View Full Version : November 2013: Vortex Bun!

It's time for a new style of the month. Get out your hairpins -- you'll want them for this.

Vortex Buns!

Super-spirally versions of cinnamon buns, these can be head-eating. They're also lower-profile than most buns and work even with thick hair that might not be able to make many laps around.

Am I allowed to ask a couple of questions?
First, because my hair is layered it's much thicker at the start of my ponytail than it is toward the end. As a result, the Centre of the bun doesn't look as flat to the head as I think it should. Is this normal, or is there something I should do to prevent it?
Second, my hair seems to be trying to spit the pins out at its thicker part. Is there a good way to prevent them from flying across the room?
Thanks so very much for indulging my confusion.

Oh, I love vortex buns! I haven't done one in a while, though I've been really wanting to do one.
To start us off, here's a couple of old pictures of vortex buns I've done:
Two Hawser braids:

Did my first vortex today. I used torrin's video (thanks) as demonstrated using rope braids to make it. She was right, this bun is Excellent as far as eating up length & staying Put. It also seems better balanced than just coiling it around & clipping into place & my neck doesn't seem as fatigued after hours of wearing it up.
Tomorrow I may try it lower on my head & more of a horizonal oval 'cause I like wearing my hats.

I should try this bun again; I really loved the way it looked, but it took a bit longer to make than I generally prefer. I want to try and get it flatter to my head this time. Anyway, this was taken in February:

Beautiful swirlies, Quixii and sparrowswing! :)

I have a messy vortex bun for you guys, but let's post it anyway. It was my second time trying this hairdo and I think the first one was a lot better... Also in natural light all the shades of dye I'm growing out look really weird against my natural color. I should try a braided version of this bun. I think a fishtail vortex would look really cool!

Is a vortex by definition a certain number of braids? I'm wondering if there is a definitive difference between a vortex, a braided beehive and a rose bun (at least one done with multiple strands?)

I'm gonna have to try it with fish braids though... that sounds amazing!

I think a rose bun is a single bunned rope braid, and I suspect a braided beehive is just the result you get when you can't get your vortex to lay very flat in the center!

Moxamoll, your buns are wonderful!

I don't know about the rose bun, but to me it seems the difference between a 3 braid vortex bun and a 3 braid beehive bun is how you use the braids. For me, the 3 braid beehive was easier, but I enjoyed the challenge of the vortex bun.

What length are you at melesine? If you're at 29" like it says under your name, I'm sure you could make a rockin' vortex! I managed to pull one of these together on a friend who was just past shoulder length- I made six braids instead of my usual three so there was plenty of swirly goodness going on =] I'm sure you could pull off an awesome one with a few tweaks!

I agree on the rose bun, but I think the beehive is what you get when you bun one of the braids, then wrap the next braid around that bun. The vortex has them both/all starting in the center, while the beehive has them building on each other. Very similar effects, and at a glance it can be hard to see any difference at all.

I thought the rose bun was a two rope braid vortex bun, and a beehive had more height somehow, like maybe the braids were stacked on top of eachother instead of wrapping around flat on the head.

Eh, I always thought of a rose bun as a single rope braid, bunned. When I think of a beehive, I think of something that looks like this (http://avastrange.com/2011/11/25/the-beehive/), Amy Winehouse, or Yeoman Rand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janice_Rand). :D

Really? I should read the tutorial more closely. I was just goofing off at home when I tried it just wrapping a single braid into a bun. That's more like a Rose Bun really, I think! I still can't do a decent looking rose bun, but I love the vortex so much that it doesn't really bother me anymore =] I found this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DF5HXky3B8) tutorial really helpful when I was starting out- obviously my hair is about a mile shorter than Torrins, but it's the same sort of process, and I find for shorter hair a few more braids can help get the 'look', so if you're not feeling it with three, try a few more!

ETA: And just for giggles (and to show what a little tweaking and practice can do!) I present to you a little collage of my very first try of a roped vortex, the second done immediately after, and one of my most recent ones =] Yes, I'm a sad act xD

I would love to master this bun because it looks fantastic, but I am totally new to the vortex bun and having major technical difficulties. I've watched several videos and attempted it myself, but it ends up merging into a cinnabun or just a big mess and it doesn't hold. The individual three strands end up blending together and I can't keep them separated about halfway through. Is this just not a good bun for my hair type?

moxamoll
November 18th, 2013, 11:52 AM
I'm not sure what tutorials you are watching. When I was learning it, it was definitely easier to pin as I went, that kept them from merging into just a multi-strand cinnabun. If you are already doing that, I don't have any other suggestions. Hopefully the others can help?

I need more practice. And more hair :)

Wow, there are so many tidy, giant wonderful buns here!
This is my sad attempt on hair that really could use a wash, held with 4 spin pins (because you can see one at the top, even ). Still, for a first go it's ok :)

First attempt at a Vortex bun - two English plaits, held with four spin pins and a smattering of other pins.

It is very messy, and my hair is just about to be washed, but I like how light it feels on my head and how complicated it looks, when it is actually pretty simple!

All of these buns are so pretty! I seriously cannot wait until my hair is long enough to make this one.

Yes, I love this style of bun. I will try to put up one so you can see what it looks like with shorter hair, but I need my husband to take photos and that can take awhile.

Its great for shorter, thick hair as you create sections. I like to use four braids.

Ashke50 that is gorgeous!

This bun really is nice. Holds so solid and looks way more complicated than it is. I love how the style of the month threads make me try things I usually wouldn't.

Thanks :-)

I wore a vortex bun to work today, it was really comfortable and stayed in all day. Thumbs up for the thread of the month!

Did my first Vortex bun! I was feeling ambitious and going to try rope braids but my hair wasn't cooperating so I ended doing three English braids.

My vortex with shorter, curly hair. It's with three braids, and amish pins with buttons on them for decoration.

This picture is a year old as I can not seam to find my hairpins right now to make a new one of this bun. Well here is my first ever vortex bun, with a spider hair fork in it as everything is better with spiders.

Great buns everyone!
I love the hairstyle of the month threads to see the same style in different hairtypes.

Venefica, your hairfork scares ma ;-)

Well I thought I would try out a hairstyle of the month! I tried and learned rope braids then managed to do this with my almost BSL hair. It's not at big as some on here but it is my attempt! (I also find it very hard to take pictures of my hair myself, any tips?!)

Good for you for trying the Vortex Bun, joflakes. It looks nice and a lot more interesting than an ordinary bun.

As far as picture taking, can you photograph yourself in a bathroom mirror? Does your camera have a timer? If you have a tripod, you could set your camera timer then position yourself in front of the timer to get that photo. A bit tricky but its an option.

Thanks :flower:

I tried the bathroom mirror, the thing is that there is no natural light in there so it's not a great place for photos generally. I do however have a timer so I could probably place it somewhere and time it to take a photo :)

I always scout out a couple go-to spots that I can put my camera on timer for hair pictures. Like, my dresser is a good height and place for me to use for hair photos. The kitchen counter which faces my well-lit hallway also works pretty well.
Barring that, I hold the camera aimed at my face, as if I am taking the famed "selfie." Then I turn my head around and snap the picture before I start to move my arm. This usually works to get my bun in the frame, and means I don't have to go find a spot.

Oh cool, I was doing these without knowing what they were called. I thought they were just segmented cinnamon buns, nifty.

Yeah, we are the same length. It's my first time trying out the hairstyle of the month, too and my second, maybe third vortex bun. I like how yours looks with the rope braids, maybe I can learn to do those. Your bun looks bigger than mine and I like its look a lot.
I enjoyed trying, maybe I will try to see if I can do the next hairstyle of the month, whatever it is. It's a little intimidating to try since I always feel like my hair is so short on this board (plus being a very different hairtype than most). Oh, well.

:cheese: Yeah! I was finally able to do one. Type iii hair at APL is... well, you know. It's so funny, my chunky ropes are so big that straight on from the back, it actually looks kind of like a flower. I can handle that. Still looks a million times better than when I try a single-braid bun. :eyebrows:
