View Full Version : Brunettes! Does your hair flare red in the sunlight?

(I have no idea how to make a poll so this will have to do!)

So, simple question, does your hair flare or glow red in the sunlight? Please let me know if you are virgin/natural, use dye, henna, etc.

For years I have tried to rid myself of this red glow because I feel like it doesn't compliment my skin tone whatsoever, but I'm starting to wonder...

Do all brunettes have this warm, red flash or orange glow when the sun hits?

I would love to flash gold instead but I've never managed to achieve such a thing, nor do I know if it's even possible.

Also, if you are not a brunette but your hair colour still changes (or doesn't) when the sunlight shines on it please chime in with your details too!

Thankity! :flower:

I know of one brunette member, though I haven't seen her around in awhile, whose hair flashed white in the sunlight. So amazing!

Depends on your shade, mine glows golden, but only to about ear length, because i used deposit only colour at the beginning of year and it didn't wash out completely.

It depends on the light - sometimes my hair glows golden, sometimes my hair glows red (but even when the sky is cloudy).

It's kind of ashy I think, maybe just a bit golden. It use to have a bit more golden/orangey glow though.
This is already a henna gloss: http://i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p496/Lilith513/7c89f1c1-d001-489b-bee0-aa9587555b3d.jpg?t=1382546057

Right now my hair glows red due to henna. Without henna my hair gets cool-ish gold tones outdoors, more so if I have had sun exposure on my hair. Indoors it looks very dark (with or without henna). I'll look for some older (pre-henna) pictures...

Yep, mine looks very red toned in the sunlight and where the light hits it, it does flash red but then my grandad was a redhead and I have individual strands that are red/coppery and a few golden ones thrown in too :) However, in some lights my hair looks kind of ashy? And others quite neutral ha. In my avatar/profile picture I'd say it's very neutral looking but it was poor lighting and a poopy camera. This is how much my hair can change... this is a very colour accurate picture (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/RioChanelHilton/media/2.jpg.html?sort=3&o=4)* and gives you an idea of how red it can be when I'm in the sun (that picture was taken indoors obviously) and this is an example of how odd lighting can make it look much lighter and imo ashy (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/RioChanelHilton/media/4.jpg.html?sort=3&o=3) even though it's not even close to ashy I don't think anyway haha. I think it also somehow has an almost golden flash in the ashy one, if that's possible? I'd be interested to hear what other people think!! :)

*I'm feeling pretty shy about posting this picture, I've lost 115lbs since then :o

ETA - The first picture is clearly pretty old (I'm at Hip+ now/lost the weight) and the second picture is a couple of months old at Waist+, so not super recent but I still think they show quite clearly a lot of my hairloss :( (1 inch+ of my ponytail)

Yep! I blame my red headed mother. Since I can't grow up to have red hair (without maintaining a dye) I love my highlights.

I'm light brunette, almost blond, and my hair goes kinda red-gold in direct sunlight. It's cause I'm half ginger on my mother's side though :)

I've always had natural blonde highlights in my hair, especially in the crown section where I've had both a straight fringe and side-bangs before. So I'd say mine shines golden because it always did as a kid but I have been doing ACV's decently often (hard water) so it might start to gain more of a red tinge which I heard that's a common side-effect; I certainly wouldn't mind :) You can see a lot of the blonde below, sorry for the poor quality!

Yeah, with the henna in it, it glows red, BUT before henna it would still have a red tone to it. There are a lot of red heads in the family.

Yes. It is due to red highlights. Mine are natural, and I have chestnut-colored hair. I didn't notice them for the longest time. Inside, it just looks brown. But in the sunlight all the reds and a few blondes show. :) :disco:

My natural shade flares gold because it's an ash brown. I henna it now, so it turns red-copper in the sun. Enjoy the red flash! I don't think it's possible to have natural skin/hair color pairings that are not flattering.

Mine flashes orange. I tend to call it my 'ginger halo'! On the lower parts of my hair where I dyed purple last year and all the blue washed out leaving me with a light reddish colour, it's a lot brighter.

My hair is dark brown with red undertones. Sometimes they look orangey-red. You can kind of see the red indoors, but isn't until I get outside when you can really see the red come out. I love it! I am sure I have red undertones because I am of Irish descent.

I dye it red now, but when my hair started growing in "ashy brown" it would light up golden in the sunlight, and I would get ash blonde highlights. Prior to the ashy phase, it was much more of an auburn color, so it did flash very red.

I wish I had inherited my mother's beautiful auburn hair. There's still a fair amount of reddish tinge when the sun shines on it:

My natural color had hints of red in it. My dad had dark red hair when he was younger, now its darkened to more of a brunette. My mom hadashy brunette. So mine is a good mix, I dye with henna now so I'm not sure what my natural color looks like now that I'm older.

Yup! This is my natural color. No henna or anything. I had been doing ACV rinses, so that may have helped a little, though.

Mine does! I've always liked the red in my hair.

My hair photographs very ash-y and a little darker than it really is. It looks almost black in some pictures. In real life, it's very much a warm dark brown that flashes a red orange in the sun. I quite like my natural hair color, though I wouldn't mind going auburn. I don't know if that would work with my skintone though.

No, Ive never seen any hint of red in my middle brown hair. I do have a lot of golden tints in there though (and now I mean in my natural, virgin hair that reaches to about APL as of today. The last inches of my hair still hold some dye). I cant deny it would be pretty awesome with some red tints in there because I think its so pretty, but then again, my skincolour is kind of pink-ish so it probably wouldnt look very good on me...

Hmm, I henna now, and my hair is really a light brown, but it's naturally never had any red in sunlight even when I did grow it out a bit. It's more of a blonde/honey color in the sun.

My hair looks black in sunlight, no red just opaque really.

Now, in red lights it can look very red and pretty. But outside it looks black.

I put special effects on my naturallt black hair to make it blue-ish in the sunlight, but I haven't applied it in over a year (deposit only).

Mine has some deep red and some coppery tones in the sunlight. I really love it, but then again I used to dye my hair red! Now it's all virgin and I wish those tones came through more indoors. My son's hair is only slightly lighter brown than mine, but he has golden tones in the sunlight. It is so pretty! His dad, however, has brown hair that stays brown no matter what the lighting - no red, no golden, no ash. Just brown.

It's really kind of cool how many different shades of brunette there are!

I do have coppery tones outdoors and under natural light, under artificial it usually looks ashy.

The weird thing about the copper tones is that the shade is completely different from henna-copper.Henna when it's subtle enough goes yellow on me.When it is strong enough it goes orange.

Yes, mine does, and I have always wanted to encourage it. I think it is beautiful. At one point, I dyed it with more red, but it turned more purple-ish than I liked. Now it's my own natural color, and I think it's very pretty. Mine flashes a reddish-goldish color, depending on the lighting.

Yup! Mines on the auburn/chestnut end of the brunette colour spectrum though, although most non "hair people" just call it brown - you can see the colour my sunbleached ends flash in sunlight in my sig pic, the rest gets a red glow as well but not quite that dramatic.

Right now I'm a henna head, but my natural color is auburn. So I had mostly red tones in the sun with a hint of gold depending on the lighting. So it is possible to get a golden glow on our hair color, but I'm not sure if it had to be natural or if a deposit dye might do the trick.

It depends on the light for mine, I think. More often than not, it seems to glow red.

There are some days, however, that my hair leans more to the red palette and its -very- noticeable. Those close to me will make the comment, "Oh wow... it's a red day!"

I tend to find this pretty awesome, since in my younger days I preferred bright pinks and purples to deep blood reds and multi-colored hair.

Yes, i have very dark brown hair but when the sun hits it has a red sheen. I really love it. The only time I ever dyed my hair was when I was 13 and dyed it red, no bleach. It didn't look any different until the light hit. Then it was really red. It took a couple weeks for anyone to notice but my family (as they had helped me dye it, haha) so that was a fun thing. ;)

My hair's always had a red tint to it, so much so my hair was a super dark auburn when I lived in SoCal. Mom said it reminded her of dark wood in the sunlight. Right now the only chemically treated bits of hair are probably the last eight inches or so,everything else is virgin and it looks a really dark brown almost black. Unless I'm sunlight or regular yellow light bulbs. Under hallogen light the'res bits of red but its mostly super dark. With all the shinies of course. I'm still surprise at how glossy my hair looks. And I don't do much to it anymore. I remember trying to get it shiny and I'd use serums and special shampoos but it still looked dull. well, less dull but mroe like a shiny matte, if that makes sense.

My hair is a dark brown but the sun gives me some funky red highlights. The ends of my hair also get really red (instead of blonde) because of sun exposure. I used to love it but now I see any redness as a sign of sun lightening, and thus as a sign of damage :/

Anabell
November 30th, 2013, 05:41 AM
I think I have more cold tint of brown. It still "softer" color that black, but there no red in it. I have couple of strikes that have warmer tone and have a red tint in the sun, though. I have virgin hair down to my shoulders, the rest of it (ironically) dyed red, because I wanted to be a redhead so badly ones.

Oh, well, at least I have the "red" strikes. I also have a blonde one (like, really blond. Not "have a golden tint in the sunlight"). I also ignored the fact that the red color didn't compliment my skin tone and make it look more pink (in a bad way). It needs some cold tones to balance it.

So now I have the brown around my face to balance my skin tone and the golden-orange (it faded out over time to golden orange) in the length :)

Yup, my natural color definitely flares orange (I hate hate hate it) and sun bleaches to a super brassy orange color on the ends, even though it comes out of the top of my head dark ash brown... I tone it down pretty regularly with blue Manic Panic, I dislike the color so much.

It depends on what part of my hair you're looking at. Towards the ends, it's reddish, but it's also been somewhat sun-bleached and is a few shades lighter than the hair close to my scalp. The hair close to my scalp is a dark brown with golden undertones as opposed to red. I'm pretty sure that all of my hair is virgin. I used to dye my hair (last time was almost 8 years ago), but I think that that part is gone. I have kind of a natural ombre look going on, though. :p

My hair naturally flares red in sun. In fact, it was always a very warm, reddish brunette. I liked it enough that I started to henna to bring out even more red.

Apparently it's because the red hair gene is in a different place to brunette and blonde, so you still produce the pigment in darker hair, it's just often not as noticeable as the ginger you get when combined with blonde.

I have a natural hair color that is between gold and brown. I would describe it as hobby paint gold if that makes sense. I dye it black without bleach and yes in direct sunlight at times and sometimes else times to my natural golden hair color shines through and give my black dyed hair a flare of red. I think it is pretty and have no need to start bleaching my hair to get rid of it. I think it makes my dyed hair look more natural.

My hair goes red in the sunlight, but then it also goes bright auburn after a summer of sun exposure, so I'm not sure I qualify as a "full brunette" or if I'd fall more in the auburn category.

My hair usually looks jet black (same with my eyes) but in the sun it glows really red, yeah. I know what you mean about kind of wishing it didn't sometimes; to me mine looks unnaturally red in the sun, as if I dyed it, and sort of clashes with my dark skin tone, yeah. So you're not alone, OP!

My natural hair colour is ash brown. But I henna a lot and it glows red/orange in the sun. My avatar is an old photo when I used indigo and henna together around 3 years ago and it used to glow burgundy/ purply in the sun.

My hair doesn't glow per say, but it is red in sunlight yes. My husbands is a brunette and his hair has a beautiful metallic sort of sheen to it, in a golden tone, I'm guessing this is what you're talking about. He was blonde as a child and my daughter who has light brown hair(which I think will be darker as she ages too) has the same gold sheen. It's really beautiful, but not just because of the colour more because it glistens in a way mine doesn't. I often find myself brushing my daughters hair in the sunlight just to look at how beautiful it is, it's just like liquid gold when the sun hits it.

My hair is natural, I have used henna once but it was red before that.

Like others, my hair varies drastically in different lighting. But I think my hair is a bit redder now than it was in my previous post (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=116446&p=2546866&viewfull=1#post2546866). Here's an indoor and an outdoor photo to compare as well. My hair goes from an ashy color to one that is much warmer. I have no idea how to describe it though.

I have dark brown hair (natural). My hair usually flairs golden to orange in sunlight, though I've sometimes noticed a bit of red. Oddly enough, I've also noticed that it can pick up a bit of a purple tint in some light if I'm wearing a purple shirt or jacket (maybe there's some weird reflection thing going on?).

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/Twice_Magpie/TTstick3b.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/Twice_Magpie/media/TTstick3b.jpg.html)

I'm not all too pleased about my red glow, either. I had to stop using ACV rinces even though they made my hair suuuper shiny and soft because they really enchanced the copper in my hair. I adore red hair on other people, but it clashes horribly with my skin and eyes.

Mine does a deep red color in the sun. I have very dark brown, almost black hair naturally. I'd been henna-ing for a year or so more recently, so it's distinctly more pronounced red in the sun with that. About two months ago, I did a hendigo just because I wanted my natural color back. That seems to have faded and my hair is back to the red in the sun but still looks close to natural outside of sunlight. Even as virgin hair, it glowed red in the sunlight. I appreciated it because it helped me feel like I could get an idea of what henna may come out for me without the investment ;-)

Ever since using the Chestnut Henna shampoo bar by Chagrin Valley for a few months, I definitely noticed the reds flaring more in the sun. Even prior to using it, there were definitely noticeable red undertones in the sun. A duller, browner red than a lot of hair in this thread, but red nonetheless. :D

I don't know if I classify as a brunette, but I have light auburn hair that looks completely red outside. I never used henna, or any lighteners or dyes. My Sister and Mum have black hair, but it shines the same copper orange shade. I think in the light, the dark pigments are 'hidden' so whatever else is under there gets seen. Warm hair shines copper red mostly, Cool hair shines golden silver.

I wonder if any redheads can ever have a silver glow in the sun... Wouldn't that be exotic looking!

I have naturally light golden brown hair (some think it's dark blonde but I consider myself a brunette). In sun light it flares golden and coppery, no red. The hair dye that I last used had a lovely golden flare when it started to fade, no red or orange. It was a demi-permanent color, L'oreal Casting Creme Gloss in shade 513, Iced Truffle. As the number suggests the tones in the dye are ash and gold. I dyed with this over my natural blonette color, if your hair is darker, it may still turn reddish or orange, because the dye has peroxide which I think lightens your natural hair a bit and may bring out the red/orange undertones in your hair.

probably im not considered brunette but my natural black as it grows flashes very ashy in the sunlight, the camera often picks it up much more blueish than it actually is. But i also do have some strands with a warmer tone to them. At this point im into henndigo for to long to exactly tell what natural color my ends would be now, i gus if i left them alone they woild lift to a level 3 and be mostly ashy with some gold. Doesnt match my skintone either, its neutral but looks much better if the cool tones are enhanced.

My hair is very dark brown but since I have been growing it long it is redder towards the tips and has a golden brown red (kind of hazelnut red!) glow in the sun at the roots. When you bleach dark hair it will go orange first so it makes sense that it will glow red/lighten in the sun. I never get distinctive highlights though.

I'm a light auburn, so not totally a brunette, but I often look ginger on sunny days. It's not really a flare though, all my hair looks that color the whole day. Sometimes I look ginger on really cloudy days too, and occasionally have a lot more brown tones on sunny days... But my color varies from an darker ashy reddish brown to so red I get called ginger depending on the day.
And to any redheads that read this, I use ginger in an affectionate rather than derogatory way :)

Yes, absolutely! To answer your question if all brunettes have the red glisten, no they don't. I have had the pleasure of knowing many brunettes who had no red at all in the sun, they're highlights and/or lowlights could be all types of colors from light blonde to black. I believe it is a genetic trait and therefore inherited. Case in point: My daughter has jet black hair with brown lowlights in the sun. My older son had dark brown with no highlights in the sun but with slightly lighter brown lowlights. My youngest son had my same tone with the red in the sun. Such a gorgeous kaleidoscope of possibilities.

What do you mean when you say "lowlights"? I thought "highlights" were anything lighter than the base color and "lowlights" anything darker than the base color, but now I'm wondering if I've been misusing the terms.

My hair flashes red, gold, or orange in the sunlight, and I hate it. I wish it wouldn't, and when i was a teenager I went tooth and nail in a crusade against "the glint" with hiding my hair in a bandanna during the day and not letting a single strand poke out, using tons of leave-in conditioner, avoiding sunlight like a vampire, toner treatments, and, when I was seventeen, dying it black, which just made things worse (red glint in jet black hair? Very hard to pull off unless you're Ruby Rose), and dying it dark ash brown, which did nothing at all. I just let my dyed hair grow out and learned to ignore the glint.

Nope, my hair gets gold tints in sunlight. As a kid I had huge, inch-wide blonde highlights through my hair from sun exposure. I looked like a preschooler who had been allowed to play with Sun-In! Yes. My hair is virgin/natural. It's a chestnut brown color and halfway down there are very visible warm cinnamon highlights scattered throughout. So much so that many people ask where I get my highlights done. Lol. In bright sunlight, you can really see the reddish tint. I've grown to like it.

Mine definitely looks red in bright sun. The current photos aren't the most accurate since I'm growing out some color hijinks (burgundy box dye, long ago faded), but still fairly close to what it does on its own.

It also grabs red if I lighten it, the color won't lift right, it tries to be orange and takes a ton of bleaching to get to blonde. Even then it's kind of a strawberry blonde at the nape. Needless to say, I gave up on that a long time ago.

And this is honestly the best sunlight picture I have.. The others don't show the shining color as well as this one, but that's no surprise with the wind making it go everywhere haha. My hair was surprisingly not all that tangly after this 'photo shoot' lol

Oh yeah. I have natural very dark brown hair that some people consider black, but I know it's not because I have family with true black hair, and mine is most definitely brown, when you look at the individual hairs it's very obvious i even have light brown 'highlights'. My orangey-red tones are obvious even in dull lighting to myself, and the individual hair strands toward the end turn goldish. I actually remember the first time I realized my hair had red tones because I was standing in the sun and my friend looked at me and said woah you have red hair.

I have black hair, at least at roots they are black, not jet black but definitely black. But my black hair tends to be brown even yellow towards the ends and my hair flares red in the sunlight, which is so weird...

No, not any more. Not even the bits that aren't white and have never been dyed blue. It's a very cold brown.

When I was a kid the ends used to sun bleach reddish, I doubt that could happen now.

Definitely. I have dark brown hair that flashes orange. I'm also half red so I'm not quite sure what color the brown turns to when sun bleached.

My brown turns into a deep red color at sunset. I think in normal lighting...It could be chestnut?

Wow there is so much variation between Brunettes! I wonder if the colour you flash in the sunlight depends on underlying pigments in the hair. I've heard the theory that blonde hair will flash golden (even if it's a very dark blonde) and that true brunette hair will flash red due. Both due to the underlying pigment. Honestly though I am not sure if I buy that because my hair flashes golden but would be a very dark blonde  I definitely consider my hair more on the brunette side of the spectrum - even if it can look considerably lighter in natural light as compared to indoors.

Anyways here is a pic showing what I mean:

My hair used to be a medium brown, likely due to sun overexposure as a child, but has gotten darker as I aged/stayed out of the sun unless wearing a giant floppy hat. I wouldn't call it dark brown, but definitely a few shades darker. In the sun, it has always had a golden undertone to it, definitely warm and "brassy", but I wouldn't call it red. I also personally love natural brunette hair with warm undertones. I feel like it can really compliment one's skintone :)

My natural hair color? Nope. It's cool-toned brown all the way!

Yep, mine definitely flares red in the sunlight many years ago when my natural dark brown hair would shine through the sunlight, and I do use dye now, and it also flares up red in the sunlight as well! And, I always use a blonde shade to get my dark brown hair to turn red.

Something in between reddish and yellowish flare. Also depends on is it morning or evening sun or broad daylight.

I have the darkest shade of brown, almost black. In the sun it looks golden or reddish golden depending on the hour. I think most brown hair looks golden or lighter in the sun, sometimes giving people the idea their hair is a lighter shade than it is
If I separate my hair and hold it against the sun it even looks a lightish medium brown, and it's actually very shy of black! (example)

I have light brown hair and it looks golden in the sunlight, sometimes a bit orange but definitely not red ;) Maybe because it's ashy

I have a dark ashy color and yet it flares yellow/gold in the sunlight. It is the oddest thing ever. Even though I know I have red pigment in my hair (when it goes through bleaching).

I'm a medium brown, but my hair doesn't look red in the sun. The parts that were lightened by the sun are more of a gold color even though my hair at the roots is ashy brown. My tips, after years of sun exposure are blonde in some areas.

Yes! Sometimes it looks really red outside, though I definitely have a few blonde streaks as well. I guess that's a medium warm brown? I took a pic in a sunny room just now and you can kind of see it.

I've started dying my hair a dark brown and the first thing I noticed was that it has an orange/yellow flare in the sun. It was a little hard to get used to, because when I highlighted my hair I never wanted any warm tones at all. But now with it being darker, I actually like it.

Mine flares golden. I'm not sure I've got red tones in my hair. Even when I bleached, it just went yellow blonde, no red stage.

Oh yes mostly red but some gold too, all my life I had people thinking I dyed my hair, which it was always a struggle to demystify...

My hair takes on a more blonde tint in the sun. If I spend enough time in the sun, it even starts to lighten into a dirty blonde color, giving me a natural sombre.

My natural chestnut colour flares a beautiful red in the sun, but also sometimes gold, like a conker/horse chestnut.

Yes, my hair has a coppery red tint to it in the sun, but I like it I looked this up and it said that the copper red tint is actually considered golden brown. Go figure lol

My hair, when I had my natural haircolor, was glowing in a golden like glow in the sun while some parts were shiny red!

Mine flares a yellow/golden in the sun, which has always been odd to me. BUT, when I bleach it, it turns orangy/brassy, so I do have red undertones (no wonder, it's quite dark).

When I still have my super dark brown hair that can be considered black, it always have some orangy - reddish flares when the sunlight spotted my hair. Now, I have bleach my hair and then dyed it back, my whole hair become brown and when Im going out, yellow, red, orange flares appear all the time (most of because my hair color is not even right now, some place darker or lighter than the rest). Eventhough I did like the color of the flare but I dont think that it suit my complexion :<

Yes, very much. I'm growing out black dye, so now just my roots glow red in the sunlight. I call it my halo :3

Yes! It's a bright red in the sun. I had dark auburn hair as a kid and it became just a dark brown when I was a teen. The last couple years I've been getting a lot of bright red strands and my hairs lightened up quite a bit. Guess it wants to be auburn again.

A pretty bright red! I wish it could stay. But it's only like that in bright, direct sunlight. It's always been like this for me.

My virgin hair flare gray and golden. Since I dyed, even if the dye faded completely, it now flares red.

For clarity: my virgin hair is a light brown (between a 6 and a 5) with ashy and golden tones, with some blonder pieces around the ears. The gray is given indeed from the ashy tone, I don't have gray hair.

Sure it does, check this picture: https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=46882&d=1648067059

I was really surprised when I saw this. In this picture I have completely virgin hair. In some artificial lights is looks ashy and you would never guess there's any warmth.

I am a natural brunette, and my brown tone is cool, so no... no red flashes in sunlight.
Now im going grey too so I do grey flashes instead. :)
