View Full Version : Cut two inches to even out layers or leave it be?

Decisions decisions...
My layers are driving me crazy! They don't look bad down, but they make my braids look messy and make updos a pain in the butt. My longest layer is just past BSL (27in) and my shortest layer is APL. It would take a 2-3 inch cut to get rid of most of the layers. I'm horrified at the thought of losing 6 months of growth and it would make my goal of waist (maybe hip?) even further away.
Will my layers become less of a problem for updos as it gets longer? Should I wait it out?
oh and my ends are in good condition, so no need to cut for that reason.

Ahhh i couldnt imagine going back again, I'm just slowly passing BSL now and i could do with a trim to even up my hemline as well but ive decided to wait it out until i get to waist before i start mantaining. Cheers

Why not microtrim? I haven't done it yet, but that's my plan for my layers. I'm at waist now and my shortest layers are APL. I don't want to loose my length but I want to reduce the layers. Could be an option for you too!

It depends how much it's annoying you. Maybe do a half inch or an inch trim to see if that improves it? Otherwise just growing, or growing with microtrimming would be fine. Since the hair doesn't grow evenly at the same rate it's common to always have bits sticking out of braids anyway.

I was in your shoes a while ago. I had all these icky layers and I was at BSL. My shortest layers were at SL. I was slowly microtrimming them away, but the progress was much too slow for my liking and I wasn't really even gaining any length as I kept trimming so often. Then I just grabbed the scissors and cut off about 4 inches of my hair, which got rid of most of my layers. I honestly can say I don't regret cutting it at all. Yeah, I'm back at APL but I'm enjoying the thickness and not having icky looking layers so much more.
What it really boils down to is this. What's more important to you? Having long hair with layers you don't love? Or shorter hair without the layers?
You could also do something in the middle too, maybe trim an inch off or microtrim. That will help if you're not wanting to let go of so much growth.

I think you shouldn't cut so much at once. I actually thing layers are cool, but if you really need to get rid of them... Maybe you can cut up to one inch - the difference will be less noticeable.

I finally grew my layers out and I trimmed a little as they grew. When they reached the point where they were almost grown out I cut the rest off.

Since I don't like layers in my hair and APL is the minimum length I'd be willing to tolerate, I'd cut.

I've been cutting mine out slowly over the course of a year. Usually I'll trim 1/2 inch every 3 months (that gives me about 1 inch of growth every 3 months.) I only have a few more inches of the most annoying ones to go and they have not gotten easier to braid into braids and things.
I suppose it depends on whether or not they bother you enough to cut them now or wait it out and slowly microtrim them away every few months.

My dividing line would be "Can I still get my hair up at all?" If I had enough length to cut out most of the layers and still do an updo, I'd cut. If cutting would do away with most updos for awhile, I'd microtrim and wait for more length.

I'm having the same problem (shortest layer is at collarbone in the front, APL in the back; longest is at BSL) right now, but what bothers me isn't so much the 4" difference in length as it is simply the fact that those layers are too short. For me, at least, it's easier to deal with them by tying my braids off several inches from the bottom and doing buns that can handle them than to cut them off and be stuck with a choice of loose, ponytail, or twin French braids.

Thank you for all of your responses. I am going to wait to cut for now. You're right that I might regret it. And I can cut it anytime I want... I can't grow it out that quick. Maybe I'll do a half inch for now

Since they're in good condition and you want to grow to waist+, I'd leave them alone.
I'm no help on the updos but for braiding, try dampening a little, it seems to make those ends cooperate.
