View Full Version : Best Friend Hair Envy?

I have been trying to grow my thin, blondish hair out for over a year and I'm doing just fine. My only complaint is that whenever I am seen with my best friend when her hair is down, I look like I have the ugliest hair on earth! Her hair is so full of body and life and mine is extremely limp and flat. She gets comments and compliments about her hair EVERYWHERE that we go and I feel like I am invisible. I was wondering if anyone feels similarly. I'll attach photos because you are all probably curious. (Sorry for my funny faces)
The two of us:

Her hair is pretty.
It wouldn't look very nice on you.
Your hair suits you and is also beautiful hair. It is definitely not thin!
Hers probably will always get more comments because there are less people with long hair of that type than there are of your type. People don't mean to slight you, I am sure, nor do they mean that you do not also look lovely. they just comment on what they see less.
Please do not let this affect your friendship--friends are precious!
I'm glad that you wrote this post to get it out of your system and I hope it helps.
The grass is greener... there are many people out there who I am sure are envying YOU.

Your hair is an awesome gorgeous color.
Yes, her hair is really gorgeous, but yours is too! Think of how much easier it is to curl (compared to straightening her curly hair) and manage. Think how gorgeous your hair looks with braids, you can see intricate work. My dark hair just looks like a blob and you can't see any of my cool braiding techniques.
My advice is do cool hairdos, like learn to braid and use the strengths of your hair: color, texture, manageability. Do waterfall braids! They'll look so awesome and you can embellish them. Next time you guys are out, both will get compliments!
I know how you feel, my BFF has hair jealousy on my hair and I'm always so jealous of hers, which is the same as you BFF curly and full of body.

It's true her hair is beautiful but so is yours, your hair is just different, different colour and different texture... That doesn't mean your hair isn't beautiful in its own right! Are you truly unhappy with your own hair? If you are then maybe see how you can play with it, take care of it and I'm sure you'll be happier with your hair in no time. Is it her colour or curls you like? If you prefer her hair over yours that much then I see no reason why you couldn't colour your hair darker (veggie dyes or henndigo if you wanted something very permanent) and you can obviously style your hair into lovely curls with rags/rollers/flexi rods etc (or a curling wand, if you do use heat?). My point is if you prefer dark curly hair then there's nothing to stop you having that. I love my hair colour but as a straightie I'm very envious of the curlies and often curl/braid my hair :) There is nothing wrong with having hair that makes you feel good but remember, your hair is already lovely and you don't need to change it, honestly, don't down on yourself and don't think anyone else would either :blossom:

I like your hair a lot more actually, if I had to pick one for myself I'd pick yours! :)

Also, this ^ is spot on I think!

Both of you are gorgeous and both of you have gorgeous hair. Women always seem to want what we don't have. Its best to start to love what you are naturally and work with it rather than against it (emotionally or physically).
BTW, I hate to be super-annoying, but does she know you posted photos of her on here? Might be good to check with her...

Crumpet- She knows. She's fine with it haha and asking isn't annoying.
Everyone else- Thanks for the support and kind words! I'm just an insecure teen I guess.

We've all been there, I used to bleach and perm my hair ;) I've embraced my colour and now use heat free styling methods* whenever I fancy a change from being a 1a/1b... Where there's a will, there's a way :)
*(I very rarely heat style nowadays)

No you aren't a insecure teen, as a wavy I have both curly and straight envy . Try doing a waterfall braid with cute pins, they look amazing on your texture and color. My daughter has similar hair and she gets comments all the time, twist braids look amazing and so detailed. I once did the same hairstyle on both and you wouldn't believe how many comments she got.
I Ecco work with what you've got. You friends hair is gorgeous and very long in general because of the curl, you both are very different. Embrace it, and compliment each other you guys look great together!

Think of it this way; she'll never have wavy naturally blonde hair and blue eyes. Feel better? You're both pretty.

You both have beautiful hair. A lot of us want what we can't have. If we have curly hair, we want straight. If we have brown hair, we want blonde. Perhaps your friend is happy with her hair. If so, good for her. I think it is important to try to embrace what our hair is instead of struggling to make it what it will never be. I'm sure lot of people envy you your hair.

I have hair just like hers and trust me it is a HASSLE. I've spent most of my time wishing I had easy to manage hair like yours! Your hair actually looks thicker than hers. Curls tend to give the illusion of thick hair. Like everyone has said, the grass is always greener.

You need to just learn to accept your hair as it is because the only way you'd get her hair type is through a whole lot of damage! You both have beautiful hair and it's just one of those "grass is greener on the other side" situations.

I love her hair, and your hair all the same. You don't know what I'd do to have your color. And your texture is nice as well.
I could stare at curly hair all the time, but it's really hard to maintain it. And it seems to grow more slowly. And it's usually weaker and more prone to breakage.
You can always curl your hair heatlessly, and curly girls are pretty much sentenced to their curl pattern or heat tools.
I was like that not long ago, I have a (natural) red-haired girl in my class and her hair is gorgeous! But I've learned to accept that my hair is never going to look like flames and I just admire it :)

Ahaha, I can relate. I have a friend with an incredible, beautiful mane of very healthy and very glossy 1a iii dark blonde hair... she is growing them out with no particular care, and exept for the ends that were previously bleached it looks and feels like silk :crush:.
Plus it grows like weed! She went from a bob to hip lenght hair in 3 years. No trims.
My hair is much thinner, extremely prone to tangles, and if I ever dared to brush it the way she does it will became a nest of broken hairs and splits in three days ;). I need to "dust" the ends very often to keep the splits at bay, and my growth rate is just average, or even average-to-slow.
BUT... your hair is very beautiful! They look glossy and eerie, and the colour is just great, it looks like a natural medium blonde to me.
To tell the truth, I think both of you enhance the other by contrast, its like your personal traits look even more polished standing aside someone that is (texture and colour wise) the opposite. It looks very cute to me.

You both have lovely hair that fits each one of you as perfectly as nature intended. You must learn to, and most important of all, accept your hair for what it is and cherish it. Your color brings out your eyes, compliments your skin tone and be happy that you have come so far in your growing process:).
One of my friends is almost white-blonde(think Legolas), bleached though, and out side of Sweden she gets many looks. Before I wished I had her color and stick straight texture, but now I have fallen in love with my auburn waves and wurls that makes my green eyes pop. It's all about love really:).

Your hair is lovely and do is your friends. You are both pretty ladies in your own way. She has pretty curly dark and long hair. You've pretty long straight lighter colored hair. You have to embrace your own looks love yourself everything else will fall into place.

Oooh, I hear you. My sister-in-law had gorgeous long red wavy curls. Ooooh, envy envy. It was spectacular. My dad said she looked like an angel. I looked like a teen-age mess.
I have hair-colored-hair that is thin and straight, and spent my youth with perms (which smelled ghastly) and curlers. Never did look right either. Sigh.
Bet your hair is easier to work with and you can do fancier braids and such. Look for those things. Study them and become adept.
Consider cats. Some have long fluffy fur, others are sleek. Some are solid black, others have gorgeous patterns. They're all lovely. :)

Wow she does have a gorgeous head of hair! Just because yours is different doesn't mean yours is ugly, your hair is lovely, it doesn't look flat or limp at all IMO. You both just have different textures. Also, I know this sounds super creepy but you have nice lips (I'm not a perv honest!)

You are comparing apples with oranges, the two heads look and likely feel totally different. Your hair looks fine textured but not thin and looks very healthy, I like most heads of long hair unless it is fried. Hers is more striking to some people because it's less common to see very long curly hair compared to very long straight hair.
You can style your hair for more body if that is what you want: don't overuse silicones, don't brush it smooth but more finer combing, use more hydrolysed protein, wash and style upside down, clip the roots whilst it is air drying, part your hair one side then flip to the other side when dry, overnight do your protective style (bun/ braid/ pineapple) right on the top of your head.

You both have hair that I would love to have. I'm a wavy, so some days I lament that my hair isn't straight, and other days I pout because it isn't curly. I'm sad because my hair won't grow long, and I'm annoyed because my hair doesn't look cute when it's short... so I'm always in this boring in-between space. I hope you can learn to be happy with your pretty long hair. :flower: Lots of us would love to have it!

Ditto. Please know your hair IS beautiful though. She also probably secretly wishes her hair was more like yours. For the most part, we all want what we don't have. Hang in there, you'll learn to appreciate your own hair with time.

You're two *equally* pretty girls. I agree with what chen bao jun said when she referred to your friend's hair type being more "rare" than yours is, and so it might attract attention more easily. That doesn't mean that your hair is less pretty! Far from it. You both have gorgeous heads of hair. Cherish it, and cherish your friendship. It's true that *true* friendships are rare as well. Don't let this get in the way of anything!

And you guys do complement each other! You are a striking pair of pretty friends, the contrast between you is very nice to see.
She must be sweet to allow you to put her picture up.
I am 56 now and have 1 friend left from high school, she is more and more precious as the years pass.
Interestingly, she had the longest hair in my high school!
She is Chinese descent and has tailbone length very smooth glossy black hair, which is still beautiful at age 56. She was my bridesmaid at my wedding and though she lives far, far away, we keep in contact and I jsut love her.

You have the hair color I dream off, to show off braids. Like Les said, you can totally show it off. My cousin is the same way. In fact, I *learned* to dutch braid because of her. She has so many shades of blonde in her hair, it looks gorgeous to see the light blend with the dark and some braids show it off more than others.
I think that's also part of the reason I dip dyed.. so I can have color variance in my dark hair too.
So yes, while her hair is absolutely stunning and envious (hey I'm envious of it too), your hair has some pretty amazing qualities too. Its long. Its pretty. I am sure hats are a non issue with you. (I have a friend with her hair type that envies me for being able to rock out crazy beanies and hats without looking, like she says, alien headed.)

In my country, many girls will be jealous of both of you. Can you guess why? Because you have an exotic beauty. Maybe where you live is really hard to see an african girl with a beatiful long hair. Where I live too. And also, is really difficult to see a girl with long and natural blond hair, like you have. Both of you are beautiful, and you don't need to compare yourself to anyone. When you are a teenager your self esteem depends more of the people around you. But you need to keep in mind that you are different and it doesn't make sense to wait other people appreciate you if you don't do it by yourself in the first place. Keep taking care of yourself and don't think in what other people say. And remember, friendship is really more important than hair :)

Lol your faces in the first picture are exactly how I imagined your expressions when some tells her she has pretty hair!
I think her hair gets more comments because it's very usual to see long, curly hair. Long, straight hair is more common place. Whether one is more attractive than the other is in the eye of the beholder, though. Your hair is seriously gorgeous. If you were my friend I would be jealous every time I saw you!
