Now don't get me wrong, I like big buns (...and I cannot lie  ). But I'm curious as to whether there are certain bun styles that can really pack the hair in and make it look smaller. I know that twisting before bunning helps to compact things. Are there any other techniques or styles that make for a smaller bun?

Pictures of your most compact/smallest bun would be welcome! :D

The nautilus and the cinnabun are probably the most compact styles I know. The hypno bun too, which is a variation on the nautilus.

Pencil buns were always very compact for me, even with thick, past hip hair. Part of that was probably practice, because I wore on almost every day, but I always had a nice, solid bun (which is what I wanted).

A braided cinnabun is the most compact style I know.

I think it depends on what you consider compact. Personally, I oftentimes enjoy buns that are very flat against the head. The hair still has to go somewhere, though, so these tend to take up a lot of horizontal space. If you're looking for buns that are just small looking, that would be different as well.

Going through my album to see if I have any pics to illustrate..
Okay. Here's a 2/3 stranded braided vortex bun next to a braided cinnabun next to a cinnabun. I love the vortex bun because it feels compact and flat against my head, but it does take up a lot of the back of my head visually. The braided cinnabun takes up a little less space, and is a little less flat. The cinnabun takes even less space, but is again less flat.

Also my hair was damp in this lazily done Nautilus, which helps it look pretty small.
