So the other night I was out with friends having dinner. We started talking about hair and one said that a lady at work had started to use products called mane n tail and had experienced huge growth in a short time...my friend called it HORSE shampoo and I have looked at it online and it looks like it is for horses and humans?!
Has anyone tried it or heard of it? I have a link for it online but I wasn't sure whether we are allowed to do that on here? (Sorry this is my first post so im still leaning!)

Sounds like mane and tail. Lots of people here use it though I have never tried. It's in the hair care isle of the grocery store.

When i was younger i used to use it and my thick hair enjoyed it! I had nothing to complain. Oh, these memories.... now i´m tempted to try it again. ^^

Mane and tail is very popular here actually, I would warn you that these products are very high in protein, most people use them infrequently because it causes protein overload. I would advise you to alternate this shampoo with a protein free one and use a very moisturising conditioner

I looked up the ingredients of mane 'n tail. There's nothing special, maybe except the hydrolyzed collagen. So I can not believe it could make your hair grow any faster.

I used to use it since I liked the smell. (I'm not into the overly flowery stuff!) I found it was really much too harsh and made my hair quite dried out and more tangled.

Mane and tail is EXTREMEMLY popular where I'm from ... every girl who tries to grow out her hair uses it ( you can even get it at wal mart) .... it's protein based so I tried it then through it out

I bought horse shampoo at Wall Mart. My hair wouldn't grow past mid back until my fifty's. I added two capfuls of olive oil to my shampoo. My hair grew twelve Inches to waist. Now it's just past hip. It doesn't work for everybody. But I hope it work's for you. The olive oil makes your hair soft, and maybe it helped
with the growth.

Mane n tail was my favorite shampoo and conditioner. I love it and when I used it my hair did grow. I had to buy cheaper due to budget changes. I would recommend trying it you might like it. I do have a word of caution it's loaded with protein. Make sure your hair likes protein first.

For me the Mane N Tail shampoo was too strong even when diluted but I love the Mane N Tail conditioner. I put it on my hair after shampooing and leave it on for about one minute and then rinse well with warm/cool water.
I use other conditioners as my regular conditioners and use the Mane N Tail maybe once every month or two.
I bought a large bottle of it two years ago and I probably have about half left!

I used it when I had long hair which loves protein. I especially liked the moisturising conditioner (blue bottle I think). When I moved to Europe I simply couldn't find it anymore.

Castor oil is more effective I think but messierI bought some castor oil but I found it was really hard to shampoo it out of my hair. The thing with Mane n Tail is that it has sulfates which can be harsh. I used it sparingly.

it has loads of protein. I don't think it increases growth
dreamingstar
November 30th, 2013, 06:40 PM
It can't increase growth because it can't affect the follicle and your natural rate of growth. But it can protect against hair breakage by preventing protein loss. Because it is so full of protein, it could easily overload it and cause some really annoying issues. Personally I've not tried it, but most people that I know of who have have had mixed feelings about it.

Because of the protein it has the same or similar effect of castor oil. I don't think it affects the growth rate. It makes hair stronger yes. However my hair always loved protein treatments but you have to balance the protein with moisture, otherwise the hair becomes a bit "crisp"

I used to use it and unfortunately was not one of the lucky ones. It also dried out my hair due to the harsh sulfates and heavy protein content. I am verrry protein sensitive my hair hates it. I gave it a full shot too.. Almost finished those huge bottles!
But others swear by it!

I had forgotten about that stuff!! I used it years ago when I grew my hair out the first time and it made my hair feel like silk! I used it once a week on "wash day" and then put a protein pack I got from Sally's called "For Perms Only" on my hair. (don't know if they still make it) Then I covered it with a shower cap and sat under one of those dome shaped old fashioned hair dryers with the heat setting on low. I had shiny, silky, same length hair just past my rear with no splits. Now that I remember it I just have to have it. Off to WalMart!!

I love mane and tail! I've not used it on myself but I borrowed a friend's spray on my cob's tail. It's always so thick and course and tangly and this time of year it's covered i nmud.. but a few spritz of this stuff and it felt like silk! I'd love to have some for myself, at least if it didnt work for me my horse can use it so it's not a total waste of money!
On the bottle it says to only use once a week at the most, and that's for hair a lot tougher than ours, so it's only common sense that to use it on human hair, you should only use it once a fortnight or so.
Should probably clarify here, I'm talking about Canter Mane and Tail Conditioner Spray, not the bottles of shampoo xD

Mane and Tail has six different shampoo formulas, many cone free. You can check them out here http://manentail.com/products/ (just put your cursor over the "shampoos" or "conditioners" box and it will drop down to list the different ones). Most have only tried the Original.

Water, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine Lactate, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Stearyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax NF, Cetyl Alcohol, Coconut Oil, Glycerin, Sodium Chloride, Vegetable Oil, Fragrance, Hydrolyzed Protein, Lanolin, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, F D & C Yellow #5
Without researching every ingredient, I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. There are a couple of cationic surfactants (which cleanse as well as condition) which are needed for CO. The actual success would be determined by how your hair reacts to ingredients like glycerin, lanolin, and protein.

I don't know about the other formulas, I only have "Original" and it's cone free. I was reading some Amazon reviews and noticed that 32oz bottle listed cones in the ingredients while the 12oz didn't...

yeah I used to use it when I was little. Like 7 years old and I'm pretty sure I loved it. I haven't used it sense. Yeah I think it was originally a horse shampoo but it works great for humans too. I probably well try it again some day.

Sorry about so late replying, I couldn't find the thread. It took about 7 years, started growing from a bob. I wound up donating it all to Locks of Love before I learned what the deal was with them. I am on my second time growing long, again from a bob. Hair is about two inches past "butt crack level" now. I have been growing for about 7 years this time, too. Had been using different stuff like Dove and such til I found this thread talking about Mane and Tail. I started using it again two days after I posted here and I can really tell a difference. I have been maintaining this current length for several months so my ends won't be so "see through", I had thicker hair almost to my waist, then there was a bunch of longer hair that went to the two inches past point. It is getting very close to being the same length now. I used to be able to see my clothes through the bottom several inches up to a few inches above waist and now I can only see through it up to the bottom of the belt loops of my jeans. I have trimmed about 1/4 inch off the ends twice since December 3, 2013 and the see through part is filling in fast. My hair just grows faster with Mane and Tail. I also started using the protein packs again and I think that has helped a lot with the overall health of my hair. I don't think I will ever use another shampoo/conditioner ever again!

What you're talking about is Mane n' Tail, it's not just for horses, they have directions for human use too. Lol
I use mane n' tail, I havent been using it that long but I bought it specifically because I heard great things about hair growth.
I'm not sure if it has yet because I've only used it for about 3 washes but so far it defines my curls well and has made my hair shiner and softer.
It's a pretty good shampoo/condish.
You can use the conditioner as a leave in as well so theres a plus.

I used it for about 3 months? It was fine shampoo, but there was waaaay too much protein involved. My hair was drier because of it, and I didn't notice any extreme hair growth miracles. Maybe it was just because I was washing it so often.
Anyways, I think it's a fine shampoo/conditioner, but it's not worth all the hype.

I've always loved the smell, too! My hair is a little protein-sensitive, so I haven't tried using it in a while, but now I'm getting nostalgic for the smell... :hmm:

I used the Straight Arrow brand in my salon for years. It worked for every woman I tried it on. Not so much for bald men for some reason, though, although for a few it did help. It is too heavy to leave in in my opinion. It will build up quickly if not thoroughly rinsed. It somehow stops sheading too. I am a firm believer in the stuff and it was the only non professional product in the shop. Everything else was Paul Mitchell. One side effect is extremely long nails.
Edited because I only used the conditioner in the salon. I have used the shampoo at home with the conditioner.

I think it is a myth. Plus if you use it too much you can get too much protein. That's what happened to my hair and I had to clarify and use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

I used 'Horsey Tail' shampoo as a child for years.
Recently purchased again and that smell brings back great memories. I use regular conditioner ( the conditioner was too expensive to buy with the shampoo!) and have no issues. My hair seems to enjoy the protein.

I use Main and Tail (original). I throw a bottle of the conditioner into my rotation now and then and I love the smell (not too perfume) and it feels nice. I used to wash my dog with it now and then. It won't make your hair grow any faster but it doesn't seem like anything will unless you're you either add a major factor you were missing or remove one that was stunting your growth, unfortunately.

My hair was stuck at just past mid back since high school. In 2009 at age 53 I bought Original Mane & Tail shampoo from Wall Mart. In 2010 it grew 14 inches to waist.I put two cqpfuls of olive oil in the shampoo to help possible growth. Now it's at hip. It doesn't work for everybody. But it's worth a try.

I'm surprised the discussion here has been about Mane 'n' Tail.... The last horse product hair growth obsessive phenomenon I knew of was a protein laden conditioner called Mega-Tek.
Yes, I'm skeptical. I also suspect that even if it did work, my hair would hate it.

i use it but only like once in the 10 days-2 weeks, it is certainly to harsh for daily or weekly use. but if i use it now and then it gives my hair a really nice oomph, im not using it for the growth which i never tracked when i started using it, i use it when i want to have a volume day :-)

When I grew my hair out when I was 18 I used it and I guess it worked for me. My hair was really shiny and smooth and grew a lot! Pretty sure within a year or year and a half I was at waist from shoulder length hair. Apparently it worked so well my mom and grandma were asking what I used and when I told them they bought their selves a couple bottles. They ended up not sticking with it though because they prefer the more commercial products. I haven't used it since but I think I will go buy some to try again. My hair seems thin at the ends and just blah lol. I also loved the smell. If Walmart is sold out I know walgreens has it.

My hair responded to Mane n' Tail with more courseness, no noticeable growth,of course more need for moisture -due to the complicated regimen, alcohols, sea water; etc.
I definately have seen people/a male grow their hair out at a rate faster than mine in about a years time.. (he says putting in egg in it helps..):silly:

My mother loves that shampoo but I don't find it to be anything special. I personally find it extremely drying.
I highly doubt that it causes huge growth spurts, though. Your growth rate is entirely genetic.

I used it once upon a time, my hairdresser suggested it to make my hair thicker (haha). Needless to say Mane N Tail did nothing but make my hair smell like mayonnaise and dry it out. At least that's what it smelled like to me.

Mane and tail has a great leave in spray detangler that I'm never without a few bottles of. I tried snd was not a fan of this brsnds shampoo and conditioner. Currently hooked on suave tropical sunshine. Tho at times I CO only; with a conditioner just for CO only: called "I Am".

My curls really come to life with MNT...although it does build up and I have to clarify every other week. After I clarify my hair feels REALLY soft, so it can't be doing anything too bad. After all, on the bottle of conditioner it says " texturizer", so I guess it's not supposed to give your hair a really silky finish. It's supposed to make it more manageable. For me, it does this quite well. Perhaps, I should use it occasionally since my hair does like protein...but not THAT much apparently.

If you're talking about Mane n Tail, I bought some a few months ago and for me, the shampoo is great! For me it's like a clarifying shampoo, keeps my hair build up free. As for the conditioner, it's pretty much all protein and it gives my hair protein overload since I don't really have damage right now. So I use the conditioner on my dog and his fur loves it!!

I have seen Mane and Tail do amazing things. It is too heavy and waxy to leave in like it says on the bottle but if you will rub it into your scalp really well and then rinse really well it works magic. Rubbing it on the ends will not make it grow faster or thicker you have to get it on the scalp.

I don't find it anything amazing as a long term use product but the conditioner is great for a protein treatment. I love love their "hoofmaker" cream for hands and nails though. That stuff works as advertised. A different horse hair care line I use and do recommend is Ecrinal. I like every product I have used and when I am using it all ritually my hair does grow faster and better quality. As in the roots are a different texture and each hair thicker when I keep track of new growth.
