View Full Version : Looking For Easy Hairstyle Ideas After Injury

So, about three days ago, I injured (we're not quite sure to the extent yet) my right shoulder and it has been rather difficult to style my hair at all since I'm having to wear a sling keeping my right arm immobilized at all times. Are there any "easy" hairstyle ideas anyone can suggest for someone without full range of motion in both arms? The hand I have available is my left, but I'm very strongly right-handed, so this is also creating quite a conflict! The normal styles I've done in the past are pretty difficult without causing severe pain (I attempted to do a braided bun and it took nearly an hour!)

My hair is down to tailbone length right now, very thick and heavy, plus I have a rather sensitive scalp (can't use just hairsticks, too much pain to have the weight only centered in one location).

The main reason I'm asking is because I have to go back to work this weekend and I can't wear my hair down without it catching on everything, so any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Aside from possibly having someone help you, how about a side braid? Just swing everything over one shoulder and do all the braiding action in front. That was one of the easiest things to do when I was out of commission for a while. I hope your injury isn't too serious and heals soon!

Is your right arm completely inmobilized? Can you move the hand at least? Because in this case I would suggest you use a braid on the left side of your head. It haven't to be tight on the top. A segmented ponytail could be and option too. I hope you get better soon :)

My arm is, yes, but I can move my hand. I can't grip too much, but I seem to be able to do some braiding, just not very well.

I was recently in a similar situation, only I couldn't use the hand at all. During that time, despite significant efforts, I found that I couldn't do anything with my hair at all except brush it. My only choice was to teach my boyfriend how to put my hair in a nautilus bun.

Once I could use the hand a little, I was able to twist my hair up into a bun with my good hand, hold it in place for a moment with the injured hand, and clamp with a ficcare. My ficcare was kind of the mvp during that stage because of how easy it is to use with one hand and how solidly it holds.

I would also suggest a braid, maybe teach your SO to braid so they can help you til you can flip it over your shoulder?

I was in a similar position last year when I injured my right hand and it was splinted for the best part of 4 months. The only thing I could wear was a low ponytail, unless my mum helped me, in which case it was just a simple braid.

Oh, boy, endlessly, I'm right there with you. My right wrist (I'm also right-handed) has been in a cast for the last month and my gripping ability is limited. I've been just wearing my hair down and using a small plastic claw clip to pull back the front bits, but I'm only MBL length (around 30"). I know from another thread that Torrin Paige has some Youtube videos for one-handed styles, but I've not looked them up. Let us know if you find a good solution!

Also, I don't know if you type a lot for work, but I have discovered during all this that Dragon Naturally Speaking is WAY better dictation software than the built-in stuff that comes with Windows 7. It is totally worth the money if your hand is going to be out of commission more than a few days.

Feel better!
