Has anyone figured out how to do the blonde girl's bun from the movie "Frozen"? It looks like a braided bun, but with a twist down one side and this weird not-parted-but-the-hair-is-swept-sideways-over-her-scalp thing going on.

Has anyone figured it out? I'd love a tutorial. Pics would be nice.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I saw a scene online with that "Let it Go" song. I think seeing her take the hair out would be a clue on how it's styled. Here's the video:

I have no idea but now I really want to see that movie!!!

I noticed how at the beginning, her bun bounced around a little like it was done loosely. Nice attention to detail, animators!

I also found this clip. The ginger girl has some pretty hair, too! Looks like a crown braid with hair pulled over the bottom and then the loose hair put in a bun. Must experiment!

Found one more clip. It shows a nice back view of the ginger girls bun! Both of these ladies have the same hair length as me, so I need to learn these styles!

OMG!!! Just an hour ago I kept looking back at pictures from "Frozen". And I really want a white streak now!!

And the braids are so pretty! They look so big and loose.

I JUST NOTICED! The blonde girl's bun is held with HAIR TAPING! That's why it's loose and bouncy! Also why she could take her bun down so quickly (and magic). Details, details!

This IS a cartoon, right? So, they could make hair anyway they want, doing anything they want in such a manner real humans could never get their real hair to do?

Doesn't this make it an ultimate challenge? To create a hairstyle that doesn't technically exist?!

Actually, that hairstyle is fairly simple to achieve, provided you had the right length (WL minimum) and thickness/density (iii). Those with less thickness can create the same look with hair thickening pomade or clip ins. If you look at the way she partially undid the hairstyle in the first clip, it works this way:

1) Brush your hair loosely to one side and start making a side roll/flat twist, starting from the temple on the side opposite to the side your hair was brushed to. Here (http://youtu.be/8jprlex0HjI) is a good video on how to do a side roll.

2) When your roll has reached the majority of your side-swept hair, pin the end of the side roll so it won't come undone.

3) Gather all the hair to the side behind your ear. Braid it into a loose, fat braid down the length of your hair, then secure with a hair tie.

4) Roll, tuck and pin the braid into a loose bun towards the back of your head, and you're done. :)

Ooh, I just watched Frozen last night! The blonde is Elsa the Snow Queen, and the ginger/auburn/strawberry-blonde is her sister Anna. Personally, I love how Anna went from her cute and elaborate crown braid into more practical pigtails for 90% of the movie. REALISTIC HAIRSTYLES FOR THE WIN!

Also I tried Elsa's hairstyle on my sister last night and yes, it's a side-roll to the left that ends in a braided bun. Their mother has a very similar hairstyle with a side-roll into a bun.

The thing I found out about her hair being so loose and bouncy:
1) As mentioned, Elsa's hair uses taping, which helps with definition.
2) When you start at the right temple, you pull hair from the right side as well as the left side. The hair-taping probably helps to keep it in place. Me and my sister tried the style without taping and it looked really nice, but it relaxed way too much after just a few minutes.

I'd love to see recreations and post my own attempts later.

Okay, here is my sad attempt at this do. Now mind you, my hair is not nearly as long or as thick to get an exact recreation, and I did not use hair taping (my texture does not require that kind of security), but I think I did okay. My hair is very dark, so sorry if you don't see as much detail. Here is the roll with braid:

Here is the pinned style:

And here it is from the back. Sorry the detail is so bad (darn my phone's camera!), but you can see the roll I made in my hair a little better:

I apologize in advance if the pictures are ginormous :(

And yeah, my mirror is very smudgy, so sorry for that too.

I really liked Frozen, saw it twice and preferred the 3D version more because of the snow effects. Haha, I sat in the 3rd row just so I can see how Elsa did her bun up close. From what I saw, her hair is in a seashell bun in a rope braid style. I thought the blue pieces looked like spin pins like when they are in place, I don't know, they reflected light like how metal does. I also noticed that Anna and Elsa had realistic hair thickness too, throughout the hairstyles. I appreciated that, it wasnt thickness on steroids.Yesterday, I did Elsa's bun and followed the seashell bun instructions on YouTube and got the results very closely. I added a part because it was easier for me. But yeah, rope braid in a seashell bun. Tell me what you folks think.

That movie is SO GOOD. Strong, independent female characters, and a twist on one of the classic fairy tale tropes that literally got a cheer from me in the theater for its ingenuity and empowerment.

And yes, the HAIR IS SO BEAUTIFUL. Also the clothes. And also the snow/ice/frost effects. Most definitely the hair, though! I thought of all of you when I saw it, I'm so happy to see this thread here.

I also noticed hair taping, and also there was a beautiful detail of dime-sized sparkly snowflakes here and there on Elsa's hair that got me thinking about little spin-pin hair decoration possibilities along braids and such.

GO see it! The music is amazing, the story is beautiful, there are some seriously amazing surprises... and then there's the fabulous nonspeaking reindeer character who is ADORBS. Oh and a comic relief magically-animated snowman who *isn't* completely obnoxious and puerile, and who I grew to quite adore by the end as well. I KNOW, RIGHT?

Hello, my lovelies! I had a go, but more along the lines of making it as quick to take down as possible whilst still looking somewhat like the original (so, no, I didn't do hair-taping because that takes time to undo) than going for copy-perfect. I didn't do a seashell bun because I don't know what it is. Here's the thing - I used ONE pin - that mega silver thing that's actually a bent double-pointed knitting needle (which probably comes in blue somewhere in the world). That "roll"-ish bit was a pain though.
Please excuse the disgusting hair - I'm due to wash it tonight. Also the dodgy bit where my face should be - it's all the face-covering-up I can do on the ipad.
Pictures should be clickable.

I did it by making a French braid with 4 -sections on each side VERY loose, like never touching my head kind of loose. The last section I tightened up to normal-loose, then braided to the ends. I then tossed my head to one side and smoothed everything (I.e the braid) to one side and slightly up with my fingers. Had my hair not been in such a mess I would have smoothed with the BBB. That leaves you with one smooth side, and one pile of hair on the other. This is the bit that's a pain, but I twirl the big hanging side into something slightly resembling a roll, push up ever so slightly and roll the last bit really tightly, and pin the loop tightly underneath the roll. Bun the rest of the braid, smoothing as you go. That massive pin then goes through the outside loop and the braid-end, under the rest of the bun, through the loop the other pin is in, under the roll, and out the other side of the bun. Take out that pin you put in earlier under the roll because the big one is there now.
As for the quick take-down:
Take out the pin, give my head a shake, and I get this - the roll unwinding and getting a super loose, very bouncy French braid that pieces of hair at my hairline keep falling out of.

If this twist is the one I'm thinking about, me and at least two-thirds of the theater gasped when it happened. You could hear it from EVERY SEAT. I knew it was coming because I accidentally spoiled myself from TV Tropes, but it was still just so awesomely horrific to see it happen in front of me. Good job, Disney!

Oh yes. I thought Olaf was obnoxious in the trailers as well, but I'm so thankful that they released "Let It Go" before the movie came out, and that my love of Broadway won over my caution about the Obnoxious Slapstick Snowman. Olaf is much less slapstick in the actual movie, and both the writers and the actor had PERFECT comedic timing.

And more gushing over Idina Menzel, anyone? Watching Elsa raise her ice castle to "Let It Go" gave me chills. Pun definitely intended. My only problem is that they had Jonathan Groff and they only gave him an adorable, goofy "Reindeer are better than people" song. They missed the chance for an awesome tenor.

It was a great movie.
One of the things I first noticed in the movie was the hair, and with seeing that quick take-down my brain was whirring all night to figure out a close approximation that works like that.

Yes, we had gasps as well! DH and I agreed after we left the theater that Disney really is trying to adopt some of Pixar's excellent storytelling habits, and 'Frozen' is a magnificent example of that.

The movie also preyed upon my pre-existing longing for a silver streak in my hair, and amped it up to 11 though.

I gave it a try and tried to do it looser, since my hair is so compact and tiny when done tightly.
It's okay in a messy way.

The same people who worked on Tangled also did Frozen, so it doesn't surprise me that the hair animations were so good.

And didn't the Tangled crew have someone here from LHC as their hair model? I seem to recall that one of our very own LHC members went to the Disney studio to help them study how real long hair moves for their animation team.

I loved Let It Go too. Fantastic song, wonderful animations. The animation team went to the Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel) in Quebec City to study how ice forms. You can tell when you watch Elsa raise her ice castle. Even the colours are the same as some of the colours from the light displays in the Hôtel de Glace.

I saw it today and I think I figured out how to do the hairstyle. I did two twists, one in and one out then a normal bun with one twist wrapped around the other. I was planning to a video tomorrow and upload it to YouTube. I can post a link if people are interested.

Silvousplaits has got a tutorial up, it's not 100% accurate (the bun is wrong) but it is a good simple version for those of us who lack fancy bun skills. (I have no idea what this seashell bun some of you have mentioned is!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtgR2yXGFwo

ETA: I've done this, and if you braid the ponytailed hair it looks a bit closer to the original. My attempt looks OK, as my twist is a little small and went kind of funny.

PrincessIdril: A seashell bun is generally a bunned fishtail/herringbone braid. A bunned herringbone has a really different effect from a normal braid due to all the tiny sections.
