Faux Bob?

I can't figure out how to do a faux bob for the life of me.

I have hip length hair, and I tried a few methods and none of them seem to work for me.

I failed miserably on all three methods multiple multiple multiple times!! One time I thought it held but my hair slipped out piece by piece as I was eating lunch! It was mortifying.

What's the deal? Is a fake bob only achievable if you have waist length or shorter hair? Can a hip length girl also do a fake bob? I'm so tired of the long hair look and I want a short bob for a change, but I don't want to cut my hair when I'm not even at TBL yet.

I'm only waist length but for me, I simply wrap my hair around my hand and pin it under.

I feel your pain I am between BSL and WL 20" and I love bobs and am tempted to chop. Keep practicing, use bobby pins, that helps me.

I don't know about straight bobs, but I used to do a curly "bob" sometimes.

Basically, use a heatless method to curl your hair as curly as it will get. Find a method that works for your hair type and Go Crazy. If you don't have a tried and true method to curl your hair, experiment on a section of your hair until you find a method that yields as many repetitions per inch as possible in the largest possible diameter (ideally ~1"). Just make sure that the curls are well defined.

Then, once it's curly, determine how long you want your hair to appear. Gently fold a curl on itself length wise making sure that nice spirals are visible at the new "hemline" and secure the true end of your hair to your scalp using a bobby pin. Make the curl loops different lengths so that in the curly madness it's easily lost that each curl doesn't end, it just disappears. If you part your hair to one side, the side curls make a fake "curly face frame", that looks modern but still sort of vintage inspired. Also, the curls loops on themselves in such a short space add incredible volume and height that can be played with.

After you make the bob, primp and prod with bobby pins until it all looks and lies how you want. Some folded curls make not want to stay folded. Just secure them with another tiny bobby pin.

I loved this method because the fake curls eat up an enormous amount of length, and when you pin the curls back on each other, that eats up more. I used to get BCL length hair to look chin length this way and people always thought I cut my hair.

And yes, I'm a mostly 3b natural curly, and yes, even I had to curl my hair to do this this. Uniformity in the curls is necessary to play this trick, and my natural curls are too unpredictable. A long haired true 3c may not have to curl their hair for this, but a 3c with BCL+ hair actually has hair to their knees so that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish.

I have two methods that I use for curly faux bobs.

I have yet to find a straight hair faux bob that I can accomplish on my hair, I will be experimenting and closely following this thread!
