View Full Version : Finally have my dream hair, but I am not happy.

Well, my hair is perfect. I have surpassed waist, and now am bordering hip (with a SOLID waist curly). My hair has never been chemically treated, rarely heat styled. It's beautiful. Drool-worthy. But I'm struggling with it.

I have a baby, almost toddler. I have always disagreed with the idea that mom's cut off their hair, but now I am seeing why. I can't ever do anything with it. It has to be pulled back. It takes so long to wash and care for and I'm not enjoying my long hair. I considered bangs, but I have decided against that because of the curliness of my hair. Updos are also starting to give me headaches, so a low braid or low ponytail is all I can do.

So, I'm going to enjoy my hair for a week or two more, then cut it back to APL. I will probably let it grow back to BSL-sih. Maybe by then, it will be easier with LO.

Anyway, to commemorate the beautiful hair:

As a mom of 3 (almost 4 yr old and almost 2 yr old twins) I would say hold off! You're almost through the worst part and soon you'll be able to wear it down again. Since my twins hit 18 months I spend way less time carrying them and therefore wear it down more often. Since the twins were born I didn't chop it, but I did trim off all new growth and I regret it now. My hair would have been so much longer by now!

I mean if you really want it shorter go for it, but if it's simply about convenience I would wait. If you cut to APL it will take you years to grow it back to almost hip. And believe me you will care about your hair again soon.

I find french braids and simple buns easy when I'm really hands on with my kids. As they get older they are interested in my hair and like to gently touch it. "soft" they say :)

Of course I support your decision to cut it if you want to, but I agree with Applegirl. In the long run it will take longer to grow back out than it will take for your baby to get to the stage where you have time for your hair.

I appriciate your input, but you realize you are saying "Your child is 9 months, by the time he is double that age it gets better". DOUBLE.

And I'm only talking about cutting 8-10 inches, that won't take YEARS to grow back. 18 months really. (I'm quite short).

And no one even noticed that my hair is giving me headaches in updos?

Anyway, I see what you all are saying. In fact, I keep telling myself the same thing. It's like one side of my head wants to keep it long, and the other side wants to cut it. I also want to explore my curl pattern at a shorter length, seeing as how the top doesn't curl or wave much at all anymore.

I just don't know. I mean I had a pixie 3 years ago, it wouldn't take that long to grow back out. I want to try it shorter, explore my curls, make it easier to care for, try something different for a while. It will always grow back long again. By the time I think I would miss it, it would be well on its way to growing back out, you know?

Yes, you can wear low buns as well as the braids and tails. Babies can still grab at the APL hai so , I'm not so sure you would find anything less than a pixie/short bob to be short enough without tying it back anyway. My take is, it's either got to be really short or if it's long enough to tie back, it might as well be as long as it can be. I'd think long and hard about a chop. Just my $.02. ;)

I'm sad that you aren't happy with your dream hair.

I have 11 children, and if I cut my hair for each of them, I wouldn't have any hair at all. ;)

Babies grow. So does hair. Just be sure you are doing what you want and will have no regrets.

True, but APL hair is not going to fall on the baby in the swing and wake him up like hip length hair will (that happened this morning. I got him asleep and was putting him down, and my hair fell over and woke him up!)

I am thinking long and hard about it, and it's driving me mad! It's heavy, it takes a lot of conditioner, it takes a long time to wash (the one time a week I get to wash it) it gives me headaches. I can't wear anything but a low bun or braid or low ponytail. I miss high buns and ponies. I wish the top had more curl and wasn't pulled down by the length. I don't like having to worry about where it is when I sit down or fasten my seatbelt or have to pull my low pony/low braid out of my coat every time I put it on. I feel like I go through all this trouble for what? To have long hair? To what end? So I can say I can? I don't ever get to wear it down or enjoy it, even if it is low maintenance it is a burden to what end?

Maybe I should just take a few inches off at a time and see how I feel. I only recently started getting the headaches, maybe a few inches off would make the difference.

I'm not a mom so who am I to weigh in but ... in my opinion, if your hair's bothering you that much, you should cut it. I think that the idea of a few inches at a time only is a good one - your hair is beautiful and I'm sure you've taken a good bit of time growing it, so you don't want to regret a big chop. Heck, I just got a trim and I regretted it immediately (but my hair is much shorter)! Anyway, what I wanted to say was that sometimes when we reach our 'dreams' we discover they're not all they're cracked up to be, and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting APL or BSL hair instead of the original goal. Like others have said, just be sure that is what you want. And then, hey, give it a shot, a few inches at a time. If you don't like it, it'll grow back.

I am sorry your hair is giving you headaches! I find that I get headaches if I bun too tightly...it seems the tension is the cause for me, rather than weight. My hair is thicker than yours and similar in length. Not nearly as curly though... Perhaps playing with the tension of your buns would alleviate the headaches?

Also - only cut it if you are CERTAIN. My hair was BSL/Waist-ish when my DD was about 9 months...and I chopped it to APL thinking shorter would be easier with a grasping little girl covered in rice-cereal always trying to touch my hair. I was wrong! APL hair left loose is still within the grasp of a child's hands, so I STILL had to wear it up daily. Plus, the thickness factor made bunning impossible for me at APL. I was stuck with ponytails and/or a braid. I got really annoyed and chopped to chin after that. Chin was annoying for a different reason - I couldn't pull it back at all! Plus, short hair on me requires actual styling...I have a feeling short hair may be more work for you than you think. I really wish I had not cut my hair to APL then Chin when DD was 9-12 months old. It was way more work than I thought it would be and her grab-everything-in-sight phase did not last as long as the short hair did.

Take time with your decision. It will take time to grow it back out...more time than you think. If you are certain it is the best choice and that you will be happy with it then go for it. But be sure first.

I have never regretted cutting my hair, no matter what reason. Hair grows back. Enjoy APL!

I have a suggestion: get layers! This will enable you to explore your curls, since the layers will reduce the weight that is currently dragging them down. And it will also make your hair lighter, so will likely eliminate the headaches. Have your shortest layer at BSL and your longest at where you are now. That way, you get to keep the length and the drool-worthiness, set your curls free, and reduce the weight and bulk of the hair. And if you don't like them, you can always cut everything to the shortest layer and just go to BSL (or shorter). :)

I don't have children, so I don't have any experience with babies and loose hair/updos. It really sounds like your hair is making you unhappy though, and I think maybe a small chop would be a good idea. I'd start with bsl first, and then try apl if your hair still bothers you. If you need to put it up, you can probably do a peacock twist, french twist or tucked braid. As others have said, if you don't like it, it'll grow back. Good luck! :)

I agree with others: if it's bothering you, cut it. I ended up regretting cutting my hair but it grows back. It was shoulder length last year and now I'm getting closer and closer to waist. My 7 week old baby is already pulling my hair all the time so I feel your pain! :D

BTW your hair IS gorgeous!

Nothing wrong with cutting your hair. I got my hair cut this year after agonizing over it for about 2 years. Now I don't know why I didn't just go ahead and do it 2 years ago.

First of all, Misspriss, your hair is GORGEOUS! I just love your curls and I think your hair is definitely curlier than 2b/2c.
I know the decision to cut is totally up to you, but I quietly hope you'll reconsider. :)

1) Long hair is easier to keep away from your face thanks to braids/buns/half-ups/ponies. Shorter hair is quite demanding in terms of styling.
One thing that happens with curlies at shorter length (APL, for example) is that hair almost always ends up in your face unless you pin it away, use hairbands or something. I totally agree with Hairitic that only a pixie/short bob can give you the ease you want without contained hairstyles.

2) Braids/buns/half-ups/ponies may sound boring and limiting, but it's still more variety than what you'll probably get with shorter hair and still having to pin it away with a baby/toddler around.

3) If you do decide to do this, try first going slow: e.g. cut to midback first. Chances are it will be dramatic enough change in terms of ease of washing/detangling and you'll know for sure whether you really want to lose more length.

Do what you enjoy! :) And whether you decide to cut or not, you have awesome hair! :)

Uuughh I feel you. I don't have children though (and never will) so I can't even imagine what it'd be living with all these hair-inconveniences AND a baby :run:
Hootenani gave you a great idea I think, layers could really lift weight.

Ravenreed and Spidermom I wish I was like you! My inner Sansa chastises me each time I consider chopping because it's not "lady like". Sheesh.

Did you feel that way about your hair when it was slightly shorter? Like waist, or BSL? No, well then the last few inches are only getting to you. Maybe try and cut about 2 to 4 inches back and see what that does for your frustration.

You need to learn a variety of updos, and change it daily. This is the best way to take care of hair, avoid getting it caught up in handles. I always used to catch my hair on handles in the kitchen. I had to put my long hair up to cook. To cook. So it wouldn't get singed.

Long hair is a bit of a present from God. When first having long hair it takes a bit to get into a routine. It can take some time to work a routine out.

Since your hair is luxurously curly, gorgeous, TRULY. I recommend you look into the book Curly Girl and take up Conditioner Only washing. That's the best way to wash your hair. I would love to see how a curly girl oils her hair. Because the way I recommend oiling hair doesn't work well for curly girls. Curly hair needs a LOT of moisture.

Your hair is gorgeous! I would start with a BSL cut and see how you feel from there. If it is still too heavy you can always go shorter.
I wouldn't recommend cutting to everyone but your reasons are valid and you seem to have put a lot of thought into it. It seems to me you are simply looking for support in your decision and I understand that. It will grow back and BSL is still considered long in the real world.

Do you have a goal length or anything that you are wanting? AS long as you wont feel set back I think you will feel ok. You grew out a pixie pretty fast.
I do wonder if APL may shrink up to CBL or SL so definately start with BSL and see how much spring you get back in the curls first.

Are you going for a blunt cut or some light layers?

I'm not in agreement with most posters here. I don't think cutting your hair to a more manageable length is a terrible idea at all. You have an active baby and that should be your focus...enjoying time with your little one. Not worrying about and fussing over your hair. The hair will grow back. That's simply going to happen. If shorter hair is going to make your life easier/better/less stressful, then cut. I do agree that a little at a time is worth considering if you are unsure about how short to go. But if you know...go for it!

The feeling of longer hair giving you headaches and taking a long time to wash is one I can relate to. When my hair got to BSL and a bit below BSL, even my cinnamon bun was hurting me when I did not have it done just the way my scalp liked it to be done and the cinnamon bun was the only updo I could get to hold when walking around. I think sometimes it is freeing when we have our hair cut shorter and it sounds like you are at the point where having your hair cut shorter would make me you feel freer. Trust me, you do not know how much your hair control your life until you have 8" - 10" of your hair cut off (which is probably what I had cut off when I had my hair cut from a bit below BSL to about mid neck). I say go for it.

I did that when my youngest daughter was born for all the very same reasons you have stated. I went from TBL to above shoulders and it was just so much easier for me during that time. Honestly, I did not regret it at all. Now, 9 years later, I am back to almost WL with layers to reduce the weight of it. I have been seriously growing it out for the last 6 months or so. Before that, was more just pure laziness. Now, I have much more time to take care of it properly and enjoying it. Do what feels right for you!

I have always chopped my hair off with each of my two children to bellow shoulders - from waist or longer. At the time, it felt good for the first few months but then i realised that my hair dosnt behave at all at that kind of length so i WISH i went to at least BSL first and even better, i wish i knew of this site to teach me other ways of keeping my hair up. I always had my hair in a pony tail, no matter the length because even at chin length, the kids still managed to hang off it. So i agree with the once who said to do gradual chops, so go back to waist...MBL...BSL... and see where it feels the best OR just cut it all off, its your hair you are the boss!

It's hard for me to understand your reasons, because I've never had hair that long or had a baby. When I try to imagine it, it doesn't seem to me that APL hair would be that much easier to care for and put up, to be bluntly honest. But it's your hair, you know it better than anyone else.

Just make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. We all get the itch to chop every now and then (especially when PMSing or going through some other hormonal storm). And what may seem perfectly well justified and needed at the time, becomes a regret when the itch has gone away. A big chop can also be driven by desire to make a change (or acknowledge a change) in life and sometimes hair becomes a symbolic target. Just a few things to think about.

I love your hair but it is you that needs to be happy with it! It's on YOUR head!!

I would advice you to think it through carefully, try to find a good stylist that is experienced in curly hairs (so that when you are decided your new cut will be GORGEOUS!) and maybe take some professional pictures of you and your lovely hair as well :) They can be fun to have as inspiration when you are ready to grow again!

A friend of mine is a photographer and I have already promised him he will be allowed to take pictures of me and my hair when it's long enough, he wants it for the artistic value and to add to his portfolio and I want it for memories and also vanity haha!

Oh and also, kiss that baby a lot, I am sure you already do both all babies need a ton of kisses!! :)
It's your child that is most important - you need to feel that you are abe to cope with your baby as you need to without having to hassle with hair, it will grow back but babies grow up!

To me, it seems a haircut would be a great idea, especially if its literally causing you pain. As time passes and the little ones require less constant attention, your hair will be creeping its way back to your dream lengths, but not too soon. =)

I agree with Islandgrrl.

Also, I had mid-back hair and was getting scalp pain and headaches every day and no change of parting or braids/buns would help. I cut back to above shoulder with layers and after two days for my hair to adjust, no more pain at all. I don't recommend layers though. Makes it incredibly difficult to tie up now at a length where I could otherwise manage it easily. Your hair will grow back, and it will still be beautiful at APL.

It seems to me, that you really want to cut your hair. If that is the case, just go and do it. It will be easier to care for, and by the time your child gets bigger, your hair can grow back. It's just hair after all. If it's giving you that much trouble, you should cut it and be done with it. It'll grow back. I cut my hair from BSL to chin this summer. Now I'm growing it out. I haven't regretted it. :)

I hear you! I cut my hair with each child because of hair pulling, rice-cereal-coated little hands, dirty diapers, etc. And since I hadn't the money nor the time (babysitters???) to get properly trimmed I always ended up looking shaggy and unkempt. Which was depressing as I was already feeling neglected in my marriage. So I looked like a neglected discouraged young mom with little kids. :(

But headaches are not acceptable. Make sure that whatever length you choose you can tie back securely - that makes such a difference in caring for the young.

Before you cut, do take some great pictures, because your hair is lovely, my dream hair which I will never have being a straight/fine/thin type.

(The most comfortable updo I've ever had was the crown braid - just a braid wrapped around my head. No weight, no pull, and beautiful. You might try this before chopping - or if your hair's too thick, make two braids and wrap them opposite directions.)

Sounds like you really want to cut. My input would be cut to slightly below BSL. I think your hair is going to have a lot of spring, so that would bring you to BSL dry. My hair is wavy/slightly curly too and during my long hair journey from bob to waist, apl was actually my least favorite length. But that's just me! It felt kind of wide and poufy all the time. I found that it just started to lay better at bsl and I had more styling options. Best of luck, and please take pictures!

First, I would like to give a BIG THANKS to everyone who has responded. Reading your replies has really helped me while I think about what I want to do.

For the record though, my hair doesn't look like those pictures everyday. In fact, I think that is the only time it has looked that good in months ;) That is why I took a ton of pictures. Yeah, the pictures seriously took my breath away - that was my hair? But I worked hard for it, I specially washed, plopped soaking wet with tons of curling custard, replopped before bed, slept plopped, let it dry on the way to work...(I know it doesn't sound difficult, but it's hard to keep something on your head cosleeping and breastfeeding all night for some reason). I tried to recreate it for second day hair yesterday - it was a mess. Looked wet and overgelled and not curly. So it got pulled back. I didn't have time for all the plopping/drying - if it were shorter it would dry much faster, I believe.

Anyway, as I reflect on it and think about it, I really think I want to cut it. I know it will grow back, I'm short so it seems like it grows back fast if I don't like it. I asked DH the other day what he thought I should do, and his response was "you keep talking about it, I really think it's what you want".

Everyone who has taken the time to listen and respond you guys have been great, I really appreciate all your kind words and support!

Well, my stylist decided we could go slow, we cut to just skirting waist with layers to BSL wet, it is BSL dry with layers to APL dry. I am quite happy.

I can still do buns and it is still long, but much lighter. I will get pics after I wash it next time.

Hi, I have four children and although my hair was apl to bsl with the first two it was only shoulder length with the last two. I found that hair length made no difference whatsoever and if they're gonna grab it they're gonna grab it lol. If I was you I would cut a few inches off only and see how you go. You have lovely thick hair so I can imagine it would get heavy.

Well, it's your hair and your decision.
I'm a mom of 4, two of whom have additional needs. I've always found shorter hair to be more hassle than longer, and I personally find that my hair is my 'me time' and part of my identity outside of that of a mother. That blissful moment when I spare 5 minutes before bed to unbraid and re-braid....ooooh some days that thought keeps me going ;)

Buuuuut as I said, it's no one else's decision but yours, and if you truly want shorter hair I'm sure you'll be happy with it :)

I see you've gone for the chop! Looking forwards to pictures :) and very glad you're happy.

I understand your struggle. It can be hard to deal with long hair and being a new Mom. Congrats on your new baby!
I have three children and have always ended up doing a big chop after each one and then ended up regretting it. I personally feel (for myself) that I would have liked it better if I had only taken off a few inches at a time.
Maybe you could take a few inches and then see how you feel?

YAY!!!

I was going to say cut it off because you didn't seem happy about it too. I have twins, and when they were 9 months my hair was around APL and honestly it drove me INSANE, changing diapers with whispy hair on my face was a nightmare, your choice of length IMO is perfect, you can put it out of the way.

I'm on a similar boat too, as it grows I realize I think tailbone is my preferred length, the length I will go back if I ever cut it once I reach my goal. Nothing wrong with having a preferred length at all.

Well when I go back and look at it, waist has always been (except when I considered going for classic) where I like to be. I only ended up so much longer due to benign neglect :)

I will admit, I want it to be a SMIDGE longer, but in a month or two it will be there, simply because the shortest bits in the front come out of a low braid when I sleep. Otherwise, it is quite ideal and I plan to keep it around this length or an inch or so longer.

No more hair induced headaches, btw!

It looks very beautiful. And the inch will come fast :)
if this will make the pain go away that makes me really happy for you.
Congratulations on getting a great cut and having such an understanding stylist.

It does look beautiful.

For others struggling with heavy headache inducing hair, as mine is randomly, try double buns or braids. Each has half the weight and it really helped me. Plus it's an excuse to keep two shorter sticks. ;)

As for little hands, I only knew braids then. They were great until I put Arlo in a backpack. Then they became reins.

Ouch. So I learned my first updo of sorts by folding the braid and clamping a barrette over it.
Years later, he and I were in a restaurant. He got up from the table ahead of me, and I grabbed his braid, waved it and said giddy up.
We both cracked up. (He's heard the stories)
