My hair is currently MBL and recalling from past experience, I remember I wasn't able to form a figure 8 bun until I got down to at least waist. Anyone else able to make one with shorter length? Just out of curiosity :)

And if so, how? Maybe there is a trick to it with shorter hair.

I learned from Torrin Paige on youtube. My hair is maybe an inch past waist. I never tried to do it before waist.

I could barely do one about 3" past hip, and I do mean barely. I think I needed at least TBL to do one decently.

I was at least hip before I tried this. I've no idea if it would have worked on shorter hair, sorry!

I just did a figure 8 bun. :) I'm only at waist and 28" so by all means I should not be able to do it. But mine does not look much like a figure 8 bun.... I made it very compact with a short hair stick. So it's a smooshed figure 8. lol. I can't make it all defined and preety with the loops. Not long enough yet. But tiny smooshed figure 8 is cute. :)

p.s. (not sure if spelling smooshed right, or aoutomatic correction don't do smooshed)

I just tried it with one less loop and could probably do it at 32 inches or so. That is a smidge above waist for me. It may depend on how thick you hair is. The thinnner your hair, the shorter you can do it.

Try doing it with half your hair.

Try doing it with half your hair.

Great minds think alike. I was totally thinking that. I'll give it a go tonight :)

I never tried it before waist so I have no idea what the minimum length is... Looking at some of the responses, I think a lot depends on your thickness/length ratio. Second the half up suggestion.

*digs around* I got a picture somewhere. Oh, here it is. My hair's about 31" in this pic.

First trick is to make sure your hair is not a hair monster and or related to The Naughty Mess because it will absolutely never happen even when your almost classic. And yes Mess I am typing at you.

The Naughty mess says, "Be as mad as you want, that bun WILL NEVER HAPPEN. So there. :p "

Second there are two ways to do it. The twist way and the L way. I believe WaitingSoLong did a really good video of the L way and I would ask her if it is still up because it's the most length friendly figure 8 I have seen.

The Naughty Mess says, "And it doesn't work either because I won't do it."

This is a figure 8 on my not yet BSL hair. A spin pin helped me hold it in place. I do a bee butt bun, then fold up the top most coil. I have been able to do one for a while now, say two inches past APL. I have a three inch ponytail circumference.

Ok, I have been practicing ladies; twisting and turning and churning ;) and I am happy to type that I did it!!!! More hair would make it look more full, but hey, it's a start:

Please ignore the glaringly stark white forehead. I had to up the contrast to get the bun to show.

This was actually the first bun I did regularly, long before I even knew what it was. It was just my go to way to put up my hair. Like Wildcat Diva, I started doing it a little past APL and my hair is around 3" in circumference, maybe a little more. I also make a bee butt bun and flip up the top coil.

Before I cut an inch off last month I was at bottom of BSL and could do it using spin pins. Now I'm at the top of BSL and it looks wonky with hair poking out in odd angles (darn layers)

What a difference an inch makes :-/
