So hubby wants to dye his hair, and I'm in complete agreement that if he wants to then he should lol he wants it that beautiful shade of blonde that (actors name is eluding me!) Thor has...who am I to argue I love the color and think it would look great on him..biased cause I like blondes hehe.

But i am concerned about damaging it badly, His hair is nearly APL, and straight and I would be heartbroken if it got badly damaged and have to be cut off!, I KNOW i am going to have to bleach it, but what level of bleach would get him light enough for a dye to take correctly, also any recommendations for box dyes that could get the color he's wanting? I'll be doing this at home no way we can afford a salon.

this is his hair color : (I have his permission to post this highly unflattering picture taken like 5 1/2 years ago lol I'm shocked that I do not have any recent photos of him and he wouldnt appreciate me waking him at 2 in the morning to take one hehe.) The camera flash made it look lighter then it is, its actually a dark brown)

This is what we are shooting for (Except yano washed and clean lol)

It's Chris Hemsworth who played Thor :p, and the only reason I know that is because my friend had the biggest crush on him. My only advice on bleaching would be to look up how to properly bleach hair, because done wrong it can make your hair straw.

I don't know how much to use but i remember a hairdresser friend of mine saying that if you bleach your own hair do it from the tip to the roots, not the other way round because then the heat from your head warms that bleach in the roots quicker and it turns out uneven.
Not much help, sorry, just the only thing I can remember. There must be youtube videos about this? I learn everything from youtube :)

Good luck.

I have heard it suggested here that you should look into when to slather it with coconut oil, and then keep it nice and conditioned, to help prevent the straw. Also, shop around for a stylist who's good at dying hair.

I would get a highlight kit rather than bleach hubby's whole head. If you look at the photo of Chris Hemsworth there are dark and light portions.

Yeah, it really looks more like heavy highlights than an all over blond. Plus, highlights are easier to grow out when you want to (and he will want to).

I agree with the highlights suggestion. They would give him a more natural look. Since his hair is not too dark, you could use a highlight kit (I'm not very sure, but I think it has normal dye) so you won't damage his hair so bad. If you use coconut oil in the mix it could give him more strong results and avoid damage too.

Completely cover all of the hair in coconut oil for at least an hour before bleaching since then bleach directly onto the oil. I highlight my hair and this prevents damage. That's where my advice end I'm afraid as I've never bleach with a box kit, only at the salon

So Iwent with a full head bleach application, boxed ash blonde dye and highlights, we're still on stage 2 of this process, did the bleach, now the dyes in, then the highlights.

HOLY CRAP AM I JEALOUS. Even after the bleach his hair is soft as silk and shiny, I guess it helps that he only washes his hair once a month, and he never conditions or anything like that, no hair products either. It also probably helped that his hair was 100% virgin hair, he's never dyed or bleached it before.

I'm still soooo jealous my hair would have been straw after one bleaching (Even on my virgin hair!)

I'll post a pic of his hair when its done :)

So no highlights were needed, it ended up more golden then i had intended but hey I still love how it turned out! and theres only a small bit of damage at the ends of his hair, but its still silky o0 the color is slightly dark in the pics due to him getting fed up with the blowdrying (it is 1 in the morning and he's tired), so its not 100% dry lol

His hair doesn't look damaged, good work. The color is very uniform, but it makes a big contrast with his beard. I don't recomend you to mess around with the beard, but you can always do "darker highlights" (sorry if it's the wrong expression, can't find out another better), so he'll have a more natural look :)

ooh i'll have to try to convince him to let me do the lowlights, I put in a toner this morning and it took out some of the golden tones that were driving him mad, but i dont know if he will let me do anything more to it hehe i'll give him a couple days to adjust and let him decide then
