Joan, we hardly know ye! :D

Okay, I just found this (http://pompsnpincurls.googlepages.com/beehive).
All seems fine till Step 13 (they even advocate using Blaxx or other hair-friendly elastics!), at which point it all goes to h*ll and the back-combing starts....
But I think one could recreate most of the general idea without the backcombing...? What do you all think?

It looks plausible! I'm willing to give it a try :D I'm gonna do a dry shampoo tonight, so the brush is coming out anyway. If I try it I'll report with results.

Sorry for taking so long! I got sick and forgot all about this. As you see, one should not attempt this without an ARMY of bobby pins. (I only had a small battalion, so I had to use claw clips, which ruined the look some.)
It takes at least half an hour to do, and if you're going to avoid those wispies STICKING OUT EVERYWHERE *breathes* you'll want to mist your hair some. And don't attempt it on clean hair!
As for the backcombing, my bangs make that pretty much impossible. I think you could do something similar with a bit of effort, because it really does need that volume in the front.
I think you could achieve the pinless look with some practice, or with a vict- err, assistant to help you.

Just bumping this thread for any UKers who are watching Mad Men Season 2 on BBC4. Last night was episode 8 - A Night to Remember. Where Betty accuses Don, and throws him out. I look forward to watching it every Tuesday.

Nooooooooo I missed it. Flipping heck. Last week I missed because I was out and never caught up.
I hadn't really thought about copying the hairstyles, but of course since most people had shorter hair i could most likely roll mine into a puffy rat to get the look without backcombing.
I have also bought fake hair bun things to backomb which did the job. Almost.

I read somewhere that they make the female cast members wear vintage-style undies, bras and girdles to give the authentic silhouette.
