View Full Version : Anyone doing their roots soon? Inversion method challenge ...

Hi y'all - after seeing a bunch of Youtube clips on the "Inversion Method", I am so curious as to whether there is any truth to the rapid growth claims resulting from this , so I thought I would call on some willing LHC'ers to test it out. The method involves oiling the scalp with warm oil (apparently any oil will do) and then hanging upside down for 4 minutes (this can be done lying on a bed, as long as your head is inverted towards the floor) and this is done everyday for a week. The blood flow to the head is meant to cause the growth. I am so curious as to whether this does in fact work. Ridiculous amounts of growth are being reported, which are pretty unbelievable. 2-3 inches per week for some! (yeah right!)

Anyway - I won't totally poo-poo this notion, and I thought it would be good to call on anyone who has their roots done to test this method out. Of course those who don't do roots are welcome to give it a go as well, but as hair can wave and fall differently according to washing and combing methods, I think measuring root growth is a sure-fire way to measure accurately.

I have been trying out this method for 3 days - minus the oiling as my scalp is not fond of oiling and I refuse to wash my hair every day. I also started taking diatomaceous earth at the same time so if there is much growth, I won't know where to give credit. Also, my hair length changes daily due to braid waves etc so I find measuring a real pain. And if you have any health issues this method is not advisable.

If anyone has done it already please give feedback - I look forward to hearing your experiences!! :D

Interesting  Don't know if I could handle the oiling part either unless I could find a way to stay in the house for a whole week, lol :p
Would love to hear real results from LHC'ers.

I would be willing to try the oiling. I have been doing scalp massages with my head hanging off the side of the bed for 1.5 years and it increased my growth from just under 1/4 inch per month to just under 1/2 inch per month. No way would I shampoo every day. Would it still work if I just put new oil on top of old (yuck) and just shampooed once weekly? Or would I occlude my follicles so much that I would defeat the purpose?

I think it all comes down to scalp stimulation that that you'd get the same results by just rubbing your scalp for the same amount of time.

In all of the Youtube clips I've seen people are washing their hair daily - however I don't see the harm in putting more oil over the old - as long as you're willing to be indoors for a few days! I'm only going to do the oiling on my wash day. I can't help but giggle at myself - hanging upside down in the name of hair growth! :o

I would love to try this,I already knew it but I cannot wash my hair every day,I have to blow dry and it takes a full hour to dry and i don't have and that's too much every day.
buuuuuuuut, people if you can do this just do it!XD I wanna see if it works!

I did this over summer.. boredom mainly ;). My hair grew a lot.. but I also started taking MSM, Was really relaxed and got a lot of vitamin D from sunbathing. So it wasn't a very reliable experiment.

*tentatively raises hand*

I henna, and I have a pretty good idea of how fast my hair already grows per month. I've been drinking enough water for years, and I've been taking my supplements and eating extra protein (and good fats) for the past several months and my growth rate has stayed the same, so this would be a good way to see how well it works if all variables are 'good'.

I think I'll henna on Sunday the 20th, so I'll measure roots before just to see what this months growth was like, and then I'll start nightly inverted scalp massages (with NO oil, I barely find time to wash twice a week!). I keep track of the exact days I henna in my planner, so it'll be very accurate to measure the roots... I might even take pictures! :)

TL;DR: I'll do it starting next Sunday!

I think it could work, massage and exercise both can probably due to the circulation boost. Presumably you do need a varied wholefood diet with all the nutrients the body needs for healthy skin and hair.

I'm thinking on trying this out. I oiled my scalp and hair today, since tomorrow is wash day. So I did it. Idk about oiling my scalp everyday though, I would be a grease ball lol :p

Alrighty, so even though busy-ness has taken over my life, I'm going to be doing this starting tonight! I might not be checking in very often, but I'll be trying to do a 3-5 minute oil-less scalp massage every night before bed. Maybe it'll help with the crazy amounts of stress pouring over me! :)

I henna-ed last night and had exactly 1/2" of roots after exactly one month, which is what I usually have.
I take multivitamins, eat plenty of protein and good fats, and get about 30 mins of light exercise a day. I've been living this way for many months now with no change in my standard "1/2 an inch or slightly more a month" growth (so any increased growth would not be due to a lifestyle change, but could really only be attributed to scalp massage).

Wish me growth! :D

I think I can try this. I'm growing out my henna and currently I have about 3 cm of roots. I did 5 mins of inversion and oil-less massage today, will continue for a week and then wait for 2 weeks. Will keep you updated :)

Welp, after three weeks I have to bow out of this experiment. I've been having dandruff (for the first time ever, EVER) and the night-time massages are making it look so obvious! I wake up in the morning to flakes distributed through the first two inches of roots, and it's making me feel very self conscious! :( I'm at my wit's end with this dandruff, and I'm going to start applying an antifungal cream (not monistat, just some athlete's foot stuff I already have) to my scalp in hopes of curing it.

I measured my roots this morning, and I have almost exactly the amount of growth I would already have after three weeks.
Scalp massage feels awesome, though, and I'll be doing this again as soon as my snowstorm is over. :)

I would be willing to try this. I wash hair every day I go to work anyway, and don't mind leaving oil in hair on days i don't.
I just had roots done a about a week ago so can track the fresh growth easily, AND I actually have an inversion rack!
I also just cut to SL so I can also track that length. How can I post pictures? DO you need a photbucket acct or is there another way?
I don't mind posting pictures if I can figure out how.

I will start tonight and keep everyone updated. I usually grow the standard .5 inch a month I assume, maybe slightly less some months.

I did my first one today.
I'll try too do it everyday but I will probably need to skip one day in between or so due to lack of time and super early mornings.
Anyway, I mixed EVOO and Castor oil and warmed it up, applied it, wrapped head in plastic + warm beenie, sat on the couch and hung my head between my knees for four minutes. Then slowly moved up again and now I'll wear the oil beenie thing on for 3 or 4 hours, and CO out.

My head is comfortably (numb) warm and as strange as it sounds I feel kind of... revived.

Day 1 done! Will take a picture tonight for my before photo.
I applied castor and olive oil to roots. Coconut to length. Hung upside down for 5 minutes while massaging. Would have hung longer but it was a busy work night.
Oil has been in hair 6 hours so far, will wash in 6 more (need to sleep first - graveyard shift and all....)

I kinda over oiled last night by mistake so should be fun trying to get this out!
I ordered some emu oil to add to the castor as I heard it helps. Delivery by 11.21 That will be added to the mix asap if that is ok.
Haven't read how it is taken from the Emus yet so hope that doesn't make me sad.

So I tried this, one week.
I started last Saturday, oiled, inversed 4 minutes, wrapped it in plastic and a beanie for a couple of hours, I did this Sunday to Wednesday I think.
Then I didn't have the time to wash every day (CO). But I continued the inversion without oil for some days.

Can't say there was any difference in growth. Anyone else tried?

Auksaplauke

Has anyone tried this: Hair Inversion? For those who don't know what it is, it's basically leaning forward or going upside down (or any other position) that increases blood flow to the head. Apparently it encourages hair growth.
I saw this youtube , they say hair grow 1 inch in 7 days. I begin to challenge inversion method.

invertion method

1.Massage an oil of your choice (that has been warmed in hot water) onto your scalp. Olive oil is recommended, but you can experiment with any oil you have on hand.
2.Do a simple inversion for 4 minutes.
3.Let oil sit on scalp for at least two hours. Co-wash to remove excess oil (only if necessary).
Repeat for ONLY 7 consecutive days
4.Wait at least 3-4 weeks between each attempt. Otherwise, your body gets used to the extra blood flow, and the method won’t work as well, if at all. Or, at worst, you become susceptible to some dangerous health risks. So, only attempt to do this over seven consecutive days once per month. No more!
5.Enjoy your new growth!

1 inch in a week? Sounds too good to be true.
Still, has anyone seen if it works?

Kaelee
December 5th, 2013, 06:57 AM
I've heard of people getting one inch per week as a random growth spurt, and then going back to their normal growth rate after. Sometimes that gets mistaken for fantastic results from something or other.

I think a lot of LHCers do this- it's part of scalp massage technique, which a lot of people here do. No unbelievable growth rates though.

While hair inversion is a good idea (helps with circulation among the follicles) it is not a guarantee of faster growth. I invert daily when brushing with my pure bbb. Also, simply inverting w/o doing something to your hair is pointless. Brush or comb it, or massage it while inverting to reap the rewards of same.

Or, just have inversion as part of your stretch and exercise routine.

I've occasionally tried washing inverted. As long as I condition upright, it's all good.
Otherwise, it's a hair revolution, and I'm the target of the coup.

It sounds like pseudoscience to me. Increased blood flow to the scalp would in the long-term increase hair growth, but just for 5 minutes a day? I doubt it. For one thing, when you invert yourself, your body will automatically compensate for the increased blood pressure in your head and torso via a mechanism called vasoconstriction (the blood vessels clench). So overall, circulation to your head won't be that much better, and in fact might be worse (the increase blood pressure could prevent adequate microcirculation). Secondly, ignoring that, one study did find increased hair growth in mice genetically modified to express an angiongenesis gene more than normal mice (hence increased microcirculation) demonstrated faster hair growth, but keep in mind these mice had their genes modified so that they constantly had higher circulation. And even then, growth did not increase by 700% like this method claims (normal growth rate is 0.5 inches per month, whereas this claims a growth rate of 4 inches a month).

I sort of tried this a month or so ago. And by sort of I mean I did it for a week but some days I forgot to use oil, I didn't really time myself and Sometimes I inverted in the morning and sometimes the evening. I think I got half an inch in a week which is still pretty good but it could have been from a random hair growth spurt. I did massage my scalp while I was inverted, but I do that almost daily anyway. I might try it again and be more accurate with timing myself and such, but i won't use oil everyday because that means I'll have to wash my hair everyday which isn't very convenient for me, and doent seem worth it :)

I have been trying to massage my scalp lately, upside down when possible, and I went from 3/4 of an inch per month to 1 inch per month. Not a huge difference.

Actually I made a thread about yoga and hair growth a loooong time ago (can't seem to find it) and yes, inverting did help my hair growth (along with higher protein consumption). I got a LOT of growth, close to 2 inches in a month, but that was it then It went to an inch a month (before that was about 1/2 an inch, I was eating badly and my hair wasn't growing).

I think truepeacenik is right, making it a part of your daily workout or scalp massage can give you great results. But I don't think an inch a week is true.

I have the type of hair (wavy) that looks longer or shorter depending on weather and moisture content, it's hard to measure growth weekly or monthly even, I try to take pictures every 3 to 6 months.

I guess I invert? I flip my hair upside down to wash it and also to help rinse out my conditioner. Also, when I do my sleep braid I lie on my bed and let my head hang back off the edge (makes it easier to start the braid higher up so I can flip it up over my pillow easily :) ) I haven't noticed any difference in growth because of this though, maybe it's not for long enough?

I read about the inversion method probably five years ago in a magazine as a way to give yourself a little energy boost throughout the day. They recommended doing it morning, afternoon, and night for 30 seconds if I recall correctly. Since then I have done it whenever I want to "feel" the blood circulate to my head. It definitely does feel refreshing to me. I can't say if it really makes hair grow any quicker - but extra circulation to the scalp always helps!

January 30th, 2014, 02:44 AM
I read that if you do in too often your body gets used to the extra blood flow and it won't work, that's why people only do it for a week at a time, and probably why none of those who does it everyday, always, see any difference..
But I really don't know. Going to try it though.
Just want my hair to grow.
Probably will start tonight, and do a little overnight treatment as well. Have to do it this week anyway :)
Will take pictures, if anyone's interested!
(and I probably won't be washing my hair everyday.. It's not bad to put on new oil on the old one, right...?)

I know it's bad for your hair to wash everyday, but if you wash with CO, that's not as bad, right? Still bad, but not as with shampoo?
I tried to figure out when to wash during these 7 days, and if I could possibly leave one day in between, but it seems as I will have to wash everyday, except during the weekend..

Im interested to see how this works out. I think Ill start trying it next month. I am trying to get a "control" month since I have never measured my growth before joing LHC. I was also hoping to aquire some kind of scalp massager that would help me with the scalp massage - for some reason I really dont like massaging with my fingertips. Any suggestions for gentle but effective scalp massage tools?

Like alot of yall Im not sure if i can oil EVERY day. Im gonna try though!

I didin't oil yesterday... There was no time :/ I left for work at 7a.m. and got home 2.30a.m..
But I did the upside down-part. Hopefullt it won't ruin anything. perhaps I will just have to do one extra day. Anyway, doing my third (or second...?) day today.
Hair is sooooo soft, but I don't like showering everyday... Even my skin says no... Hm.

I heard about it a while ago and I filed it under "too good to be true", and I wonder how much of it has to do with the massage. I started massage a while ago, and I noticed a difference (of about 1/4" of my regular monthly growth) but I don't often use oil on my scalp if I'm not planning on washing it soon. I honestly feel like some of the people reporting 1-2 inches a week might just be bad at measuring. :|

SkyChild
February 1st, 2014, 12:35 PM
I agree that it's probably more to do with the massage and hanging upside down than the oil.
The bloodflow bit I understand but oil...? Don't know. As a control I'd be willing to do scalp massage and hanging upside down without the oil!

I've seen people on here that say they haven't seen much growth after a week of hanging upside down. Since this seems dependent on blood flow to the head, but only for a short time, I wonder if people who exercise regularly don't see the benefit because they have increased blood flow on a more regular basis, and therefore, are "immune" to the effects.

Just wondering.

Snorman
February 5th, 2014, 10:00 PM
Yeah, I'm wondering that too.. I read that somewhere, but don't know how accurate it is...

Reporting in - My roots are gray and I had them done about a month ago, so I thought I'd make a good experimenter. I modified this, though, because I didn't want to use olive oil on my hair every night. But I did do the inversion and massage and used olive oil three times. And the results were -

Nothing, zip, zero, nada. The experiment was a complete failure. But it felt nice!

I'll do an official measurement tomorrow, but I don't think it did anything for my growth. Maybe it's because I'm pretty active? So my blood flow to my scalp is already good? Anyway, I don't think it did anything for my growth rate, but I'll check tomorrow and report in.

I did this for around three days in the middle of February, then kind of lost motivation and stopped. While I didn't see any additional growth that week, I finished out the month with an extra quarter inch. I was extremely surprised, as this was the only change I had made. Maybe it takes a while to see the effects? I'll be trying for the full week this month to see if there's anything to that. My lifestyle is sedentary and I did not use any oil. I only massaged for five minutes before hanging upside down.

Well I've done my seven days and my growth has been 1 mm. This is exactly what it normally grows on week two after hair dye. Over the next two weeks I'll grow 8 mm to get to my 4 weekly 1cm.

Nothing but nothing is going to budge my stubborn growth rate :(

July 28th, 2014, 03:52 AM
I've started it today too :)
I don't believe that exactly it will work, but maybe my oils mix will work. I always wash my hair in that position over bath.
I have mixed olive oil, castrol oil, sesame oil and few drops rosemary oil.
I take small amount of it and massage my scalp in inversion position.
I will not measure it, but I think better blood circulation because of massage and oils will help.

I'm not sure how often I should now wash my hair. I normally wash my hair twice or once a week. I have curly hair. My hair don't looks oily now, but when it will look like this or get ithy or sth I will wash.

I will be starting today. I also henna ed my hair this afternoon. So I will be able to measure the results really well. I am going to skip the oil today but will start that tomorrow with caster oil, coconut oil, tea tree eo, and peppermint eo

I love this inversion method. Personally, I did notice a significant increase in hair growth, which was really surprising. It was really easy for me to tell because I used to bleach my hair, and the regrowth is easy to measure. I would dye my roots every 5-6 weeks. When I first started the inversion method, I did it for 7 days, as recommended, to test how it worked. I ended up having to dye my roots after only 4 weeks because of the faster growth.

Despite my success, I don't do this every day anymore. I do it maybe 2-3 times a week/ in between washes. I typically wash my hair about once a week though. Also, I do not use oil anymore while doing this. Since joining here, I've realized that putting oil on my scalp has increased my shedding. So instead, I rely on my own scalp oils, and thus do the inversion method a few days after I last washed my hair. So for me, my take on the inversion method sort of borrows techniques from the NW/SO methods. The scalp massage is a good opportunity to sort of redistribute sebum and clear up my scalp. I feel it rejuvenates my hair, and gives it volume, as well as potentially increase hair growth. I don't do daily though, so I doubt I'm seeing any increased growth anymore. But, I still find it beneficial for my hair.

I figure it can't hurt (although I'm a dancer so I spend plenty of time inverted while stretching and such so I may not see much effect), and even if it doesn't increase growth, a scalp massage always feel wonderful.

I did my roots overnight 3/16-17 and started the inversion method on 3/25. I'm not doing oil everyday or I will be a total greaseball. I had just the slightest hint of lighter orange at my roots when I started, so I should be able to tell if I have much extra growth.

I just finished this experiment yesterday and am happy to say I actually saw significant growth! I used a henna oil infusion, bent over and massaged my hair nightly, rinsed out oil in the morning. Ended up with a measurement of 1 inch more than my 3rd day! (I forgot to measure when I started. :P).

I watched and poo poo'ed the YouTubes about this for years and only decided to try because I started an oiling regimen about a week ago anyway so why not add massage and inversion. From what I understand, this is something to do only occasionally (maybe once a quarter?) or else your head gets used to all the extra circulation and grows at normal rate seeming to not work. I may do this seasonally to track consistency.

I'm going to have to try this in a modified way because of cochlear implant surgery in '01 giving me vertigo if I lay my head flat or upside down. I sure do want more length, though.

For whatever my words worth, and I'm sorry I don't have any pictures as it was a few years ago, but I did try this for a week when I'd freshly died my hair blonde and I managed to get half an inch. An inch seems far too much to be able to achieve in such a short amount of time.

I don't know, I'm skeptical of this method. I've seen it around on YouTube, too, so I thought I'd give it a go. For a few months now I have been massaging my head with a scalp treatment every week, while being upside down. Coupled with daily yoga (that's a lot of downdog!), I think there's a lot of bloodflow going to my scalp. I can't say I have noticed much of a difference, to be honest. I still get my average 1cm growth/month.

As for my results, I'm doing the Inversion Method with oil and supplements since Saturday. I have measured on Sunday and since Sunday (it's Thursday now) I got 4-5 millimeters of growth. Wow. And my measuring is very exact since I measure the middle strand of my bangs (widows peak strand). I'm pretty happy with this result for now and hope it continues like this. :) I won't cut my bangs and let it grow out to see the growth better. Measuring the back length is always too inaccurate.
