Yes, it can damage the strands that get tied to the tinsel. It's only a few strands, so I don't worry about it.

I get mine from princess-sunny-shop on ebay. They are located in Thailand, so shipping takes a while.

There's loads on eBay :) you just tie it to a few strands of hair. Unless you rip it out when removing it, I can't see much damage happening.
