View Full Version : Hair idols for guys

Kikina

I couldn't find such topic, and if I have missed it, please let me know.

I guess most of the female members have their hair idols to look up to, or at least a folder full of amazing hair pictures.

I am curious about what guys find inspiring while growing their hair. (:

I'm not a guy, but I feel that Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Kelly) should be a hair idol for guys, if he isn't. He has always had gorgeous, shiny long hair.

Peter Steele (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Steele) had some awesome hair, too, RIP.

One of my guy friends is growing his hair out because he wants to look like a wizard.

Steve Aoki's hair always looks so shiny!
I also think Jari Maenpaa's fine blond hair is incredible. It's always in motion....!

I've always been partial to Johnny's hair, but I think it's 'cause he's a straight-y like me. ;) But yes, Josh has had some EPIC hair as well! Like trolleypup, I don't see a need for long-haired role models that are men.

Most men's hair tends to be disastrous, especially by my age. I'm just happy to be an exception.

Of course, Ed and I are are at lengths where we are growing for the hair rather than for the look, or even the point of growing. I think we are both past the point of being insecure about appearing masculine with (very) long hair. Our idols would be anyone with longer/better/whatever hair than we have.

For men who are starting to grow, or growing from typically long (for men) lengths, seeing manly men (if that is your goal/expectation) with very long hair might be helpful...I see quite a bit of that over on the men's board.

All depends on how secure you are in who and what you are.

Interestingly, given the power dynamic in today's society, men tend to be less offended by objectification. (BTDT...I'm sure there copies of that image still floating around the internet)

trolleypup: I honestly wasn't trying to objectify anyone... I find long hair on guys attractive, is that wrong? Are we going in the other direction, when admitting you find someone attractive is wrong? A lot of guys like long hair on women, does that necessarily objectify long haired women? I apologize if my post offended anyone! In my culture this is not considered wrong... Others have commented on some of these guys being attractive, yet my post has been singled out, I really don't understand the issue, but I meant no offence to anyone. And I have no idea which image you are referring to...

Not pointing you out, yours just happened to be the post when the thought came up. What I was saying is that men tend to be less uncomfortable with being objectified than women. Appreciate the attractiveness as you wish.

Certainly no offense.

I've actually wondered this too. One day I was watching a music video by Nightwish, one of my favorite bands. Marco Hietala came on and randomly I thought, "He has an awesome beard and great hair." XD I googled his name and 'beard' and found out there's a fan page for his beard and fans that are trying to grow their beard like him. I think that's pure awesome.

Eicca from Apocalyptica has freaking awesome hair.

Alexi and Janne in particular have some great hair, but Children of Bodom all have long hair I think. Jaska is who I'm not sure on.

Finntroll as previously mentioned.

Turias has some good hair overall.

Since Marco Hietala has been mentioned, his other two bands have more good hair. Tarot and Northern Kings.

But, yeah, I'm stuck with Finnish metal while trying to not go too weird. Granted, they're still a bit odd at times. There are oh twenty billion pictures out of the various bands that'll make you shake your head, Apocalyptica, CoB, Turias and Tony Kakko are probably responsible for 80% of the pictures.

I can't tell with Janne, but Alexi only has shoulder length hair now (perhaps since he's well into his 30s, or maybe even 40s?). And there's more than just the Finnish boys, though I know I personally only provided one non-Finnish example. :p

I'm trying to keep with bands who are semi-known :) I've got a ton more, but we're pushing obscure. And keep in mind, I'm finding Turias to be semi-known and normal.

Alexi had oh APL or so last year, but I don't know about current. He's mid 30s or so, little older than me. I want to say 34/35. Granted, he looks about 12, but oh well :)

Elias with Sonata Artica has Golden Retriever type adorable hair.

I've also got a thing for the drummers with shaggy hair - Mikko from Apocalyptica and Doom from Rammstein when his is grown out.

My hair idol is the character Aragon from the famed "The Lord of the Rings". Even though there were long haired men with neat well kept hair in the movie, this guys hair attracted me. It was the untamed, shaggy, rough and tough look. Even though I was afraid to hit the road, this film inspired me a lot. And here I am...after nearly 4 years...still going on...

Matt Zane had some pretty epic long black straight hair (he's a "rockstar"/pornstar/director). I also remember going to a metal concert years ago where the lead singer had blond hair down to the floor, and he kept whipping it into the audience purposely, so being flirty I grabbed it and he ended up looking at me, lol---I have no idea what band that was, I think they were independent

Looking at pictures with my older daughter as she can't sleep from anxiety. She wants to be able to headbang and be on the floor for concerts.

Found hair I totally forgot, probably because I'm a spaz monkey and can't remember his name, but I know his bands. Keyboards for Kamelot, created Sons of Seasons, did keyboards for Epica on part (all?) of their 2010 tour. His hair ranges from low APL to mid back or so.

I agree! One of my rules in dating guys is their hair can't be longer than mine (mine is belt length) UNLESS his is a rocker (I think this guy must be) or do to cultural reasons... he is beautiful!

Like trolleypup, I don't see a need for long-haired role models that are men.

Most men's hair tends to be disastrous, especially by my age. I'm just happy to be an exception.

Actually both of them mentioned in this post are male manes to be insipred byThank you, Seeshami. You are very kind. :flowers:

Unfortunately, my hair is not in good shape. It has become brittle and I have lost quite a bit of length due to breakage. I am hoping that I can improve my hair's condition by wearing it up.

The best thing I can say about my hair is that it is rather long compared to nearly all 50-year old men (outside of the LHC). ;)

Does anyone use beard rings for braids in their hair? I like the rings worn in Jack Sparrow's hair as well as the dwarves in The Hobbit. I'm hoping to be able to adorn my hair with such trinkets next year (if I can find out where to buy them in the UK)

Rick Wakeman of Yes, before he cut it back to shoulder length. Not remotely my hair type or colour, and much longer than mine would ever grow, but it used to be quite a sight.
YESSSSS! Love that band. Rick Wakeman had amazing long hair back in the day as did Robert Plant and many others

..... But I have to agree with Seeeshami here. There's plenty of long haired male role models right here on this forum. Ed's 'Silver Swirl ' will be legendary, there's Trolley Pup, Rowie and plenty of other men's hair to admire and look up to.

I always associate Rowie with the best hair toys and huge buns and completely forgot he has absolutely stunning hair too and not just fantastic style. He has style and hair role model status. i honestly think all of our gents are great role models the more i try to remember who is male and who is female. Gumball too with his to die for curls and braids.

Wow trying to remember our genders is crazy!

There is another member with silver hair that has thinned out on top and he unapologetically continues his growth despite societies expectation he shave himself bald simply because his hair has thinned up top. A brave and courage role model.. I think..... Bill D......?????

And I go back to I am pretty sure all our gents are role models simple for the fact they are The LHC Gentlemen.

Yeah I agree with this with regards to gender shouldn't matter. I'm a guy and my hair idols were women and also I would look to traditionally "women's" styles when choosing how to wear my hair on a night out or business things. But then again I believe that everything should be open and gender doesn't matter.

Yeah, I have a few "twins" in SF. I've met a couple of them, long hair, but not close.

I assume I've told this before, but...

Back when I was driving buses, a guy boards, stops, and exclaims "(name), What the (word) are you doing driving a but?!?!?!" I just said, "Which one of my twins do you know?" Turns out his roommate was one of my "twins" I already knew (he worked for the Symphony, I hung out at the Opera), so I told the guy to say Hi for me.

cjk - I am not sure why you are posting a photo of Einstein. He was not known for hair.

Perhaps you and I have different definitions of "idol." Einstein was known primarily for his contribution to the atomic age with his general theory of relativity.

But he was also somewhat of a celebrity scientist, as were Nikola Tesla, Carl Sagan, and Stephen Hawking. Not only his work, but HE, himself, was famous.

In the case of Einstein he also was known for his appearance, his wild and carefree (our term) natural hair becoming one of his recognizable trademarks.

It even served as the prototype for the "wild haired" mad-scientist in movies, for decades, including Doc Brown in Back to the Future.

So yes, he was known for his flowing locks. And yes, he does serve as a hair idol for men. Or at least one man. Me.

This thread should have been titled "Long hair idols for guys". :)

Re-reading the thread confirmed that examples are very few if one considers only men. They are predominantly metal musicians. As I recall, long-haired musicians like these guys (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/After_the_Rain_(Nelson_album)) were not considered ridiculous around 1990. Unfortunately, social norms have since regressed. :(

Guys who grew up before or after hair metal music was in vogue are looking at women for long hair inspiration. :)

My three personal ones are George Harrison circa 1970 My sweet Lord era (Thick and glorious), Rick Mora (Has my same hair texture straigh, dark and sleek) and Pheloki the german artist youtuber who has amazing classic lenght hair.

EdG

The ABBA ladies had nice hair. George Harrison had impressive hair too. 70s hair was typically "longish" rather than "long". Cher and Crystal Gayle were exceptions.

Most LHC'ers consider waist-length to be the start of "long" (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/poll.php?pollid=1177&do=showresults). BSL is the second most-common definition. The survey applies to both men's and women's hair. :)

I had a friend in college with mid back length hair I envied at the time. But as others on here have said, I haven't really worried about whether someone was male or female to be a hair idol. I have just admired nice long hair regardless, and done my best to achieve the same.
