View Full Version : Why, oh why, do I have split ends all of a sudden?

Specifically those little bulbs at the end of the hair shaft. I pulled on them a little to check that it wasn't hair that had fallen from the root and just turned itself upside down, but no.
This is honestly the first time I've ever, ever had split ends since joining LHC. I have no idea what I'm doing to cause them, and they've only popped up this past fortnight.
My routine is consistent.....
I only trim with very sharp scissors.
I don't heat style.
My ends are always, always safely tucked away inside a stick-bun.
I clarify every now and again but only when I need it.
I use sulphate free shampoo + cone free conditioners.
I can't mechanically damage it because I only very gently finger comb. No braids, etc.
I barely ever oil any more because if any hair touches my face it becomes zit city.
I use biolage as a leave-in if I feel like my hair needs it.
What could I be doing wrong?
Also, just to add, my hair is becoming a freaking dust magnet! This is even after clarifying w/ no post-oiling or conditioning, dust just looooves my hair. :\

I just made a very similar post about my hair =/ I can't find the breakage culprit! Have you considered chelating? That is what I'm doing next.
I also narrowed down the damage to coming mostly from sun/salt water exposure. Hope that helps you too.

You should keep in mind that with split ends as opposed to breakage they can happen at any time. Maybe you were a little rough on a section of hair anywhere-up-to-the-age-of-your-longest-hair-ago and that section of hair has finally reached the end of your length.
Don't stress too much. Just try and S&D and keep in mind that you have to treat your hair gently for however long it takes your roots to grow to your ends to significantly cut down on split ends from previous bad habits. And people still get split ends from unavoidable daily wear and tear as their hair gets longer anyway.

I'm going through the same thing my self. I think mine is from wearing the same style over and over. When I wore the same style I wore it tight. I also didn't use a silk pillow case now. I think it's due to stress on my hair. I only had one spot in the back. I did oil it and do my normal routine.

Hair gets damaged from 'weathering' (shampooing, hygral fatigue, hairs rubbing against one another, against fabrics, combing, sunlight, etc) - you can minimise this but you cannot avoid it completely. Over months or years the cuticle wears away to such an extent that splits and breaks happen.
You say silicone free and little oiling but what ingredients are you using to replace the properties of silicones? Do you need to chelate, use more protein or less protein?

I've never had split ends in my life. It was never a problem for me.
But now that my hair is the longest it's ever been I am starting to get some. So I just think it's because they are 'old' and this just happens sometimes.
Is your hair the longest it's ever been? Or did you have long hair like this before without split ends?

thirstylocks, audhumla, jacqueline 101: Thank you, I guess sometimes it just can't be helped? I was worried that I was doing something terribly wrong that was causing them, makes me feel a little better. :)
firefox7275: That makes me feel a lot better, in a way. Properties of silicones - you mean for protection? I suppose.... nothing. Oils are just too risky for my terrible breakout-prone skin, I'm not sure what else I can use instead, I have tried vinegar rinses before if that counts? I'm still pretty useless about haircare if I'm being really honest, most of the popular things haven't worked for me despite countless tries and adjustments. I have never toyed around with chelating or protein before, I'm kind of scared to, a bit! I have never had crunchy or mushy hair.
kiwiwi: This is definitely the longest my hair has ever been! I guess I have been lucky not to have to S&D up until this length. :)

I agree with kiwiwi. I think since your hair is the longest it’s ever been then it’s just normal weathering. So maybe you need to consider some extra steps to reduce wear and tear on your hair. Maybe putting coconut oil on ends before wash wouldn’t upset your skin too much. That would minimize hygral fatigue damage.

I do have to agree with kiwiwi this is the longest my hair has been in years. It could be wear and tear from every day things because our hair has grown beyond it's normal point. Now our hair is fragile and needs more tlc.

Thank you both! I will try a little pre-wash coconut oiling & see how it goes. :flower:
